Aired 1/24/17. On Today's Economic Update, Professor Wolff bring ups a research article from the Economy Policy Institute, which complied numerous charts that compared workers's wages from 1985 to 2015. The article compared white men's and black men's wages as well as white women's and black women's wages. The study shows that black men's wages were down 6% lower than what they were in 1980, whereas white men's wages went down 1%. On the other hand. Black women's wages increased 15% and White women's wages went up 31%. The growth in productivity in all labors rose consistently over 35 years, the productivity levels were much higher than worker's wages altogether. Professor Wolff indicates that the fact that male workers did worse than their female counterparts may have had something to do with the outcome of election since many workers, since many of them feel disenfranchised and left behind.
Mr Wolff mentions that the British Parliament has intentions of promoting upward mobility by eliminating unpaid internships for more than one month in Britain. British legislators have expressed interest in abolishing unpaid internships for more than one month since several members of Parliament deem it as a system that preys upon the most economically disadvantaged and favors the most affluent sectors of society.
According to Mr. Wolff, the big banks are quite satisfied with the Trump administration, even more so than they would've been under Democrats because they are counting on a reduction of regulations and a relaxation of the Dodd Frank rules. Professor Wolff addresses a study conducted by United Way Worldwide, which shows that an Average Annual Survival Budget for a family of four is $62,472 in New York, just to get a basic living household income. The study also indicates 44% of households in New York State were either living below the poverty line or barely above it. Meanwhile, the Bronx, which is the poorest county in New York City shows that 71% of households were living below the poverty line or barely surpassed it. During the last segment of the show, Professor Wolff interviews Becky Bond and Zach Exley, Senior Advisers to the Bernie Sanders Campaign and Co-Authors of "Rules for Revolutionaries: How big Organizing Can Change Everything." #MNN #RichardWolff #EconomicUpdate #PowerToThePeople #CommunityEngagement.

As much of Washington prepared for the inauguration of President Donald Trump, I spent last week on a fact-finding mission in Syria and Lebanon to see and hear directly from the Syrian people. Their lives have been consumed by a horrific war that has killed hundreds of thousands of Syrians and forced millions to flee their homeland in search of peace. It is clear now more than ever: this regime change war does not serve America’s interest, and it certainly isn’t in the interest of the Syrian people. We met these children at a shelter in Aleppo, whose families fled the eastern part of the city. The only thing these kids want, the only thing everyone I came across wants, is peace. Many of these children have only known war. Their families want nothing more than to go home, and get back to the way things were before the war to overthrow the government started. This is all they want. I traveled throughout Damascus and Aleppo, listening to Syrians from different parts of the country. I met with displaced families from the eastern part of Aleppo, Raqqah, Zabadani, Latakia, and the outskirts of Damascus. I met Syrian opposition leaders who led protests in 2011, widows and children of men fighting for the government and widows of those fighting against the government. I met Lebanon’s newly-elected President Aoun and Prime Minister Hariri, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Elizabeth Richard, Syrian President Assad, Grand Mufti Hassoun, Archbishop Denys Antoine Chahda of Syrian Catholic Church of Aleppo, Muslim and Christian religious leaders, humanitarian workers, academics, college students, small business owners, and more. Their message to the American people was powerful and consistent: There is no difference between “moderate” rebels and al-Qaeda (al-Nusra) or ISIS - they are all the same. This is a war between terrorists under the command of groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda and the Syrian government. They cry out for the U.S. and other countries to stop supporting those who are destroying Syria and her people. I heard this message over and over again from those who have suffered and survived unspeakable horrors. They asked that I share their voice with the world; frustrated voices which have not been heard due to the false, one-sided biased reports pushing a narrative that supports this regime change war at the expense of Syrian lives. I heard testimony about how peaceful protests against the government that began in 2011 were quickly overtaken by Wahhabi jihadist groups like al-Qaeda (al-Nusra) who were funded and supported by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, the United States, and others. They exploited the peaceful protesters, occupied their communities, and killed and tortured Syrians who would not cooperate with them in their fight to overthrow the government. I met a Muslim girl from Zabadani who was kidnapped, beaten repeatedly, and raped in 2012, when she was just 14 years old, by “rebel groups” who were angry that her father, a sheep herder, would not give them his money. She watched in horror as masked men murdered her father in their living room, emptying their entire magazine of bullets into him. I met a boy who was kidnapped while walking down the street to buy bread for his family. He was tortured, waterboarded, electrocuted, placed on a cross and whipped, all because he refused to help the “rebels” - he told them he just wanted to go to school. This is how the “rebels” are treating the Syrian people who do not cooperate with them, or whose religion is not acceptable to them. Although opposed to the Assad government, the political opposition spoke strongly about their adamant rejection of the use of violence to bring about reforms. They argue that if the Wahhabi jihadists, fueled by foreign governments, are successful in overthrowing the Syrian state, it would destroy Syria and its long history of a secular, pluralist society where people of all religions have lived peacefully side by side. Although this political opposition continues to seek reforms, they are adamant that as long as foreign governments wage a proxy regime change war against Syria using jihadist terrorist groups, they will stand with the Syrian state as they work peacefully toward a stronger Syria for all Syrians. Originally, I had no intention of meeting with Assad, but when given the opportunity, I felt it was important to take it. I think we should be ready to meet with anyone if there’s a chance it can help bring about an end to this war, which is causing the Syrian people so much suffering. I return to Washington, DC with even greater resolve to end our illegal war to overthrow the Syrian government. From Iraq to Libya and now in Syria, the U.S. has waged wars of regime change, each resulting in unimaginable suffering, devastating loss of life, and the strengthening of groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS. I call upon Congress and the new Administration to answer the pleas of the Syrian people immediately and support the Stop Arming Terrorists Act. We must stop directly and indirectly supporting terrorists - directly by providing weapons, training and logistical support to rebel groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS; and indirectly through Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, and Turkey, who, in turn, support these terrorist groups. We must end our war to overthrow the Syrian government and focus our attention on defeating al-Qaeda and ISIS. The U.S. must stop supporting terrorists who are destroying Syria and her people. The U.S. and other countries fueling this war must stop immediately. We must allow the Syrian people to try to recover from this terrible war. Thank you, Tulsi

Hi Norman; The American government currently is not functioning well; nor will it anytime soon. It is Stupid, Cruel and unfortunately EVIL. These wars are EVIL and Mother Earth cannot afford such constant and pervasive EVIL. It is a human soul thing and we are eroding our collective souls with these inhumane actions. I know you say "religious nut", who does not believe in WAR as a state of being and declaration of my heart felt beliefs; so I must be flawed; Right?

I went to the store today for a friend. In 1993-98 I used to buy .22 lr ammo for $10 for 10 100 round boxes when it was on sale. It doesn't go on sale any more, but I bought 100 rounds of shorts today for $6. Six times what lr sold for 20 years ago. Wages are just about the same, but .22 ammo being dirt cheap is all over with. Wages, according to Paul Ryan, are going up.

interesting study that 44% of new yorkers don't have $500 in reserve for emergencies... a phone insurance executive used this united way study to point out on a business show, that "most people don't have $500 dollars to get a new phone" so their insurance on phone purchases has done very well... an example of how corporations use reports on how bad people have it to use it to their advantage and gouge you even more.

Thank you. Even though Bernie lost, what was pulled off with this experimental method was phenomenal. The parts that I could see (such as getting supporters in each state to report things that seemed irregular about the election as they occurred) were brilliant. I am looking forward to reading the book. It should present a model for future campaigns.

One thought on the left and a proposal for this amazing program.... Why do we maintain such an austere and modest posture in our aethetic appreciation when we live in a post capitalistic era where we could be celebrating the production and consumption system we have grown up and will continue to live in. Sometimes it feels as we live in the shadow of ideology where, just like in imposed austerity, we contain ourselves within a dogmatic framework or beliefs that is similar to religious dogma when materialism is about the ideas that make the objects we consume in the everyday of our lives. These "material" objects or things are the real representation of the system, we like it or not, we must put them foward, bring them into our radio shows and even debate them, this mean objectifying ideologies critically, socialism or not, capitalism or not... Capitalism i believe exists and persists with explotation and alienation becouse we un-critically accept the situation we live in, but with the condensation of the everyday (Henry Lefebre uses this term) in these material objects we live our lives with, may we be workers, students or even capitalists we can bring back the lost relationship between the object and the idea, which in the end is one of emancipation too...

I'm not convinced about the argument that just because productivity increases means employers should pay higher wages. advances in technology has helped employees to do their jobs quicker and more efficiently. For example, If an employee who once used a mop to clean floors now operates a mopping machine to do twice as much and in half the time should translate into double the wages? that doesn't seem right to me.

HEY--since when was there video for Rick Wolff's radio show? What's the source, please? edit: the median penalty for one trillion dollars in overcharging, was 21%? We now not just incentivize but fully subsidize corporate corruption. 9:30 -- did Rick just acknowledge that women did far better in terms of wages than men? This is indeed a new day. Or,... men are clearly so screwed that can no longer be ignored.

Thank you, very, very much. I am looking forward to watching more. Let us hope and pray that you guys can break the center left cycle of Democrats and provide us with a great candidate next election. I am registered non partisan and would gladly vote along which ever lines are better for this country. I did not vote for Trump. Nor did I vote for Hillary. Look this is petty but I have nothing to do at the moment. Did he not say: "the fine was 21% which means for every $5 that they over charged they paid 21 cents. " That starts at 7:15 and goes to about 7:39. He misstates the math.

The problem is that the capitalist system is inherently exploitive. Its based on the value..Reward is for the capital not work. Inequality across the world can only be removed by replacing this system with a system which values work. With this value we need to look at the purpose and meaning of human life. Since each one of usa self therefore we need to work on the concept of the hereafter... without accepting human self nothing will change..

Hi Roland; Bernie is still alive and he may not have been like so many others if he had of challenged the DNC, the Clintons and the voting fraud that was perpetrated against his campaign. These people are thugs and killers. They routinely kill thousands overseas in our perpetual and illegal, criminal wars. Yes Bernie failed us supporters. I voted for Jill Stein and campaigned against Hillary Clinton. I would not have been involved except for a couple weeks prior to the election to come up to stream on who I was going to vote for. It is not about processes. It is not about interest groups. Many different processes can be best in different circumstances. Communism is the only way that makes sense for streets. Every street privately owned and charging to use is a disaster. On the other hand communist jewelry makers is squally silly. Like wise every interest group out only for themselves is a recipe for a "crabs in a bucket" disaster as well. The key point is values applied in every case, of every process, for every interest group. That is the "Socialism" that Bernie advocated for and how all that I know of understood it. It is also the Socialism applied in Scandinavia. I have distilled the ideas of many down to four Basic Values that define the cultural divide and a spectrum where the middle is not the ideal and from which the entire Bernie based agenda can be derived . That post can be found here bit.ly/Basic_Values

What Richard doesn't realize is that technology is suppose to relieve human beings of labour and monotonous task. This allows people to be more creative, and contribute more production to arts, sciences, morality, culture, etc.. It's always boo hoo the proletariat. Hey proletariat, read a book and learn a real skill or science and stop listening to charlatans like Mr Wolff; who does nothing but benefit from capitalism. There's a reason Richard is a professor and public speaker and not a politician; as a politician he could actually do something and then be held accountable but as a professor he can to do less work, can take on less responsibility and make more money by teaching silly Marxist ideals. I would take Mr Wolff more seriously if he wasn't a wealthy capitalist preaching propaganda to the proletariat filling their ears with honey but never letting them know the fact that millions die every time the system he preaches about is adopted. How many millions of people have to die, and countries have to enslave their people to prove Marxism is a bad idea in practice.

Again, Wolf still doesn't get it and doesn't tell the whole truth. At about 12:00 Wolf goes into his usual rant about productivity going up but wages are not. Wolf doesn't explain why. Many other economist have said why and it is simply globalization and automation. If an American worker isn't producing more than those over seas then why pay him more? That is simple enough. Also, the workers over seas often have access to the same machines so they can be just as productive. Wolf does state why productivity has gone up. It is due to automation, company infrastructure and tools that the company provides. The company needs to get a return on investment for buy this equipment so more and more of the income earned is going to go to the automation that enabled the increase in productivity. Wolf suggests that more of the profits should go to the workers but why when the workers aren't adding to the profits? It is the machines that increase productivity but Wolf won't tell you that. If all the profits were to go to the workers then they wouldn't have anything to work with and their productivity would be close to 0. You may not like globalization and automation but they are here to stay. Adapt. Learn how to design, build or maintain the machines. The banks are a different issue. They shouldn't be allowed to play with other people's money. The banksters need to be criminally liable for their mistakes or better yet they should have 50% to 75% of their wealth tied up in the stock of the bank they are running so if they ruin their bank the banksters will personally lose big time. This may sound strange but most of the business in small businesses that are privately held and run. If these small business owner screw up they are ruined. I don't see why this shouldn't be the case for big companies. It makes me sick that the banksters that got bail outs with tax payer money got bonuses or golden parachutes. The banksters have no "skin in the game". If they lose they walk away with bonuses. "Socialism works until you run out of other people's money"

@pnachtwey 7 лет назад
@Sir Twinkeltoes, money is not a basic right, nor is health care. What are you going to do when there is NO government to enforce or provide what you think are your rights? They both come at the expense of other people's rights since the governments will hold guns to heads of others to give you what you think are your rights. Liberalism and those like Wolff are evil. They provide no solution except to take from others. My solution is increasing productivity of people. Austerity and borrowing are not going to work. This has been proven. The problem with my solution is that most people aren't productive enough or at all. BTW, we sell our "shit" internationally. There will be a market somewhere especially when it has a good return on investment.
