Absolutely loved Eddie's thoughts on foot locks. It's so true that the error often occurs due to many competition's rules that we get good good at defending our upper body by exposing our legs. It adds a whole other element to the submission game when we have to worry about defending more than 50% of our body.
Great video, I never knew he studied physics! I also like the way he expresses his thoughts about grappling, very clear and concise. A very methodical approach to grappling but his game is very fluid, I like it!
+Aloo Ouet Have you not seen his leg lock entries? I think it's fair to say he'd get your average boxer on the ground before they knew what was going on. By the time they realise they've been taken down, their knee would be hanging off.
Very articulate. Like his thoughts on measuring improvement and he expressed his point about heel hooks very well. I've been to schools that ban leglocks for whatever reasons, and I've always wondered about that (I'm a whitebelt nobody, but I have a couple of leg locks from several years of no-gi training)
Sthpw88 most schools ban them for 2 reasons: a - beginners shouldnt be doing them b - they are DESTRUCTIVE and come on very quick...many times youve already shattered the whole knee, or had your whole knee shattered before the tap....
Dio Santana I get that for heel hooks, but I've been places that ban ALL leglocks, no knee bars, straight ankle locks, etc. I don't see those being any different in risk than an armbar, or is my ignorance showing here?
Sthpw88 no i agree. Most of it is on the guy applying it not being a moron. I happen to like toe holds and i just apply them slow and look at the guy im rolling with with a small smile until they tap. I do think the difference is recognition on the part of the person BEING TAPPED. Whereas an armbar is VERY obvious for the most part, and gives a new white belt a few seconds to see it coming, the knee, heel, leg submissions can sometimes be unrecognizable until the pain comes on, and it comes quick. How many times do you see leg submissions at high level being set....then nothing..nothing...nothing TAP TAP TAP...and a high level guy being like fukkkkk grabbing their knee - because the damage was done so damn quick.
You the man Hywel!! :) Just a question.... Do you research your "subjects" and decide what you want to talk about before hand..... or do you just do it off the fly?
HelloJapan05 A bit of both - depends on how well known the guy is. I like to prepare some topics to discuss but often follow the flow of the conversation where it takes us. I always look to get certain things though.
"hipster music"? you cant be serious. What is hipster about brass? not to mention this video is old and Eddie is a better grappler than you and I ever mightl be.
