Excellent video. I've been very wary of cattle for a long time now. They just look so big and could do some damage if they really wanted to. This is the best video I've seen about walking through fields with cows. Thanks for this.

Wish I had seen this video before today ! Cows came running over towards us and I thought I was going to die and ran for the exit. I feel so silly now. Thank you for a very informative video.

I remember my friend crashed the banger down the farm lane. By the time we got out and look at the gate and damage there were 40 cow heads all peering over a low spot in the hedge behind us to see who’s made all the noise

You’re welcome, thanks for your kind comment! Sorry to hear you were charged at, that’s scary. Without knowing the context, they may have been curious in you and just followed you as you ran, they often do that!

Really great video. As a long distance trail runner I often encounter cows. My instinct is to always run away from them but this just seems to make them more curious and so they'll follow. The next time I encounter a herd I'll take your advice; slow down, stay calm, stay quiet and gently move across their field.

Great video mate , you should create more if you can . 👍👍 . Yesterday we went for a walk with my family and our dog in a mountainous setting , it was our first encounter with an adult cow, the mother and calf was far away however we were a bit cautious and i was also afraid to let my dog loose as its his first time seeing a cow

Never thought I'd search up a video about cow safety but a recent 'hit' by an aggressive one convinced me otherwise. Mind you I have encountered many cows on roads- common in my part of India. but most are usually passive. This particular one had its eyes set on me and tracked my path as I tried to walk away from him. I never imagined a cows strength before and I dont have to, not anymore. What I thought was a slow whipping of his neck sent me stumbling a few metres back and layed me out on the roadside. Since that incident every cow seems to eye me different. I try to not be bothered, I walk confidently past them without eye contact and follow it with a mush mush if they get too close, but another recently attempted a goring motion and I'm afraid I'm just counting down the days until the next accident. I'm not particularly tall or intimidating I won't last long if the cows have another go at me- I'm nimble on my legs and have a good shout in me. Am I doomed to run from them forever? Help!
@BeefFedFarmer
@BeefFedFarmer 2 года назад
Yes a playful one will move back if you shout or wave your arms towards it. An aggressive one will keep trying to headbutt! Try to scare it away... and run if all else fails!

I sometimes walk a public footpath that cuts through a farm. The farmer had positioned a Cow and her Calf on the footpath (probably 12 feet wide, 100 feet long). I don't know why he did this as it seemed potentially dangerous. Anyone have any thoughts why he did this?
@BeefFedFarmer
@BeefFedFarmer 3 года назад
He most likely moved them temporarily. Could be to isolate the cow or calf and give treatment, or to move other cattle around without them in the way, or perhaps the calf got out and the cow jumped a fence to be with it! Could be many reasons.

I almost got ran over by a cow today lol was minding my own business and this cow and his companion saw me and followed me.... and they went faster and faster, i said keep calm, but then he sprang with his head and made a noise like he wanted play or something, i said f that hahaha

1, walk with a big stick (helps to maintain distance, since you can point with it) 2, search for the leader of the group and get him on your side 3, NEVER but then again NEVER point, shout, run, walk, or even look at the new calves. Leave those absolutely alone. 4, carry some apples in your pocket. they love that and will run after them when you throw them in the opposite direction (but then immediately come back to ask for more xD) 5, enjoy. andeuhm . . .good luck !!!
@liesmies6280
@liesmies6280 2 года назад
6. you can also try leaving a fart. cows are disgusted by that.

I don't see this as good advice, a few people have been killed recently doing just as shown, I was brought up on a farm, my grandad spent years with animals and managed to avoid any injury, he told me to follow the steps you have explained, I did in one field I had crossed many times, one animal put his head down and rushed me, had I not ran and dived under the fence, I would have been another casualty in the countryside, they are unpredictable, take nothing for granted, they can and do kill people, even farmers, the only safe animal on a farm is behind a fence, even then I have seem a cow get over a 5ft wall when it wants to.
@BeefFedFarmer
@BeefFedFarmer 3 года назад
Unfortunately there's always going to be a risk. Despite being 'prey' animals. cows are large, powerful and have a herd instinct. You did the right thing in your situation - following the same precautions and actions I described in the video.

It is good advice, your granddad saying the same. Of course it doesn't stop the cows IF they go after you, but even still, there's a world's difference between a young and a bit overly-confident cow "playing" and actually being trampled to death. They don't just "kill" people, it's extremely unfortunate events coming together for it to end with serious injury or death. To this day, I'm still 100% more concerned about land owners who let big dogs run free on land with public access, these dogs don't understand that you're allowed to be there and come out of nowhere to attack you as an intruder. And un-like cows, there is no fence or anything that'll stop them. I had this happen to me a few times now, exclusively on footpaths that aren't used much ("Oh sorry, I didn't expect anyone to come through here, haha") A dog knows his owner isn't near and will use you as a welcome excitement to his otherwise boring life and test his protective/fighting skills on you. Cows don't have these instincts. So whenever they get "aggressive", unlike dogs, it's fear/defense, as of now, with all my cow encounters I was able to easily pick up "bad vibes" early enough to move a different way and defuse the situation. If you think this isn't good advise, what's yours then? Never use a public footpath again?
@razziel002

@@computername We all have opinions, I stated mine, my grandad was old school, he would go into the stables with a mad racehorse, it rolled its eyes, snorted, kicked but he went in and fed and changed the bedding without flinching, they did get a goat to keep it company, until the horse attacked it and nearly killed it, he never seem to worry about anything, I followed his lead and as I stated crossed this field many times, the animals I thought I could read and understand, turned out to be unpredictable, I was lucky and quick. I would never trust any farm animals now, should I need to cross a field with animals in I would not, I would either use the next field (if animal free) or walk around another way, I have seen the quietest dog snap, the best horse anyone can ride rear up, animals are unpredictable, so that's what I do to avoid them, feel free to do whatever you want, I still don't think its "good" advice, especially to someone who reads it and walks into a field thinking they are prepared
@kirkstmoritz4762
@kirkstmoritz4762 2 года назад
Thanks glad I'm not the only one, whilst this advice might work in most citations, it can't be relied upon, like you say they are unpredictable, when I was a teenager, I was going fishing, I walked through a field, one of them put there head down, tail up and charged, it's terrifying how fast they can run when angry, much faster than I could run, I could see others getting worked up also, ended up dropping fishing gear throwing myself into river to get away from em, I will usually divert if I come across them now, but if I have to ,I make sure there is a safe place to get to if needed

Oh my where to start there are some factual information mixed with things that are simply not true. For example, dogs in a field of cattle until the cattle are familiar with that particular dog. It’s a predator prey response, especially with the dairy cattle that are not used to having a dog around they can they frighten quite easily because in the wild of the wolves and coyote thing Takes place and cows are wary of animals like that initially they view the dog as a predator so when the young man says it’s the same without that is simply not true. I’ve had 40 years experience working with cattle, especially cattle and dogs occasionally and it happens every time he did say a few things factually correct Except when it comes to dogs and people not true, thank you
