This week's show is dedicated to a discussion of the signs of US capitalism's decline. Wolff explores the passage of US capitalism from its birth, through its state-supported growth and expansion, to its global peaking from 1945 to 2000. He presents the causes of its ongoing decline this 21st century, and then offers a conclusion on the right, center and left political responses to decline.

This is a great and informative video. Prof. Wolff has the remarkable ability to make complex economic and political developments, both current and historical, one coherent, understandable whole. He gives it all perspective and coherence. Having spent most of my adult life in the field of adult education and having originally majored in economics, I can state unequivocally that this ability is the mark of an extremely gifted teacher/lecturer/professor. It is a gift, a talent which so many scholars lack. Prof. Wolff's ability to make complex subjects both easy to understand and interesting is a strength indeed. Thank you, Prof. Wolff!

Well you can go to college and pay to listen to this or you can be here and get it for free. I like Prof. Wolff because at the very least he gives a rational alternative perspective. Where l'd disagree is that Marxism is the answer, because the countries that went down that path had their own catastrophes and that included economic catastrophes, environmental catastrophes and social catastrophes. I think he might agree as he has pointed out in other talks how Russia, China and other failed that the solution isn't a puritanical 100% Marxist state anymore than it is a puritanical 100% Capitalist state, but that the solution lies somewhere in between. Many point to the Nordic models where they have incredibly strong socialist systems wrapped around democratic and capitalist systems. The Norwegians instead of wasting their oil & gas wealth as others have did an almost communist thing by pooling the income into a sovereign wealth fund that they then used capitalist methodologies to enhance.
@xelakram
@xelakram 3 года назад
@@tonywilson4713 Your ideas and mine seem to be pretty similar. I have no time for communism or real socialism either. For me, the answer lies in a mixed economy. It has been proven that capitalism is the system which delivers prosperity. But it needs to be tamed. Ray capitalism, American-style, is clearly NOT the answer. The secret, in my opinion, is to harvest the fruits of capitalism in such a way that everyone benefits from it. That means healthcare for all as a right, great infrastructure, great free education, etc. It can be done once we get the ideologues out of our way. Capitalism comes in many guises. The American model is but one of them: the worst kind of capitalism! It doesn't have to be like that.

It means that politics gets very nasty and polarized between nationalism and socialism. We are seeing it everywhere, not just in the US

That's often the external form, but the real conflict is between working and ruling classes.
@indricotherium4802
@indricotherium4802 3 года назад
It has to be said that the progressives contribute to that polarisation when they treat centrists with as much political scorn as they do the right. There needs to be a clearer realisation that the real enemy is the extreme and aggressive zeal of populist, nationalist ideology on the hard right.
@mikemurray2027
@mikemurray2027 3 года назад
@@indricotherium4802 'Progressives' do not fight fascism and they resist and oppose taking action against the current class structures. So, inevitably, when capitalism is in crisis and the ruling class turns to fascism, the liberals are as much use as a chocolate teapot, attacking the left as much as the right, if not more. That's certainly what has happened in the UK over the last five years, with liberals and 'progressives' actually campaigning alongside the far-right on the trumped-up 'anti-semitism' nonsense. And they knew it was all untrue, but that did not stop them. They are very bad at politics. I think there are many reasons for that, including the failure to accept that class is the significant structural classifier of society, the false idea that capitalism and current class society is somehow 'moderate', the 'middle ground', etc. In reality, it is extreme, corrupt, brutal and increasingly authoritarian.
@indricotherium4802
@indricotherium4802 3 года назад
@@mikemurray2027 : I agree 100% that the left and the centre (I'm assuming this is what you broadly mean by 'liberals') haven't learned to use democratic, non-violent means of resistance convincingly, forcefully, strategically or cleverly enough. The right has learned how to keep on the front foot and, with the help of big tech in which they are streets ahead, are entrenching making it harder and harder for the 'liberals' in the US and the UK to get back on terms. The Libs seem to behave also as if nothing is urgent: they have all the time in the world and a jolly good moan will put it right. The second largest existential threat to the world behind the Republican Party is Democrat strategists.
@jeffarnold3800
@jeffarnold3800 3 года назад
@@mikemurray2027 that’s why it becomes so nasty. As the ruling class increasingly captures politics, the political fight becomes further and further divorced from the primary class struggle. So we arrive at a situation whereby working class people are supporting the ruling class through Party A or Party B, while deluding themselves into think that their party represents them and the other party is entirely responsible for the societal decline. When in reality it is the privatization of politics that is primarily responsible for the decline (by decline, I mean the steady erosion of controls on capitalism’s natural tendency to rapidly and strongly concentrate wealth). So it is a cannibalization of sorts among the working class, and a brilliant divide and conquer strategy concocted by the ruling class. That is something of an oversimplification, as of course you must also consider the middle classes and their tendency to side with the ruling class over the working class in many instances

For about 25-30 years from 1945 up until around 1979 when Ronald Reagan and his neoliberals got into the White House. The United States coming off the gold standard was the watershed moment that symbolised the beginning of the end for American hegemony. Up until China opened up in the 1980's and began competing directly with it a decade later, the USA had almost uncontested dominance outside the Soviet block.

@Larpy McLarperstein If you adjust for inflation this isn't true... The 2009 Recovery Act (under Obama) although it spent more in actual dollars -- on a per capita basis in 2009-adjusted dollars, the Recovery Act cost $2,738, while the New Deal programs cost $5,231. Under Trump your point is correct -- the CARES act was more than double what was spent under FDR... This was reported by Fox news so it's no doubt the fault of the Democrats ... Most Republicans were probably thinking let 'em eat cake...A pretty good case can be made that the workers benefited more under FDR's policies than under DJT's..
@gardnjw
@gardnjw 3 года назад
@Larpy McLarperstein My original point was about the so-called Golden Age of capitalism and not the size of the government. I'm talking about what took place after the Bretton Woods conference when the Keynesian economic policies were in place... they worked fairly well until the mid 70s when "stagflation" set in... The reduction in government size were only with the policies that favored the working class and only the business class benefited from them.. The Keynesian policies enabled Wall Street speculators to undermine the health of the economy because they were so predictable... Who's denying reality? Real wages have not increased much at all (if at all) -- the wealthy pay less taxes in proportion to their wealth and income inequality has reached obscene magnitudes...

It should be noted that Hitler could never have accomplished what he did without the assistance of American corporations. In fact, the United States did not enter the European theater until the Soviet union started pushing Germany back. A small country such as Singapore, which has no natural resources, succeeds in making it into a technology and services led country. This means that most of its people are well educated and competent in what they do. Similarly, a landlocked country such as Switzerland continues to prosper and enjoys high living standard. For large countries with huge population you really need to fire on all cylinders in order to provide employment for majority of the workers. This means large scale manufacturing, agriculture, natural resources, technology and services. A decline in any one of those sectors will have significant adverse consequences as there are not enough jobs elsewhere. Those in charge of government don't govern properly and plan long-term, leaving it all to the businessmen, who will see only higher profit by using cheaper labour in other overseas countries. I have seen this phenomenon in Britain over the last 50 years where many jobs have moved abroad, including service sector jobs. Now politicians in many countries have found this common problem. They have woken up and try to deflect the problem by blaming on China. The fact of the matter is, if it is not China, it would be someone else, for example, India, Vietnam etc etc where there is plentiful of cheap labour. Capitalism only sees the $ sign. But Western politicians will defend till their death the Western way of democracy, human rights and freedom, so capitalism in their eyes is the most successful system that champions all those values. They are conflicting themselves when asserting that statement.

I remember the day JFK was killed. I was in High School, English class. The Principal came in, interrupted the class to tell us the president had been shot. No one knew what to say. My teacher Sally Bailey said one short sentence; "Our country has become decadent". She was right.

Unregulated capitalism represents the inexorable flow of wealth from the poor and middle classes to the rich and powerful. And, when the poor and middle classes can no longer afford to buy what the rich and powerful have to sell, it collapses under its own weight, creating the boom/bust cycles we see in our economy. Therefore, what is needed is a feedback loop that redistributes wealth from the rich and powerful who control the system back to the poor and middle classes who fuel the system. Failure to provide such a feedback loop of wealth WILL cause the ultimate failure of the system.

@nobodyspecial2053

If you're looking to leave the country, I'd suggest leaving the continent, because if the USA goes down we're taking both Mexico and Canada down with us in the best case scenario. Worst case scenario is that you might need to find yourself in deserted island in the middle of the ocean or hunker down in some Cabin in the Woods cuz we're bringing down the rest of the world with us.

There is no War in Afghantisan there is no War in Iraq and there never have been , there have been invasions assaults and colonization of those nations by a nation built on warring attacks identical to the atrocities of the European empires..The US is the pitbull for those empires to keep the abuses of power continuing ,assuming the the same postures patterns and agendas..Telling Americans that we are doing all this to protect the nation and spread democracy is laughable and should be apparent to anyone that has any capacity to think for themselves..The language may be slighty different but the actions and results are exactly the same...

RH hits on the nose: "Pity that most Americans have no idea about it." And HOW MANY TIMES do we have to repeat the words (and paraphrases) of philosopher George Santayana that if we don't heed the lessons of history we repeat, in a seemingly endless loop, the same dreadful mistakes? Certainly, the reasons are many, but one that I think is important is our failure to effectively pass the message to our young ones. I was born in 1951 in Alabama. As a black kid I came to know what it means to be terrorized. Everyone knows the story, we fought back, and we had some victories---thanks largely to those Americans from every walk of life who stood with us. BUT, no matter how much I talk to the younger people about all the tears and blood the majority SOMEHOW can't fully relate to that pain. In 2014 I left the states and came here to central Germany to help my partner care for her elderly parents. Most of the young ones I encounter here are also tired of hearing about the past, just as the extreme right ONCE AGAIN is on the rise in Germany. And typically, LOTS of angry people blaming the wrong people.
