No for pure speed economy is absolutely faster, it is more "Economical" - Alternate just gives you a choppier sound and is easier to control rhythmically. The fastest pickers use economy picking - Yngwie Malmsteen, Shawn Lane... not that speed is important for good music.

You have to practice both hands individually then together, and push yourself! None of this SLOW shit. Yes, start slow, but don't do what everyone else does and stay there, build up speed by like five bpm, and make sure you watch both hands at all times while playing, to pick out flaws, and address them immediately, move the pick JUST past the strings, practice that alone too. Start at your head and all the way to your toes, relaxing each muscles every time you play. When playing ascending or descending licks like 3 note per string licks or something, always LIFT all fingers, never leave that index down as a crutch. Do not anchor your right hand either, keep it free flowing and relaxed, either with a clinched fist (not tight just enough to hold onto the pick) or fingers hanging loosely down. Learn the correct way to hold a pick for speed (plenty of vids). Just don't anchor anything like having your Pinky on the pick guard and pressing. It causes tension. Practice making all your fingers only lift up as much as they need to on your fretting hand, I had a problem with every finger except the index and middle, they would fly up between notes. It's a very hard thing to get past, especially when you start over after 14 years of playing and practicing wrong. Also with speed always keep your fretting hand thumb in the center or abouts on the back of fretboard. It will benefit you in the long run. Make sure every once in a while, even tho it will sound like shit, go all out, and try to play the licks at a speed you know you're not capable of right now. That way you get the feel for playing at that speed, I do it about 5 times every 20 minutes or so, during practice. Independent fingers are very beneficial too, which is part of not lifting your fingers too far off fretboard when lifting to change to a different string. Really focus on relaxing that Pinky and all other fingers, so they barely rise above the strings. My last advice as a player who started over, to someone I would like to see do it right, is make sure you change up your practice regime every day to keep from getting boring. If you have prioritized issues you want to work on, keep those in the regamine, but still rotate to different days. And make sure you are practicing the CORRECT things in order. Theory is like a book, that never ends, but it is in order nonetheless. You don't want to not know all the notes on the fretboard and start jumping into sheet music reading or crazy scales....learn your notes, then chords, then scales...ect. I hope this helped and isn't just a jumbled pile of scrap! Sorry it was so long. Enjoy, it's fun as hell once you start getting into the interesting stuff! Don't give up!

Thank you for going into the nuances of economy picking. Especially lightening up on the pick. It felt kind of funny at first, but it was huge for me. Helped me clean up, speed up and smooth out my lines. I had to practice my nuts off to get it up to speed TBH, but now that I've got it I've got it. And I really can't thank you enough. Sometimes (but rarely) I have been fortunate enough to get the right lesson from the right teacher at the right time and the benefits have been paradigm altering. This was that. People who throw shade might want to consider viewing a person's behaviour in its totality. But hey, they can spend their time manufacturing indignation and I will spend mine working on my technique, theory and jam tracks. Thanks man.

Hi Rob, This one only to tell you that this very lesson opened gates for my playing. It showed me how to employ things that I already could play, but use them in a different manner in point of view picking. Within one week I did a really huge step just doing the things you describe in quite an easy and comprehensible manner in this clip. I can only recommend to watch the clip a several times and in lumps and to reproduce the techniques just as described, using the very patterns to practice. It really worked for me. Many many thanks for that.

I bet that Martin sounds dreamy. Have they ever made a crap guitar? Even that little backpacker they did was brilliant. Just wish I had the cash to itch that rash :) I once used 13s on an acoustic then decided guitar was supposed to be fun not some sort of weird experiment into sadomasochism so I went back to 11s. I have 9s on my electric. I tried 8s years ago but it felt like playing Plasticine.

Hey Chappers, out of interest, what gauge are those strings, because I've found that with lighter strings are harder to play fast with, because the plectrum just moves them, and its hard to get an accurate run going? Alex :)

I love your work, man. I used to strictly alternate pick fast runs, but over time, I naturally began to do what is called economy picking. Call it laziness, as musicians are known for, I still say it just makes sense. You have some great tips here for overcoming the learning curve and developing the technique. And you have very impressive mastery of it. Liked, and will definitely share!

If I'm correct Gambale uses the same picking motion and definitely sounds more fluid but for pure speed strict alt. picking is probably better (Meola, Guilbert etc.)
@TheMetalHeaD256
@TheMetalHeaD256 11 лет назад
yeah maybe. i looked up the C-1 SGR. i didn't know it was a bolt-on until now. does the neck joint get in the way of your hand at all? i'd figure it would with how high on the fretboard he's going. i'd say that would be the sole problem. even if it doesn't, yeah, if i remember correctly, the lower-grade models' necks aren't as nice or thin as the higher ones.
@TheMetalHeaD256
@TheMetalHeaD256 11 лет назад
ah i didn't know they made Schecters without EX/J frets. it may be the frets, it may be the neck. my expansive-but-limited experience would say that it's the neck, but maybe the taller extra-jumbo's do make it quicker to hit the string. that being said it could also be difference in action or in bow of the necks.
@TheMetalHeaD256
@TheMetalHeaD256 11 лет назад
the frets themselves shouldn't make much difference. in fact i think larger frets might actually hinder you more. i would see you having difficulty if you have a Les Paul or a guitar with a shorter neck. (strats' bridge-to-nut length is 25.5". Les Pauls' are 24.75, and that makes the space between the frets smaller) what kind of guitar do you have?
@TheMetalHeaD256
@TheMetalHeaD256 11 лет назад
okay then that's really weird. i believe both the C1 and C1 Hellraiser have the same size frets and neck length. maybe the neck SHAPE isn't permitting your hand to be in the right place or something. but that's really odd. does one have a Floyd and the other have a hardtail, by chance?
@hawg427

Yep, my Martin HD-28 has 13's on it from the factory. No shredding or serious bending going on with that bad boy LOL. I had been using 10's then I went up to 11's and the only thing I noticed was that it took me a few times playing to adjust to the strings while doing bends.

There's something very pleasing about the sound of using the same shape on each string for those exercises... So when you are playing a 3 note per string scale using economy picking, do you use your arm for when you change string? Almost like a mini sweep?

I love Rob's videos and his playing, but I wouldn't advise using these sort of licks to much when your making music. It's important to outline the chords and not just play the scale shapes. A scale is just an alphabet, you don't need to let it tell you which note to play next. God I wish I had technique like this though haha.

Minor correction/clarification. At 0:49 you say Yngwie adds a 7th. It’s in fact a major 7, which is an essential distinction, since it makes it a harmonic minor, rather than aeolian, and gives it the classical/yngwie sound.

@Jokrono
@Jokrono 10 лет назад
The way I fixed this problem was to always practice with a metronome at half time, and I play so that each beat/tick was a downstroke and each off beat was an upstroke. Don't start this playing fast because you'll end up with some bad habits, but it works as a good starting point for economy picking.
@SkepticGamer
@SkepticGamer 8 лет назад
+jblack57 How is it even possible to learn to play with just down strokes?
@cdreid99999
@cdreid99999 7 лет назад
depends on the music. Theres NO REASON you cant just downstroke unless youre playing incredibly fast. And back in the day there was no youtube. Youd buy books. or more likely a book of tabs of a certain band and try to figure it out. Maybe you had a teacher and he learned the same way and gave you his bad habits. We are incredibly lucky and ill bet the existence of the internet quadrupled the number of guitarists
@philfyphil
@philfyphil 6 лет назад
+Skeptic Gamer You don't, you use a down stroke (or upstroke) when the movement dictates you can use it. In other words you play an odd number of notes coming off a string which moves you to the next. Economy picking is incredibly difficult to master quickly, particularly if you have been playing for years and always used alternate. It's one of those things you need to persevere and be patient with. You can think of a single one direction strum across all six strings as a series of single economy picks!

Love ya chappers...and I like the fact that you don't go too dreadfully slow for the more advanced guys(which I am not)...but please since you don't go slow and aren't completely clear which notes on which string you are hitting....please use a guitar with more than 1 fret marker. it gets kinda confusing trying to count frets especially in the upper register where they are close together. other than that keep up the great videos!!

he Always uses that godawful muddy distortion. and he picks fast i think to show off. Check out justinguitar etc. Anyone who's really trying to teach you isnt using fast fingerings you cant see and distortions to hide wtfever note or chord theyre playing
