Somewhere along the line (I'm not sure where) guys started thinking that to be the biggest/toughest guy they can be, they needed to own a big 4x4 ute. Regardless of the terrain the vehicle needed to navigate, their old V8 commodore/falcon no longer cut the mustard, so they did the swap. They would throw in all the gear - roll bars, LED fog lamps, big tyres and get the blackest tinting they could to make it look really mint when they pulled up at Bunnings. Now that they had a big manly toy, there was only one problem. They were now some of the slowest cars on the road. Most will compensate by 'pretending' it could go fast, namely sitting up your ass, drive around you angrily because you did not get out of their way, etc etc.... all that great stuff. They did have to be careful though, sometimes they might pick on an experienced Lancer driver that would basically leave them for dust because they just couldn't keep up. I think that is the target audience of these super ute races. Makes them feel better about having spent over 50k on a vehicle that goes about as fast as a 20k hatchback...
I couldn't agree more ,this love of 4x4 Thai diesel utes came at the expense of speed ,handling and our car industry. $55000 that only goes off road twice a year if that. As you say there egos don't really like it and it affects there road manners, at least ,this type of racing just high lights there shortcomings
my god how boring is this racing , 4x4s should stick to dirt trails, how is it you replace a category that's slower and sound crap, can't believe we went from v8 utes to 4 cylinder diesels WTH
Somehow, and I'm not quite sure how, the switch from petrol V8's to four cylinder diesels is known as 'progress'. Quite how a major backwards step can be known as progress, I don't know. Has there ever been a worse time to be a petrolhead?
