32 years ago, my parents brought me forth on this World a new boy (me), conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition, that all cows should be hugged and get scratches behind the ears.🐮🤗

Very informative video, thank you, Julia. Cows can be unpredictable. x

Yep, me too! Exactly the same happened to us, about 15 young bullocks mikes away at the far end of the field but they took one look at us and all came running over and were all very aggressive and up till that point, I was never worried about cows either. You are braver than me walking through that heard of cows, never seen so many in a field before and that bloody bull was something else! Cheers Alan

I love reading these stories from others. It’s sort of nice to know that lots of others have a similar experience. That huge field of cows went on forever, and so did my ramblings! 😂 thanks for taking the time to comment Alan. Xx

Brave and stupid are very different things. She was very lucky that was a calm bull and not an aggressive one or the outcome would have been very different. She was far from brave, she was very stupid and very lucky.

Walkers don't seem to understand livestock are used to seeing people who bring them food. They come over to see if you have a bucket of some kind of food for them, or a bail of hay. That's all they want they won't charge you.

Agreed - I think the key is to not panic. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I think you hare some really good advice there. The great majority of cows will never harm you. But they can be quite inquisituve. Perhaps you are the most interestimg thing that has happend that day and they will start following you. And therefore you should never run. They will follow you and see what you do 😄 Be big and look confident, and speak whatever you want - nonsense if you like 😂 So they will hear a normal non-agressive voice. I have a few times had bullocks gathering before a stile/gate. But when I approach them confidently but non agressive, the herd dissolves and I am free to go through the stile/gate. Of course it is necessary to be caucious sometimes. And especially when there are mothers and calves. And once we entered a field, Dennis Head just north of Gillan Estuary. And there was a big herd of cows and a big bull eyeballing us as we entered. So we dropped walking through, and just droppet the walk around this small headland - just in case.. 🙂 Better safe than sorry. But normally I believe it is safe to walk amongst cows if you just use some common sense. They are big though, and they are not aware of their size so I once had to jump into gorse and fern to let them pass. Great that you have been abke to work on, and let go of your phobia 😊👍

I like this video, I remember when I did the pennine way I went into fields where there was cows and bulls and providing I kept to the edge and did catch the eye of the bull it was fine, then in one field it was a small L shaped field with hedges either side I was just walking through as normal until I got to the bend and then the sky went dark, 20 yards away was a bull, a massive white one I froze for a while then carefully and slowly walked around him down the edge of the field to the gate the other side as I met a walker coming the other way he said he wouldn’t do that I’m going on the road. I never took my eye off the bull and I always give respect to the animals but all animals can be unpredictable. I think you were brave to go into a field when you was scared and to do it on your own is fantastic. Well done.

What a story - I was visualising the situation as I was reading it. Well done you. It's tough not to panic, but it's the only way to stay safe. I think cows are very intimidating creatures, but if we want to enjoy the outdoors then it's essential to learn how to deal with these situations. On the South Downs Way I had a situation where the fog was so bad that you couldn't see more than a metre in front of you, and then I saw the sign "bull in field" - that was probably the scariest field crossing I have ever done (with fresh massive cow pats on the floor - but I never saw a thing!).

Are they supposed to put bulls near public footpaths, I’m never sure. Most farmers are very very reasonable (and terrified of potential litigation I suspect) … you do get the odd awkward farmer, just as you get the odd awkward hiker, and over the past couple of years that balance may have tipped I suspect

I have also had many scary run ins with cows, touch wood no injuries as yet. Twice I've been charged at by entire herds - nothing will stop that being scary and it lives with me on every walk. My admiration for you walking through that field with the millions in - your vocalised internal monologue was pretty much identical to mine. I do feel talking to them helps calm them - maybe if you don't sound threatening they are reassured.

Well done Julia, braver than me. I had an experience once to. I have also spoke to a farmer once, asked him is it safe to walk through a field. He said to me not really. Wtf 😩. Making louds noises and shouting is good to know. Great video 👍

That’s bloody scary to think that a farmer thinks it’s ok to have dangerous livestock on a public footpath! Thanks for the comments. 🍻

yeah, make loud noises and shout to make them more excited. Yep, great advice that.

Hi Julia. I'm terrified of cows. I'm in a fishing club with lots of stretches of river available. I only fish one though as it grows crops in the field near the river. The other stretches have cows in the field and I avoid them. I've read so much about cows and seen the videos but I'm still very wary. Their big and look like they could do some damage.

Another good video. I also look where the feeding troughs are, sometimes when you enter a field they think it’s feeding time and head for the troughs, hopefully the feeding trough is in the middle of the field and not near the gate or style 😃. I’m always assertive around them but being cautious of any animal is never a bad thing 😀
@TheAdventureGeek
@TheAdventureGeek 2 года назад
That's a great tip! I always look to see how fresh the cow pats are as well - sometimes you can't see the cows, but the cow pats are fresh which means they may be just over the hill! Thanks for the comments Helen, it's appreciated.

@@TheAdventureGeek I’m so impressed you are going for the PCT, I would love to do part of it, but on the animal theme I am terrified of bears🤣
@TheAdventureGeek
@TheAdventureGeek 2 года назад
@@helenreeves6978 For me, it's snakes rather than bears. I've decided to break it into two chunks. So doing Campo to Kennedy Meadows in April 2023 (about 800 miles), then finishing the rest of it in 2024. Hopefully, I will see limited bears on the first section, but I know I will see snakes. Scary things!
@BravestoneHikes
@BravestoneHikes 2 года назад
I never really realized how intimidating cows could be when you have to get past them. Your technique of being big and loud, do not run, and wave your poles works for bears as well. Snakes are a totally different beast all together. Great video, Julia
@TheAdventureGeek
@TheAdventureGeek 2 года назад
If you have any snake tips then please let me know. That one is going to be very tough for me - we never really see them in the UK but on the PCT it will be a different story I'm sure.
