My Father, Charles Stanyan, had a Cocktail Party at the Lab in the early 60s. We were close friends of Bruce and Jean Aris as Bruce used to render drawings for my father for use in early Monterey KMBY TV Commercials. I used to hangout with Bruce while he was working his Artistic Magic. I also used to hangout with Hank Ketchum at his Studio, which was around the corner from my house, in the early 50s. Tiny Colletto was my best friend, Mike Colletto´s Uncle who was a hand on the Western Flyer. I heard some amazing stories about some wild things that went on during the Sea of Cortez Expedition. I have lived on the Sea of Cortez in La Paz for the past 21 years. When you are born at Carmel by the Sea Hospital, you will always live close to the Sea !
As a Chicagoan I wholeheartedly accept the idea that Ricketts picked up his early academic vision for life-as-community here in the City of Big Shoulders. ❤
Just discovered this excellent tour. Big fan of Steinbeck and Ricketts. I always wanted to see the inside of the building -- now, thanks to you, I have! Much appreciated.
Teleology is more about the study of origins as opposed to endings, isn't it? And as far as I can tell, all the deep philosophy in "Sea of Cortez" comes from Ed Ricketts. Steinbeck handled flow and narrative. I made a box from cast-off wood from the original "Western Flyer", while under reconstruction, for my 1941 copy of "Sea of Cortez".
If you just want to see the inside of the lab, skip to about 19 minutes in. I'm not sure what "tour" of the inside of a lab makes you wait 19 minutes to see any meaningful part of the inside of the lab. It's called narrating. We don't need to watch a lady in a mask standing in the same two places for nearly twenty minutes. I do appreciate the information. But lectures and tours are two different things and should be labeled accordingly.
Why the need to where a mask while making your video? So very unnecessary and WOKE given what we now know about the omicron variant and current vaccine. Great content but the mask here is very annoying to me.
Your timing is wrong. This video was recorded in 2020, before Omicron was a thing, and right when masking up was helping slow the spread of Covid-19, which was a brand new global pandemic.
I hate to be at all rude or aggressive, & apologise in advance, as I can easily see & hear the wonderful passion for everything’Steinbeck’,..but, the USA is rather obviously not Japan, Korea, or Taiwan. The muffling of a voice is very trying to Western ears. And, what is not often considered, if that English as it’s spoken contains f a r more consonants and F A R fewer vowels ending off most words. English is particularly poorly suited to masking.
