A incredible weekend at Cambridge, Cambridge North, Shepreth, Foxton and Ely stations during the 2nd and final weekend of ECML diverts via Cambridge and Ely.
Shepreth:
Shepreth railway station serves the village of Shepreth in Cambridgeshire, England. The station is on the Cambridge Line, 49 miles 67 chains (80.21 km) from London King's Cross.
History:
It was opened in 1851 by the Royston and Hitchin Railway as the northern terminus of an extension of the original route from Royston, after earlier plans by the Eastern Counties Railway to build a Cambridge to Bedford line through the village fell through due to lack of finance. The ECR did complete the line north through to a junction with its main line from London to Cambridge in 1852 and initially ran services on the R&HR, but they later gave way to the Great Northern Railway when its lease of the Royston company expired in 1866. The GNR then began running through trains between Kings Cross & Cambridge over the line from 1 April that year, having gained full running powers over ECR metals and access to Cambridge station as part of an agreement ratified by parliament two years previously.
Goods traffic was handled at the station until 1965. From 1978, through trains to the capital temporarily ceased when electric operation was inaugurated to Royston as part of the Kings Cross Outer Suburban electrification scheme. Passengers then had to use a Cambridge to Royston DMU shuttle and change at the latter station for London. Government approval for extending the wires through to Cambridge was eventually granted in 1987 (as a 'fill-in' scheme to link wired routes either side) and the work was completed 12 months later, allowing through running to Kings Cross to resume
Platform 2 (for trains to Cambridge) was extended in Summer 2017 to be able to accommodate 8-car trains (including Class 700 units), without straddling the level crossing. Although platform 1 was not lengthened, 8-car trains now call there using Selective door operation which opens the doors on the front four carriages only. Shepreth will be connected to the Thameslink network via the canal tunnels at Kings Cross St Pancras from 2018.
Services:
There is a generally an hourly stopping service to London King's Cross southbound and Cambridge northbound, seven days a week. Service doubles to two trains per hour in each direction during weekday peak periods.

Great video mate! I spent that Saturday going from Whittlesea ending in Cambridge North and just uploaded my video of that. Also I was at Cambridge North the same time as you, at the other end with the brown bag.

Where are the diversion points from the mainline on the ECML and the Cambridge Branch ?
@EpicThe112

Just have a question is it possible for a London King's cross train to actually be diverted towards Liverpool Street because the main London to Cambridge line West Anglia Main Line terminates there instead of using East Coast Mainline and Cambridge line? Excellent Job here

It's possible, but happens extremely rarley

Thanks for a very enjoyable video. A couple of questions for anyone in the know to answer: 1. For the diverted LNER, Hull Trains, Grand Central, how are route knowledge requirements 'covered'? 2. When there is a stand-alone signal box, such as between Peterborough and ely, how do they manage the handover to/from the 'regional' signalling centres? Thanks in advance.

1. The route knowledge requirements for all drivers on LNER, Hull Trains and Grand Central who are driving on the days when the diversions will take action are driving on their simulators from home until they can remember all the knowledge they need required for the routes they shall be diverting via, however there are some other drivers who need route knowledge crew in the cabs with them. 2. The local signal boxes which have identification towards the name of the box who controls the level crossings, the signaller has to control the signals manually from the box.

How do you know which train is where and what it's identification is? I watched a vid of a guy at a level crossing and on his phone he had what I think was maybe an app, on this app it showed the nearby trains, who they were and what signal they were at and what light that signal was it. Having looked on the app store i can't see anything like this unfortunately, any ideas? Great vid btw :)

It's not on the app store. Here are some links most spotters use including me: OpenTrainTimes: www.opentraintimes.com/maps Signal Maps: signalmaps.co.uk Real Time Trains: www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced Hope it helps

Pardon my ignorance, but what route did the diversions take. I get they left/joined the ECML at Peterborough, but what about the other end of the diversion?
@RichardChalklin
@RichardChalklin 5 лет назад
They rejoin at Hitchin junction so it's quite a long loop

@@RichardChalklin That's a hell of a diversion!

It is but the only one available and of course it's not electrified between Peterborough and Ely so the 91's have to be towed by diesel on that stretch

In the 2nd level crossing clip how come a class 43 went past after a 365 did?

why do they hook up 91's to 87's on these diverts
@dominicfindlay
@dominicfindlay 4 года назад
The power lines aren't able to provide enough power. They run the 800s through on diesel mode also.
@martinjh999
@martinjh999 5 лет назад
19:13 WHy wasn't the 91 under its own power? Presuming parts of the diversion are not electrified.
@RichardChalklin
@RichardChalklin 5 лет назад
The Ely to Peterborough line is unelectrified. I think the 91's take to much power for the electrification between Ely and Hitchin

Thanks - Should have realised - Nearest train station to my parents who live that way is Ely and the train I get goes from Peterborough to Ely!!
