This might actually be a great time to talk about colorism. Speaking as a light skinned black man, sometimes when you lend your voice to issues about the black community....a lot of people just don’t believe you. A lot of people in the black community (especially those who have a darker complexion) don’t really believe that light skinned blacks have it that bad. A lot people in the community don’t believe light skinned blacks have the same struggles, and will dismiss their personal walk through life, especially if one of their parents is white. Let’s be honest about this, if Drake was more vocal about certain issues within the black community, the first thing people would do is hold his blackness against him by diminishing and dismissing his legitimacy as a black man because he has a white Jewish mother. I remember when Drake did the Rap Radar interview in 2019 and he mentioned he won some type of award for being artist of the decade but he wasn’t acknowledged for being a black artist. As much as a revolutionary Colin Kaepernick is...he still gets the light skinned treatment. People respect and love Kap, but can’t fully wrap their arms around him because of the way he looks, and also because he was raised by white adoptive parents. I also think it’s complicated in general for light skinned blacks to be a voice for the community because I think most people within the community don’t want someone light skinned to be the face or representative of black people. Drake is unbelievably popular and I think a lot of people would feel some type of way if a good looking mixed guy from Canada is doing interviews with CNN about the racial tension in Ferguson, Missouri. So my question is, if people want Drake to be more vocal about certain issues, will he be counted/considered/acknowledged as a black man? Or will he just be light skinned? Because IMO, the only time light skinned people are considered “black” is when other people of the community don’t want them to have anything. And if people want Drake to lend his voice, you have to give him something in return, which is his blackness, no matter how light his skin is.
