I really really like this method of soap making it brings back childhood memories. My grandma used to make hot process soap but not in a slow cooker. When she made soap it was a family event. She used a large black pot placed over a fire. She made old school lye soap and large batches for the family and her friends.

I can tell you are more of a cold process soaper!! You know you don't need to cool the lye solution with hot process soap? you only do that with cold process. I just dissolve lye and chuck it in the melted oils, absolutely not necessary. You also don't need to go in at an angle with the stick blender as you are cooking soap that is another CP tip, but not for HP as you are stirring it whilst it cooks a few times. You also don't need to cool it down before adding yoghurt and EO that is a bit of a myth in the HP soapmaking world. Great video btw and the soap looks fab! (it also 'should' be cured the same length of time you would CP soap which is 4-6 weeks and of course it will improve with age) I did CP for about 2 years but much prefer HP and have been doing that for about 5 years, so much easier and I you don't have to worry about soda ash or soap batter seizing etc.
@dr.bijaykumarparida7321
@dr.bijaykumarparida7321 3 года назад
Great explanation ! Please answer my questions 1) Is there any difference in quality of HP Soap and CP soap ? (As HP soap is forced for a quicker saponification where CP soap takes it longer ) Do they give equal benefits for our skin ? 2) Can we make 100% olive oil HP soap? 3) what is the curing period for 100 % Olive oil HP soap ?
@sarahdavis1198
@sarahdavis1198 3 года назад
@@dr.bijaykumarparida7321 no quality difference it is more of a personal preference. HP soap still needs the same amount of cure time as CP. Yes you can make 100% olive oil soap HP, in fact I did it about 8 weeks ago at very high temps with a very steep water discount and I am testing it monthly to see if it improves as other soapmakers more experienced than me say that it doesn't need the long 6-12 month cure time of normal Castile. It does have a different feel to it and can be a bit 'slimy' again that is open to debate. I much prefer animal fats in my soap now as they are resemble our skin oils better than nut or vegetable oils and are very creamy.

If so, I can avoid purchasing a slow cooker right now... once more thank you so much 🙏🏼 Loads of Love from my 💚 to your 💚

@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 3 года назад
You can use any cold-process soap recipe to make hot-process soap, including smaller 1-lb batches. The risk there is that if the oils/lye-solution are too shallow in the slow cooker, it could splatter up caustic soap batter. Not good. I'd recommend making a full loaf of soap at a time with this method and you can use less expensive oils if you wish. That means you can use my 100% olive oil soap recipe (scale it up to an 800g batch) and use oil from the supermarket (if it's well within the best-by date). lovelygreens.com/simple-castile-soap-recipe-make-olive-oil-soap/

Hiya, cold-process, and hot-process are just two different ways to make a soap recipe. Yes, you can use the recipe, but make it using the cold-process method 👍 For cold process, use less water, though - 2x the amount of lye by weight. You can omit the yoghurt or stir it with a little water (1 TBSP) and add at trace.

After you make hot process soap in the slow cooker, can you clean and use the cooker as normal after wards or do you need a specific cooker for soap making only?

Only ever use it for soap :)

Can the soap be poured into individual soap molds instead of loaf?

Good stuff, but quick question? Isn't sodium hydroxide hazardous? Is it bad for the skin?
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 3 года назад
On it's own, yes, it is hazardous. It goes through a chemical change when you mix it with lipids though, and transforms into natural soap. All soap is made with lye, and sodium hydroxide is the main form of lye. However, after the cook in the slow cooker theres zero sodium hydroxide left in the soap. It's all been used up.

Tanya, do you keep your bowls, crock pot and stick blender specific for soap.making? I was just wondering if after cleaning if they could be used for food prep.
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 3 года назад
Crockpot no, but anything plastic yes. Lye isn't the issue though -- it's essential oils. There's no lye left on any plastic, metal, or glass after use but essential oils have a tendency to seep into porous materials.

Great Video! What's the brand of the fragrance oil you used? I noticed when I use pure essential oils its not as strong on the fragrance end. I would imagine fragrance oil would be the way to go as it uses synthetics and natural essential oils together

If you are using one cup of sodium hydroxide please how many cups of water will u use because I don't have the measuring cylinder
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 2 года назад
Soap recipes and ingredient amounts are always by weight, for safety. Cups and volume measurements are too inaccurate for chemistry. Invest in an inexpensive kitchen scale, or see if you can borrow one from someone, if you'd like to make soap from scratch :)

Tanya, I don't understand why you add superfat before the cook is completed to ensure your sf remains? In the US it is taught to do it just before the yogurt after Vaseline stage.
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 3 года назад
You can do it either way Norine, and if you do add it later, you will ensure that the mango butter is 100% of the superfat. However, for beginners I feel that it's easier to do steps earlier than later. Less of a chance to forget to put ingredients in, which is a common mistake.

Hi Tanya thank you for sharing this video. I have a question if you could please help me with it ,I tried yesterday to do hot process following your procedure but I have used just olive oil however it still vasilliny and from inside just for shard crust from top? Do you thing I need to wait long for it to harden since I used just olive oil?
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 2 года назад
Hot process soap can get crusty on the top because of heat and moisture loss. Keeping a tight lid on, and stirring, helps to stop that from happening. It's not the end of the world though, and is still good soap.

Can you substitute the mango butter for any other hard butter like shea, cocoa or tallow? Cheers for the amazing video x
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens Год назад
You can but would need to run the recipe through the soap calculator again to get a new lye amount. It will change slightly if you change any of the oils or their quantities.

Do you need to keep all of your soap making equipment separate (i.e. slow cooker, immersion blender, spatula, etc), or is it safe to use the same equipment - after you wash it, of course - for making food that you eat?
@sarahdavis1198
@sarahdavis1198 3 года назад
Best to keep your soapmaking utensils separate. I bought all of mine from opshops (thrift).
