In the early 80's I worked for a wholesale company that supplied all of the Eckerd's stores here in the Mobile area. I really enjoyed working with them either as a salesman, delivery, or as a set-up man for fixtures and displays. The managers were great and I always loved dealing with them. I hated to see them disappear.

I grew up in Los Angeles County in the 1950s and ‘60s. Our go-to drug store was Thrifty Drugs, known for their award-winning ice cream. The location where we shopped was connected to Ralphs Market, Del Amo and Paramount Boulevards, in the city of Lakewood. We also had Sav-on Drugs at the super-regional Lakewood Center. Sav-on also sold ice cream, much to my parents' delight. I can still see them strolling along the sidewalk outside the shopping center with ice cream cones in hand. Mom and Dad, RIP. Although we never shopped there, I also recall Rexall Drugs in nearby Long Beach.

I was born in 1971. Going to Eckerd's was always a treat for me, because my mom would let me pick out something from the candy aisle. I shopped there until CVS bought them out. That was a sad day for me. I still won't set foot in CVS, preferring to shop at Walgreens, because I look at CVS as the company that killed Eckerd's. In reality, it's clear that JC Penny screwed Eckerd's up, and I don't shop there either.

JC Penney split Eckerd up, with stores in the northern states going to Jean Coutu (Canadian company who subsequently sold them to Rite Aid) and the southern states' stores going to CVS.

CVS, Walgreen, etc., certainly still exist, but they’ve become a weird sort of dollar store for cosmetics. It’s been years since I’ve seen a true, stand-alone ‘drug store’ of the sort you used to see in every city and town. Drug stores were all killed when pharmacies opened in supermarkets.

My dad had an independent pharmacy that was pretty much killed off by the big chains. His suppliers couldn’t sell him a lot of things that he could buy cheaper at a chain drugstore or Kmart. We’re starting to see a return of independents in the Philadelphia region. Of course, when it comes to prescription services, even the biggest drug store Chains are suffering due to mail order prescription services. It’s funny that he said that Eckerd made most of his money back in the day on prescription services. Seems to me that Eckerd flip that. They made the pharmacy counter is pretty much an appendage to what is really a convenience store.
@TenOrbital
@TenOrbital 3 года назад
The supermarket chains want to do that here 🇦🇺 But our pharmacy peak is one of the most powerful in the country. They have held the supermarkets off and regularly try to take functions away from GPs like vaccinations and minor sick certificates. Leading to rows with doctors’ associations. But while some pharmacies (‘chemists’) have a gift shop feel, they never sold tobacco or offered a diner or milk bar counter like in the US.

Eckerd was a small part of my childhood in the Houston area, used to go there all the time. The stores could be a little on the sketchy side late at night. To make it even more sketchy the lights in the parking lot made a loud buzzing sound. The one we went to used to be a Mading‐Dugan Drug store before the early 70s. The location was still there as a CVS till a couple of years ago, but it has since closed. Was never the same after CVS took over.

In early 80’s Eckerd’s opened in Texas. I’ve shopped anything including my prescription. Some locations are 24 hours for our convenience. I remembered in late 90’s that Eckerd’s accepts our JC Penney’s cards. Built their own stores until 2001 when, I was shocked that CVS have taken over SOME locations. Some repurposed. And some are still up for sale. And in 1985, Treasury Drugs in Kansas accepts JC Penney’s cards too. But merging with JC Penney’s was a bad idea. CVS is too expensive that, I don’t shop there only at Walgreens, Walmart, and prescriptions that I got at my clinic only.

Prior to the mid 80s, eckerd’s was a good company to work for. After that what the presenter doesn’t tell you but the company was subjected to a hostile takeover by a foreign investment firm. To thwart that effort, many of the senior executives executed a leveraged buy out to take the whole thing private again. Big discount chains and drug departments in grocery stores really cut into drug store chain business and Eckerd hemorrhaged money for years. The real reason eckerd sold to jc penny’s was because it extinguished a huge pile of debt and the former executives walked out with some cash and shares of the latter. During the lbo period, things got really rough and the stores were squeezed for as much profit as possible. Lots of bad decisions were made along the way like buying competitors they really should not have bought, making deals with suppliers for stock which never sold like Lisa Frank stationary and lack of upkeep further exacerbated the debt situation. I saw the ipo balance sheet and the company hadn’t made money in years when it was proposed in 1993 or 1994 prior to the sale to penny’s. I had never heard the terms negative capitalization or retained deficit before. It’s like Eckerds learned their financial strategies from the federal government. When Jack had control, and in the time he had it, it was well run, employees were taken care and things were very profitable.

I worked at a "Hoosier" known drug store from the fall of 1970 - December, 1972 .The company: Haag Drug. Its main competition was another " Hoosier" ( Indiana) company called Hooks. In those years, Rexall was also around as a chain drug store and Rexall had stores in other states. None of the three drug store companies exist anymore. As far as I know, Haag's was bought out by People's Drug chain...eventually, People's was bought by CVS. As to Eckerd Drug...they were the highest quality chain drug store in the South. It's a shame that time after time every major retailer eventually puts their company stock ownership into another and, many-a-time, the one buying it goes out of business. All my working years - some 40 plus, and retired 5 and-a-half years, retail has been my career...and several of those various companies I worked for are no longer around. What a shame.

I loved Eckerd (and Walgreens for that matter, which has had stores in this city for a LONG time) but as a true YAT from New Orleans, my all-time favorite drug chain was K&B

What is YAT?
@trentpettit6336
@trentpettit6336 3 года назад
@@bostongirlsandy Thanks for asking! There are several different accents (I would say at least five) that different people from New Orleans have, but one accent which most blue-collar white people (and some mixed-race white/black Creole people too) in our wonderful city once had is called the Yat accent. Sadly most people in America outside Louisiana (and maybe the other Gulf Coast states) don't realize how most whites and Creoles in New Orleans have this very unique accent. There seems to be this assumption in most of America that most New Orleanians (many of us call ourselves Yats, including me) have the exact same Southern accent which can be found in every Southern state, but we actually have an accent which is quite unique because it sounds a lot more like a traditional New York (city) accent than it does the traditional Southern accent found outside New Orleans. Since you (I assume based on your name!) are from Boston, I also should point out that the Yat accent also is rather similar to the traditional Boston accent. People in Rhode Island also have an accent which shares lots of similarities with Yat. The celebrity chef named Emeril (Lagasse) is originally from Fall River, Massachusetts... but he has spent much of his life in New Orleans and has become an expert on the local cuisine here. I've met more than one person in my life who mistakenly assumed he was a Yat (due to his accent) before they found out he actually is a New Englander and still has his native accent! And there are MANY Yats (myself included) who have been mistaken for either New Yorkers or New Englanders (especially Bostonians) when traveling to almost anywhere in the USA outside Louisiana. Even when I've been to North Texas, people assumed I was a New Yorker, and so did people in Florida (near Tampa) perhaps because there are LOTS of New Yorkers and New Englanders who move down to Florida. The Yat accent does have some similarities to the traditional Southern accent, but most people in America (especially California) seem to think it sounds much more Northeastern than it does Southern. I'm sure there are plenty of Southerners (mostly those outside Louisiana) who might be fooled when hearing a Yat accent and assume the person talking is a Northern "Yankee" (and a Yankee from either of the two Northern cities which are considered the two most "Yankee" cities anywhere in America!) instead of a Southerner from the most famous city in the Deep South! I highly recommend you do a Google search for Yat accent videos on RU-vid... there's a RU-vid user by the name of "mehrvigne" who made a FANTASTIC video about the Yat accent and the related New Orleans dialect. Does she sound like a Rhode Islander to you?

Why is it when going to the drug store you have to walk all the way to the back to get your prescription filled. It's bad enough when your feeling ill and have to go all the way to the back of the store. On the other hand, if you went to the drug store to buy cigarettes, they are at the front counter. It don't make sense.
