During the 2007 V8Supercar Championship Series Perkins Engineering (also known as Jack Daniel's Racing) ran two Rookie Drivers in Shane Price and Jack Perkins. Thanks to GM Holden, Mark Skaife made himself available to drive the #7 Jack Daniel's Racing VE Commodore PE 045, in an effort to help out the two rookies extracting more speed from the cars and indeed themselves.

100% Mat K. Those were the best days of the Supercars. Today it is getting very boring and set to become even more boring. All the greats of the sport have retired or moved on and it's a bunch of nobodies with no personality now. Lowndes, Skaife, Seton, Jim Richards, Bargwana, Bowe, Crompton, Radisich, Ambrose, Murphy, Jones, and of course Larry Perkins !! Those were the days.
@matk4731

@@tonymontana897 & you could stick those blokes in anything & they would race it hard. Yep it certainly has become too sterile now.

@tonymontana897 3 года назад
@@matk4731 Amen to that mate ! Now they want to go to stupid flappy paddles. Supercars is finished in my mind. I have VHS tapes of all racing rounds starting from the year 2001. The first year Lowndes defected to Ford coincidentally, and I wish I started taping them earlier on. Nonetheless, I can always go back and watch all the best racing action whenever I want. I hope to have my tapes digistized someday too.
@mabuhayimplottingyourdemis423
@@tonymontana897 They're still using sticks, the new guys like Brodie Kostecki, Will Brown, & Broc Feeney had personalities & you fail to see that because you're blinded by nostalgia.
@marcpaola1371
@marcpaola1371 2 месяца назад
@mabuhayimplottingyourdemis423 yes they use a stick still but it's not a H pattern shift. As far as nostalgia goes, I was lucky enough to grow up with the Brock's, Moffat, Johnson, Richards, Grice when they were at their peak, I was a Brock fan, right up through to now. Today is is sterile, the drivers have next to no personality or charisma, nothing like brock Johnson, lowndes, murphy, etc..supercars it self is a shadow of what it once was. It started to decline from around 2013. It's not Nostalgia, it's just a fact.

So refreshing hearing the engine note and not the whine of a transaxle.
@timjohnun4297
@timjohnun4297 3 года назад
The cars have run a straight cut gearbox since the inception of the category, the gear whine has been around a very long time. I think even the Group A cars ran a Hollinger box back in the day

@jmoz3213 3 года назад
Most of the noise is the toothed oil pump drive anyway lol.
@timjohnun4297
@timjohnun4297 3 года назад
@@jmoz3213 it's easy to tell the difference. If the whine corresponds to engine RPM it will be the belt drive. If it corresponds to road speed it's the straight cut gears in the box. In most of the in car footage the box is the louder of the 2 (Continues to get louder even through the gear changes)

Always interesting to hear Skaifey’s feedback on car setup. It seems funny that not much changes from being at a V8 Supercar test day to being out at the kart club. Keep up the great work Jack, it gives a great insight into Perkins Engineering. Also good that the team stayed in the Mallee so to speak.

I found your channel a while ago and loved the technical info (as well as a the historic twist through the era that I was most obsessed with) was really great, but I got distracted so I've just made it back to binge-watch as many of your episodes as possible! I line the first bit of the video, seeing Skaife deliberately manipulating the car not to make it go fast, but rather to see what it does and how it reacts. You can tell he was genuinely trying to help them even though they were technically rivals

I feel like a transition back to "H" pattern gearboxes may go a long way to addressing fans' feelings that the cars no longer represent a "stock" car. If Murphy can do a 2.06 at Bathurst using an "H" pattern box they aren't exactly slow.
@perkinsengineering
@perkinsengineering 2 года назад
Oh 100%. The problem with H pattern in the end was the drivers were too quick with say 3rd to 4th gear. They would smash the dogs off the front side of 4th gear and they would be shagged after say 400km. With the Holinger sequential, through the barrel engagement the drivers couldn’t beat the shift and gears would wear out at 2000-3000km not the dogs
