Thanks for this video. Made the job quick. People like you make RU-vid what it's become over the years. Some shit we can use to make money and save money
Great reference video! This afternoon I replaced the plugs in my ‘08 2.4 Malibu and discovered oil in plug socket (2nd from right); there’s no other leaks. I guess it makes sense to change the plug seals, head gasket, and bolt (rubber) washers together, so I don’t get any more misfire codes from the wet plug...
Valve cover and head are completely different parts of the engine on an inline engine, there is one valve cover, and one head. This video is about the valve cover gasket. *Arrangement from top to bottom: Valve cover, head, block.* The valves and their mechanisms reside under the valve cover, partially within the head. Spark plugs sit in the head, but can usually be removed without the removal of the head or valve cover. The valve cover gasket goes between the valve cover and the head. Head gasket goes between the head and the block. In a V-shaped engine there are usually 2 heads and 2 valve covers. Same with horizontally opposed engines (AKA flat engines) such as in Subarus and Porsches.
Most crucial part is torque it down to 89 inch pounds. Just found out that previous owner broke a bolt off in head.. 2 hours later i finally got it out
"Grommets", the rubber for the bolts. I've subbed , thanks for the vid on the belt. I was fighting and fighting for an hour, not thinking that taking out the airbox would give enough room. To me it looked like the mount had to come off.
How many grommets? I’ve got a coworker wanting me to do the valve cover on his. I’m also wondering are the bolts that hold down the valve cover different than the spark plug bolts
Is that equivalent to 8ft.-lbs. I googled and got a Chevy document saying 8ft.-lbs. Also, my mechanic said "tight is tight with these. Don't snap 'em off but you can hand tighten" I did, it's fine.
on the 2.4 is there a cooling tube associated with the valve cover? Sources say that it rots out and has to be replaced? or is that only for the v6 engines. 2009 g6
What are the actuators attached to? I noticed they didn’t come off with the valve cover. Trying to replace whatever they are attached to because the bolt to my intake actuator broke off inside due to being over torqued. Ty
at 2:30, I think im missing those 13mm bolts...I just see holes...What are those for? Should i look to buy and install those bolts....I"m having misfire issues on the 4th cylinder and the next thing I'm looking to do is replace the valve cover gasket....lil oil in a different cylinder so im sure its needed. Great video btw
hi, my 2.4L ecotec has leaked between valve cover and oil filler tube but I have no idea how to take filler tube off. Does it required to open the valve cover to brings it out?
Thanks doing maintance on my moms car and found the spark plugs drowning in oil this will make it easy to fix. Just trying to decide if i want to do timing chain it has about 170k miles honestly didnt hink about it to you removed cover and i saw top of the gears for timing chain. anyone have a idea when a chevy malibu timing chain should be replaced?
I have a 2009 Chevy Malibu Ltz 2.4l ecotec. Identical to yours. Do you know if it has a pcv valve. And if so. My issue is it makes a squealing noise, but stops when I remove the oil dip stick. I did do some research, but I can't find the pcv location. Can you help?
Hey there, about to take on this job. I know this video was posted a long time ago but do you remember where you got the rubber grommets? GM Part No 12587285 is the whole bolt assembly with the grommets attached but the dealership wants $13 for each bolt. It would be much cheaper to just replace the rubber like you did. Let me know if you can. Thanks!
I just changed my 2008 Saturn's 2.4 Ecotec spark plugs. Upon doing so, I noticed some puddling of oil in the spark plug boot area. After researching online, it appears that this is due to a gasket issue. I was first thinking it was oil rings or other issues (engine purrs and no blue smoke from exhaust). So, I have not done the valve cover change but hope it solves the issue.
@@stevensmith8364 Do you have a 2008 Saturn Vue? Also, the elbow fitting to the Air Inlet duct for the PCV is ripped and not sure of the best method of repair for that. Any suggestions? Thanks!
My 08 malibu has oil in the sparkplugs do I do this? I noticed tge oil in my spark plugs when i went to go change them I was trying to change them since i have t when i bought it
Very good for future reference! I'm just curious, why did you change the valve cover gasket? Was it just routine maintenance or were you having some issues going on?
Thanks man! I changed the gasket because it was leaking slightly, mostly on the side of the engine near the exhaust manifold. Soon I will have a video where I change the front control arms.
@Lehew Tech yo! 4 years later lmao... been running into more and more leaks as my malibu gets older, just did a crankshaft seal and then valve cover decided to start leaking in probably the exact spot yours did. Dripping onto the exhaust manifold causing a burning smell. Thanks for the video man, I'll need it in a little while
I have a 09 malibu 2.4 and I recently pulled the engine cover/intake and noticed there's lot of oil in the hose and in the actually intake. And the car seems to run poorly
Sorry I am a mechanical idiot so I might be asking a stupid question but here goes: do you HAVE to wash it or can you just go ahead and change it without washing the engine? Thanks in advance!
