Thats what made the show so so good was the utter absurdity of it all but there was always a glimmer of self awareness of how the heck did that happen?!
Believe it or not, this show was a bet from a friend of Danny, the creator, that he couldn't create a kid friendly cartoon that'll last more than one season. Safe to say he won the bet hands down.
10:45 One: Ed's entirely blank expression in tandem with the total silence kills me every time I watch this scene. Two: The fact that EVERYONE stopped what they were doing and looked at Ed looking very worried implies that either they were genuinely concerned if he was hurt, or that they were terrified of Ed potentially going berserk.

I don't think Ed has that sort of attacking on command character, he's not a bully. He's simple, mischievous at time but not immoral or heartless. He's simple in the sense that it doesn't take much to make him happy. He lives in the moment naturally. He's the sort who's quick to forgive and forget. He shrugs off the worst abuses his little sister puts him through and loves her anyways.
Eddy: Gotcha! Prepare to scarf the- Ed: (smacks Eddy's hand really hard with plank, knocking the broccoli into the air) Eddy: YEOUCH!!!!!!! That hurt, Ed! Ed: Gee Eddy, I'm sorry.
