A Florida Red Tide outbreak along the southwest coast of Florida is killing fish and other marine life as well as causing respiratory issues for beach goers for the first weekend of summer. Florida Red Tide is caused by the karenia brevis algae which emits an airborne neuro-toxin when it blooms. It is natural occurring but is believe to be exaggerated in frequency and intensity by fertilizer run-off from coastal development and unexpected heavy rain such as that from pre-season storm Alberto.

Jesus. Still. We spent fifteen minutes walking a track NEAR the beach last week and came away with streaming eyes, coughing etc. It isn't just in the water, the air has particles. I can't believe people are swimming in it. At Stump Pass Beach there were so many dead fish in the water.

I used to go to Englewood Beach and Stump Pass as a kid on vacation many years ago. When there was red tide it ruined our vacation. I remember having a sore throat and headaches. How these people stay on the beach is beyond my understanding.

We went down last week. Sure we had reservations and sure we lucked out and had access to a pool but there was no way we were on the beach, even though it is our only vacation this year. Seriously the air down there basically triggers asthma symptoms right now.

Coral reefs are dying slowly & once they’re gone were gone. We are destroying our environment, wish the government can do more to help.

Coral reefs that are adapted to higher acidity and temperatures are thriving. Even sanitizer chemicals only kill 99.9% of bacteria. 60% of coral that arent adapted to higher temps will probably die, but that just leaves more food and space for the other 40%.

I'm sure hotel rates are at a deep discount but jeesh why go to a polluted beach filled with rotting fish to "enjoy" a day at the beach?

I have been in Naples since 93... Red tide is a regular occurrence. Some years the dead fish are stacked 3' high as far as the eye can see. Front end loaders come in and haul them to dump!

Is this an unusually bad one? We have been going to Englewood for about 17 years and were really shocked. We had seen it once before (2004 I think) but it was nothing like this. We were down for last week and it seemed constant. Now I am wondering if we just really lucked out dodging it...

Richard Sawyer i was Born and Raised in SWF... If you think millions of dead fish on the beach is normal you are a real Idiot lol!! Just because you have seen it happen since you have been here, does not make it right. This goes back to the early part of the 20th century when the drained the everglades and started farming surgar!! Stop acting like you know what your talking about, and actualy do some research on the history of the area!

Sorry, but I would not let my kids anywhere near that water. If the brevetoxin B is killing fish, turtles and dolphins it can kill humans. Our sodium channels on our nerves are the same as other vertebrates.
