Small recipes are FAR less stressful - happy to help :) As far as Castor oil is concerned, I would not recommend leaving it out. I use it in almost all of my soap recipes because it's the only oil that contains ricinoleic acid. It's a powerful lathering component that ensures strong bubbles!

Hi Tanya, if I wanted to add an essential oil, would I put a few drops in with the coconut and olive oil mixture?
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 3 года назад
The amount depends on the essential oil, but you can add many of the common ones at 3% by weight of an entire soap recipe. That's usually about 3 teaspoons of essential oil, that you stir in after the soap comes to trace (thickens). More on using essential oil in soap is here: lovelygreens.com/make-soap-with-essential-oils/

Hi! Loved your recipe and really enjoyed the process of making my first batch of soap! One question I have is that after taking the soap bars of our my mold, they had a strong shea butter smell. I did notice that my shea butter had a very strong smell as i was putting it in my mix and also the bottom half of my shea butter container was slightly darker than the top, so maybe the strong smell is from the shea butter going bad? (i just bought it, so its unfortunate if its already gone bad!)
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 2 года назад
It sounds like you have a container of unrefined shea butter. It has that characteristic scent and to avoid it, use refined shea. It loses all scent once it's been cleaned in the refining process.

I’m just going to try soap making. I’ve such issues with soaps due to eczema & psoriasis. I can’t use commercial soaps at all but some handcrafted soaps have been fine What I’m finding in almost all soap recipes is the use of both shea & coconut oil. I absolutely can’t use either of those on my skin. Do you know an alternative ? Do I have to use any solid fat at all ? The oils that my skin can handle are almond, sunflower, safflower, grape seed & at times olive oil. Could I just use any of these in combination ? I’m excited to try soap making but would like to end up with a product I can use 🥰
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 2 года назад
Hi Roxie, the oils you use in soap recipes are chemically changed into soap. That means that they're not the same as they once were. So if you're talking about having issues with a particular oil on your skin, you'll likely have no issues with soap made with that oil.

Just one question, if i wanted to add essential oil, would it be 2% of total oils weight?
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 3 года назад
It depends on the essential oil. Some you can only add in lower quantities since they contain natural compounds that in concentrated amounts can be skin irritants. Others you can add more of, but again, need to adhere to guidelines per specific type of essential oil. You also should not use more than the highest usage rate for an essential oil total when working with blends. For example, clary sage essential oil can be used in soap at 2% of the total recipe. Lavender essential oil can be used at up to 3%. If you wanted to create a blend, the total amount of essential oil you can use in the recipe would be 3% by weight. You could use up to 2% of clary sage and the rest (the remaining 1%) could be lavender. I base my usage rates on what I am legally permitted to put into soap commercially in the UK/European Union and further information on other essential oils and their rates of usage are over here: lovelygreens.com/make-soap-with-essential-oils/

All real natural soap, including every one you've ever used, is made with lye. There's zero lye left in the soap afterwards though thanks to chemistry. This is one of the most eco-friendly natural soap recipes you'll find 👌🧼

Sodium hydroxide is not eco friendly. Just adding carrots or natural oils is not enough. And it is wrong to tell so many people that sodium hydroxide is eco-friendly.

Your title says eco-friendly recipe and all you're doing is giving instructions on what to use and what to do but where's the recipe so we can see how your soap came out.
