The EBow has been around for a long time but I feel there's not a mssive amount of videos talking about EBow with a Lap Steel guitar.
The EBow behaves very differently when using a slide and there's cirtain things you need to be aware of when using an EBow with a Slide or Lap Steel.
There's also some techniques that only work when using your EBow with a Lap Steel guitar, because of the flat position you're able to leave the EBow on the strings without holding it. This can lead to many possibilities and can free up your hands to do other things.
In this video I talk about the things that have worked for me when using a Lap Steel guitar and an EBow. I hope you get some value out of this and hopefully inspire you to try some of these techniques with your EBow and Lap Steel.

Cool. Have you tried it on pedal steel? I'd love to hear that. I was turned on to the trippy possibilities of pedal steel by Steve Howe's playing in the Soon section of Gates of Delirium by Yes.

This is brilliant! Rely like the idea of using socket wrench as a sliding capo. I will try that with my solid steel slide. Never thought of using painters tape, to hold down keys. What a fun idea. I have been using a matchbook or bent in half plastic card, shoved in between the keys, for the same effect. But how fun it would be, to start a set, by dramatically pulling out a roll of tape? 😃 Will defiantly try some of these ideas on my pedal steal, and cigar box guitar, when my Ebow arrives. Thanks for sharing, and best wishes for your continued fun/success with music 🎶🌎☮❤

@TheScreamingFrog916
@TheScreamingFrog916 9 месяцев назад
Switch Positions The PlusEBow has two modes of play. The regular or standard mode favors the fundamen- tal tones. The harmonic mode causes the string to vibrate with rich upper harmonics.

@@TheScreamingFrog916 Interesting. What position do you prefer?
@TheScreamingFrog916
@TheScreamingFrog916 9 месяцев назад
@@cyberprimate I just ordered one, so I have not tried it yet. I have something similar, built into one of my guitars, and as I recall, it changes what range of frequencies it emphasizes. So the basic answer is, I use the position that sounds good to me, for what I'm doing. Not sure I favor one more than the other, just different.

Never heard of Ebows, very interesting for players who want to experience other sounds. Not for Western Swing or Hank Williams, of course. Anyway, grats to your DIY project, I like the massive corpus of the guitar. It is also very large, you could have made a 8-string or even more, enough space. The pickup is also very well chosen. What I wouls miss is the volume/tone control. I made myself a lap steel 4 years ago. The good point is, you can always modify a lot of things. I added the tone contro only this years for getting theese uaaauaa sounds you can hear on old stuff. Kayton Roberts is a master of theese. I also changed the bridge to a roller bridge. I was lucky to find a 5-string roller bridge for bass, so I took two of them for my 8-string lap steel. Another thing I like is the Fender head you put on. For my next project I will go definitly this way. Playing lap steel is real fun, but building them is, too.

Thank you. But just to be clear, as I look down at the pedals in your camera shot, there is a "#1Echo" box to the right of the "BlueSky" pedal. What is the device on the other side of the BlueSky pedal. It appears to have 3, about 8" long rods or wires on its face and has a white plug in it?@@FabianHollandGuitar

Really interesting! Would you say that the ebow interacted better with the wound strings? I wonder what it would sound like to replace the unwound strings with wound ones--kind of like a reverse of Nashville or high tuning done on guitars.
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar 2 года назад
Hi, thanks for your question. You get a louder and more instant sound from the unwound strings and even though the wound strings are more melow they are also more predictable and have less unpredictable feedback and harmonics.

Would love to find an effects unit that could give the peddle steel to create something along the lines of the Beatles strings on I am the Walrus. There are so many things i thing yiu can so with this instrument. Sneaky Pete for the Flying Burrito Brothers experimented with stuff like this. Could easily see Rick Nielsen using this or having somethig weird built... 5 neck peddle steel 😅

I'm not impressed with the sound of the ebow. Sorry, but I wouldn't buy one. Not impressed with the cost of getting one either. Too high a cost, for too little a job it supposed to do. I see it as way, way over priced, and not worthwhile getting.
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar 2 года назад
Hi Wayne, no worries. I appreciate your honesty! It's certainly not for everyone. I do agree that the Ebow is quite pricey but there are cheaper options out there, TC electronic does one for much cheaper and also a company in the US called Sound Stone for $35. They all pretty much do the same thing although I haven't tried all of them so I can't say for sure but if you don't like that sustained sound then It's pointless getting one no matter how cheap it is.

Hey Fabian , that was really good stuff , getting an Lapsteel , whats your thought about singelcoil vs humbuker for ambient/Lo-Fi/cinamatic kinda music ?
@FabianHollandGuitar
@FabianHollandGuitar Год назад
Hi, thanks for the question. For ambient stuff usually I like to have a very clean signal so I prefer humbucker for that. It's always going to give you a cleaner signal than a single coil. But I still like the rough and ready single coil sound as well sometimes, just depends on what kind of sound I'm trying to get.
