Live performance of my Ecstatic Waters, for wind ensemble + electronics, by the extraordinary United States Marine Band "The President's Own" under the direction of Col. Michael J. Colburn. This is one of the very best performances of it I've ever heard (and I've heard a lot of good ones).

As a tuba player myself, I have to say Movement IV is one of the most exhilerating and fun pieces I have ever had the pleasure of performing. Great composition.

I heard this last week preformed by the Minnesota Orchestra with Eric Whitacre conducting and Steven Bryant controlling the electronic parts. I was absolutely amazed by it. This is possibly the best piece I've ever heard

My school's Wind Ensemble is taking this piece to the National Music Festival this year. I have to say, when I heard them rehearsing Movement IV I about fell over in shock. 17:59 is by far my favorite part out of this entire suite. When the W.I. rehearsed it, the sound shook the walls and you could here them playing from the other side of our (fair sized) high school. I highly recommend listening to this, you won't regret it!

What I can remember most from the USC Wind Ensemble's performance of this piece was not being able to comprehend my own thoughts from how loud the end of the third movement was. A moment I will never forget, ironically.

Steven Bryant - Thanks very much for the kind words about this performance. I just stumbled across this RU-vid recording when doing some research for the History/Lit of the Wind Ensemble course I teach at Butler, and I had no idea that you were so pleased with our efforts. I certainly have fond memories of the performance, and was so happy you could be there for it. - Mike Colburn

For context I’m a Bass Trombone player. When I first played this piece it was spring of 21. I was in the Wind Ensemble of my Junior College with with 6 other trombones 5 tenors and 2 basses (not saying everyone does this but please don’t believe in the stigma that Junior College bands can’t play music like this or that they’re not real colleges) and man this was unlike anything I’d played or heard before. When we started rehearsing this piece I was just so unbelievably bored because of all the empty space of silence we had because we didn’t start with the electronic patches. But once we started putting the electronics in that changed the atmosphere and vibe when we rehearsed this piece. And to add insult to injury, we were using our marching band speakers so it was crazy. And I remember when it got to around the 11:30 marker and the big bass impact I was in shock because this whole section made my chest vibrate. Still my favorite move of this piece is Mvt IV. Specifically the 16:41 - 19:02 maker. That big full band impact with the tension and release to where it finally resolves. Man. Every time I talk about when I played this piece I just remember how much fun this was. I haven’t gotten the chance to play again but would so love to as it is one of my favorite pieces of all. So thank you Mr. Bryant, for composing a very unique yet beautiful and fun piece.

When I went to festival of winds last year here in florida mr Bryant and his wife were conductors for the bands. This piece was performed by the USF band and it was just so amazing to hear it in person and having mr.bryant helping on the electronics was awesome.

I had the privilege of performing this composition while under the direction of Prof. (Col.) Colburn. Being wired up to the mic during the clarinet solo... I’ll never forget those rehearsals or performance ☺️ (Just to clarify, I’m not the clarinetist in this recording. We (as a University Wind Ensemble) were directed by Prof. Colburn 🥰)

Mr. Bryant, this has to be my new favorite among symphonic pieces. It captivates a sort of beauty and darkness all at the same time. I have to thank my band director for showing this to me, and thank you for writing this amazing piece! Keep it up and come to JMU in Harrisonburg sometime!

This is one of my favorite pieces of all time. I had the pleasure of playing this at ULL two years ago. My favorite movements are Movements I and IV but just the whole transition from and explosion of light and color into beautiful darkness is phenomenal. Thank you for writing this piece.

Steven Bryant I've actually changed my mind about it. I'm a cellist and I played the orchestral version of it at Governor's School and sort of fell in love with it. I was very annoyed at first that I had to play something so different, but I think it's given me a new perspective on music in general. Also wow, I didn't expect my little comment to get a reply directly from you.
