If you're concerned about ectopic pregnancy or have been diagnosed with one, this video is for you. Ectopic pregnancies can be a scary and confusing experience. I'm Dr Lora Shahine, and I've helped many people navigate ectopic pregnancies.
In this video, you'll learn:
• What exactly an ectopic pregnancy is
• How common ectopic pregnancies are
• Risk factors that can increase your chances of having one
• How ectopic pregnancies are diagnosed (and why it can sometimes be tricky)
• Treatment options, including both medical and surgical approaches
• An important message about ectopic pregnancies and your mental health
I understand this can be a difficult and emotional topic. Remember, an ectopic pregnancy is not your fault, and it doesn't mean you won't be able to have a healthy pregnancy in the future.

Thank you for the video! I recently found out I have an ectopic pregnancy and received medication for it. Thankfully, my fertility team monitored me closely since my IUI treatment and warned me about the risk early on, so the ectopic was caught when the tissue was still small. I've been going over what I may have done wrong, but hearing you say it's not my fault is really comforting. I love all your other videos too!

I feel the same way you do, especially since I heard that 'it's not your fault.' But we are expected, moms; we are getting stronger from this! I hope you recover soon!

I'd love to learn more about how IVF embryos end up becoming ectopic. We're often told that once the embryo is in there, it becomes like a sesame seed stuck in a peanut butter sandwich. That comparison is used to teach patients that it's okay to move around after transfer and that the embryo can't go anywhere. But clearly ectopic pregnancies exist after IVF so that narrative doesn't make sense either. Also, I ended up in urgent care a few weeks after my third transfer with abdominal pain on the side and the doctor almost ruled out ectopic based on the fact that it was an IVF pregnancy. I had to be the one to explain to an actual medical provider that IVF isn't a safeguard against ectopics. Also, could it be possible that people with endometriosis are more likely to experience an ectopic pregnancy because the endometrial tissue outside the uterus is more receptive to an embryo than non-endometrial extrauterine tissue?

Thank you Dr. Shahine for the very informative video. I had an ectopic pregnancy a few years ago where the embryo had implanted in the fallopian tube. I had no idea I was pregnant as I had had a light period too. I was surprised at the light period but because I had just started some medications, I attributed the light period to that. Only after fainting a couple of times and having abdominal pain did I find out I had an ectopic pregnancy and that I needed immediate surgery as the fallopian tube had ruptured and was slowly dripping blood. Along with abdominal pain, another pain women should watch out for is pain in the bum when you sit. I am grateful to the doctors who quickly did the laparoscopic surgery and saved my life. Thank you to all doctors like you, Dr. Shahine ❤

This just happened to me two days ago and I’m really struggling mentally to cope with the loss. Wednesday was supposed to be a great day and it turned out to be a nightmare. I was 7 weeks and my husband and I were excited to go get out first ultrasound appointment but boy were we in for a scare. Not only was I rushed to surgery but she couldn’t save my tube. I’m trying to heal from the surgery but the mental healing is worse for me than the physical. We really wanted this baby and I’m just feeling super discouraged and depressed. I only have one tube now and I guess we have to pray hope and wish that that tube will be good enough to conceive again. I’m just filled with so much anger because I knew something was wrong I contacted the doctor 9 days before the surgery and was told cramps are normal go rest. Just can’t help but wonder if I wasn’t dismissed could a less abrasive approach have been taken. I just hope we can have another baby. This was a huge setback for my family.

Hi thank you for this video. I had an ectopic pregnancy last year and needed surgery. I didn't have any risk factors, but I was wondering if luteal phase defect has been tied to ectopic pregnancy? Thanks!

Doctor, will you please talk about subchorionic hematomas and hemorrhage especially related to recurrent pregnancy loss and what can be done about it? I've had 4 early miscarriages in 2 years and the last two involved these hemorrhages. Now I'm turning to IVF and looking at becoming one of your patients if my local clinic in Portland doesn't seem to know much about recurrent loss. I love your book.

Very informative understanding of the ectopic condition.. I was diagnosed with the stable ectopic pregnancy, outside the tubes and was treated with methotrexate.. now after 6 months I am going to start with my treatment again.. but I am confused whether to go for IUI or IVF … which of these do you recommend will have less risk of turning into another ectopic.. I am a foreigner living in Korea, so it’s difficult to discuss with doctors here as they are less likely to speak in English….pls advise

I am so sorry for your loss Neither treatment will eliminate risk of ectopic pregnancy but many people have success with IVF if they have tubal disease - ask your doctor about your personal situation ❤️

I am doing IVF currently getting ready for my 2nd transfer. I have blocked tubes, HSG dye would not go through them at all. Could I still be at risk for having an ectopic pregnancy?

Thank you! I am experiencing my fourth loss from a cornual ectopic pregnancy. Due to its rarity, my doctors have been conflicted about treatment. So far, methotrexate seems to be working. Surgery is definitely not ideal for future fertility with uterine resection.

Hard to concentrate with the weird sound of the mic, the jenga and the extra media added in. No need. Good info but the extra video clips are distracting.
