Making an EDC Everyday Carry Tray from Eastern Red Cedar. In this video, I show you how I made an EDC (Everyday Carry) Tray on my Onefinity CNC machine. I used the CNC machine to recess a pocket in the bottom of the EDC tray to incorporate a piece of vegetable tanned leather to line the bottom of the everyday carry tray.

► LEATHER SUPPLIERS
Wickett & Craig - I typically order their "Tooling/Holster/Carving" vegetable tanned leather. I purchase their "Standard" grade, and I request that they split it down from a thicker hide so the back is as clean as possible. I normally order 7-8 ounce for holsters, 3-4 ounce if I'm lining a holster (I build the whole thing out of 3-4 ounce), and either 3-4 or 4-5 ounce for wallets, journal covers, etc... They will allow you to purchase individual hides
Herman Oak - While I love the leather I've gotten from Wickett & Craig, I prefer the warmer coloring of natural Herman Oak. Unfortunately, H.O. requires you to buy leather in bulk from the tannery, and buying from distributors can be hit & miss. Springfield Leather sells "Herman Oak Premium Belt Bend", so I’ve been using this lately.
The Leather Guy - I don't have a lot of experience with this leather, but the "Artisan's Choice" leather I've used has been very nice. The coloration is similar to Wickett & Craig. The thing I really like about The Leather Guy's website is that nearly every single hide shown on their site is a listing for the actual hide you'll be buying, complete with photos and a description of blemishes for that particular hide. Very cool that they do that!
District Leather - I've never personally ordered from them, but I've heard good things about their leather.
Acadia Leather - I've never purchased from here either, but I've also heard good things about their leather.
Horween Leather - At the risk of sounding repetitive, here's another I've never ordered from, but their leather is very well known.
Weaver Leathercraft - Most of what I order from weaver is buckles and tools, but they also sell leather.

Awesome project! I always loved watching your leatherwork but I'm actually quite a fan of CNC work as well :D Glad you're able to make more time for your family and other hobbies, I can't wait to see more of your work!

Thank you! Glad to know there’s other CNC fans in my subscriber base. I see this one has already cost me a few subscribers, but hopefully it’ll find its way outside the leather community. Thanks for watching and commenting, and for the support!

@@AdamsLeatherWorks very encouraging wife! But shes right. nice work. Do you have any knife that is in need of a custom sheath? Would be great if you can share how you would go about it especially making the pattern. Take care

Such a cool tray. I have a 1F and have done a few trays with the bowl bit but I love how this one angles in on the inside and outside. Can’t wrap my head around the way to do that on the computer though. All of mine so far are just 90° from the surface with the radius in the bottom from the bit. Awesome job!

Just a tip-with the antique gel, use a resist before applying, and when you buff the antique off, it will remain in the crevices, and not sink in everywhere else. You didn't apply resist, so the antique just sank into the leather
@AdamsLeatherWorks
@AdamsLeatherWorks 8 месяцев назад
Thanks, good tip! But I actually did want the darker leather with this one. I usually dye with Fiebings Pro dyes, and resist with Tan Kote before antiquing. This gel stain is a while lot easier for something like this.
@jasonharp5438
@jasonharp5438 2 года назад
Great Video! Love the Bowl! You should try rubbing some Fiebings Pro Resist on your leather before rubbing the Antique Gel, that way the Antique only stays in the crevices. 👊👊👊

Thanks Jason - good idea with the resist! I'll have to give that a try. I hadn't considered leaving the insert natural, but that would have complimented the lighter tones in the cedar nicely.

Beautiful finished product. I Love the colour & grain of the red cedar, I must try to get some, it's not available everywhere in UK, specialist suppliers. I'm also very impressed at the cutting capability of your CNC, I can only dream of 1/4" depth of cut while doing 1-2mm. Definitely a new subscriber,

I make a lot of food use wood things so I make my own finish with bee's wax and mineral oil. I keep it in a small crock pot to heat it so I can apply it hot. You can adjust the wax to oil ratio to get the finish you want.
@AdamsLeatherWorks

Thanks James - good tip! I do a similar thing for my leather stuff, but I use neatsfoot oil instead of mineral oil.

A current fashion born in Japanese gold repairs of ceramic masterpieces is to make a feature of such checking, by filling it with a contrasting colour resin. This is very common in kitchen fittings, and to reinforce burrs.

That would have been fun to try. I wasn't confident I could sand the interior very well with my current tools, so I took the 'easy' way out. Maybe I need to add a curved scraper to my arsenal. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Excellent work. If you're looking for a higher wax content give Walrus Oil a look. Great company and an even better product.

@@AdamsLeatherWorks im sure you don;t remember me but years ago i had broke my back and was trying anything to do to try to keep my life going, i got some leather and was messing around with it when i ran across your videos, i downloaded some of your patterns and started making holsters, I ask you a thousand questions and you always took the time to answer every one of them, i eventually started Crystal Bear Leatherworks, you helped me make it through the hardest spot in my life I had ever dealt with, let me take a second to thank you

Mike - I'm humbled and honored by your comment. I have gotten embarrassingly bad lately at responding to emails, but I'm glad I was able to respond to yours when you needed help the most. It's comments like yours that get me excited about focusing more on my RU-vid channel and creating videos like this, instead of simply fulfilling customer orders. Thank you for taking the time to comment and reminding me of our history. I can't imagine all that you've gone through and all you had to overcome, but I'm glad you're on the flip-side and doing well! Take care Mike!

I’ll do more - just taking a break from holsters. I enjoy woodworking and making stuff in general, but I can only make so many holster oriented videos.
