Saxons were named as such because of the seax. It was their main weapon (especially in shield walls, where it's hard to swing a longsword), so rival tribes called them Saxons. Pretty sure the originals were definitely way longer (from fingers to elbow). Vikings (which actually just means a raider on a ship) just saw the sense of using seax's in warfare. Been reading English/Danish history, hence my comment, I just couldn't help it. Awesome video bro! keep up the amazing content!!
Beautiful knife! I have just gotten into the hobby, finished forging my first knife a few days ago, I made a simple krumkniv. This template will be my first stock removal project, I am super pumped! Your videos have been a major help and inspiration, thank you for all that you do ✊
Garage gonna get real hot this summer brother. You know how this Texas heat is. Specially over here in southeast Texas in the swamp and coast. Humidity is brutal. Man your videos are a huge help. I’m just startin out in knife makin and don’t have a clue what I’m doin. But your videos are great.
Update - Template Can Be Found Here - www.patreon.com/posts/edc-seax-44182972 Original Pinned Comment - What is yall's favorite knife style/design from history?! It was really fun making a design from the history books. I want to do more of this!
Thanks for your comment sir! That tumbler is bad ass. Works great for what I do here. If you're interested in the construction here it is - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TvzW7ZVGg3A.html Thanks for watching! Cheers
Wow. This is great! I'm almost done building my knife making shop (just need the electrical work completed). I think this will be my first design I try out.
Thanks Wayne, I like how it came out too. I’ll have a full review coming on on that sharpener. There are some large adjustments and jigs that need to be taken into account before making it a solid option in my opinion. It’s not bad; but you need to know what you’re getting into with a couple more items. It gets knives pretty darn sharp though!
Red Beard great video. The word seax is elder futhark" ancient Norce" it means knife. the Anglo Saxons would have learned the word from viking raiders. Another point is the blade you make here is almost an exact replica of the 9 inch blade knife Racine Bowie made for his brother Jim. That's the knife Jim Bowie used at the brawl on the sand bar, where the penny dreadfulls " pocket novels" made him famous. Both the brothers were senatores as well as slave owners. Racine went on to buy trade knives from sheffield to sell to tourists. Racine's diarys are held in a univercitys library and they tell the true story. Part of my family are still in Kentucky. I just became a subscriber. Thankyou. God bless.
You have inspired me to make my first knife out of an old file ... I have no intentions of filming it for anyone but I’ll let you know how it turns out!! I’ll send you pictures.
Discovered yesterday man and now I’m addicted keep the content coming as I’m going to run out in a minute LOL I’ll be interested to know how much of a weight reduction you get from scalloping out the handle in one of your videos could you do a before and after so we can see how much of a reduction you actually get?👊👊
Man great job! Its beautiful! Love the video very informative and you showing stages of the knife it helps when your just starting making knives like me lol! Please keep doing these type of videos.
Good stuff, just curious if you could show the spine more? I'm trying to see where the stone wash stops and the sanded finish starts? Is it along the entire spine and just stone wash on the flat of the blade? Looking forward to the sharpener review.
MrSoloun I have the stone wash stopping where the angle starts. Not sure why I did it that way... just trying something new. I have a really good picture of it here: instagram.com/p/B21UerUjmZK/?igshid=z3w03e9ptzqk
I was trying to pay special attention to this as well. The knife i am currently working on will be stone washed as well with wooden handles and i am trying to decide the best way to go about assembly since i want the stonewash to be on the entire knife (blade, spine, inner handle/spine). Im thinking that ill just have to shape everything to near perfection just before glue up, since any sanding near the spine will just take down my stone wash.
@@blakeparthenay3049 Yep, if you want to keep the spine stonewashed you'll have to do all your shaping with a set of handle scales that can be taken off. You can use take down screws to do this. I normally take the spine to a satin finish to make life easy.
Hey Kevin. On the metal tang I use these counter sinks - amzn.to/2XbdeiJ . On the scales I use this counter bore for my corby bolts - popsknife.supplies/collections/miscellaneous/products/counterbore-tools?variant=25313711030336
@@griffithshandmade-knives So, I've made some significant modifications to the jig and guides that I think make it more useful... stay tuned! Should have that video coming up soon.
J. could you include a few measurements for your sax knife I love the design. Just fiy I like HowardLeight muffs they have really good sound from mp-3 or from your phone.
Another fine looking knife J !!! I have been looking for a wet stone wheel tool for a long time. I knew a trim carpenter about 30 years ago who owned a Delta that was similar to yours but it just had the one stone wheel.
Thank you very much! In my WEN Sharpener review coming up I'll have some very useful modifications you can make to a wet wheel sharpener like that one to make it preform better on drop point blades. Jig modifications and guides. Took me a bit of research to get it working the way I like, but man it makes blades sharp!
¡Me alegra que hayas disfrutado de esta construcción! Consigo el mío de varios lugares. Aquí tienes dos opciones. Pops - popsknife.supplies/collections/handle-screws Amazon - amzn.to/3e5eoTf

And my favourite knife from history would be the katzbalger, a landsknecht small sword / chopper in English it means cat gutter!! Look at the weapons of the landsknecht.... elaborate amazing blades, they were the rappers of their day with outlandish clothes and weapons blinged to the max. I also suggest look at phillipino and Malaysian blades. There’s far more than the karambit which everyone knows....
I’m with you. The Bowie is the 1911 of American knives. I need to make one soon... I’m slightly intimidated by the hidden tang, I’ve only done 3-4 of them and they weren’t up to my standards yet.
Hey love your videos but I got a question for you, where do you live that you carry a knife and a pistol while your working in the shop ? At my age of 65 I carry at least one just going to the drug store here in Florida.
I love that design! But then, I would, being an Anglo Saxon knife-nut! 😎 Great work, James! I'd like to send you a link to pictures on my first knife. Do you have an email? 🇬🇧🤜⚡️🤛🇺🇸
Heck yeah it is! This thing is kinda scary... I poked myself with it packing it up to send it to it's new home. I put it at a 20 degree angle per side.
You mean a Scandinavian not Viking... Viking is a verb not noun. Just a heads up mate...as in a warrior will go on a Viking and is a Dane.... the straight handle is a product of its time.. bodgers were woodsman who set up shop In the woods... handles were made en mass by the bodger and a passing person might buy a handle as is and modify it to fit. Generally turned on a lathe , fancy little adornment could be added, much like today people like to bling up their stuff.... the guard is an interesting element.... it’s obviously guardless... six (the plural of seax) were general purpose everyday working mans knives... hence the lack of tip.. it seems that they differentiated between every day and war. War blades generally daggers and double edged weapons.... absolutely beautiful results... nice edc.. and major respects from one ginger knife maker to another....
