I had my dates wrong! (I looked through my journal today) ...So sorry for my previous mistake.
This is the last show from the 5150 tour, but it around Nov 3, NOT on October 31
SEASONS GREETINGS!
a little gift for all you rockers ......a few more awesome excerpts from 5150 tour, (the last night)
This video includes the parts of Eddie's solo that were in my last upload, but so many people asked to see more, so I figured I'd upload some more......
WARNING: This includes some swearing, as Sammy talks to the audience about his frustrations with a reviewer.
Although I shot this footage myself, (with a shitty little rented videocamera), all the music and content should rightfully be considered the property of Van Halen (I was on tour all year, playing with the band: B.T.O., the opening act on the tour)

I always loved it when EVH sat down to do part of his live solo...he came down to “our level.” He looks so heavenly in those parts of the video... I hope he’s in heaven, playing for all of us... Love that guy so much, he was my hero and I don’t even play. Thank you for sharing such personal footage.

Tru dat on the bass. I as well as others love VH's faster songs but when they play those mid tempo blue numbers like Waiting For The Bus the bass of course shines thru.

Have to admit this video blew me away. Edward plays an entirely different solo than his signature Eruption, Cathedral, Little Guitars, etc solo that I've seen him play live like 7 or 8 times. Greatest guitarist, songwriter, composer, producer, innovator, and all around musical genius of our generation. RIP EVH.

Thanks for posting. What an amazing solo. I always wanted to see a good quality video clip of him doing one of his bluesy jams from this tour. His tone and his sense of timing and phrasing is really what set him apart from every other player. He was on a different level.

I dont know how anyone can ever say a Hendrix or a Clapton or anyone was anywhere near this guy...hes playing on such a different level than any of those people who are also phenomenal guitar players..but this is in another galaxy...far far superior technically / skillfully...and no can ever say this guy doesnt play with feel...

Absolutly correct! I can play all you mentioned to a T! BUT Ed gives me the most trouble and its never quite right to me, whereas hendrix and clapton i can duplicate without trouble. RIP MAESTRO! I MET YOU I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN. GREAT REVIEW BY THIS MAN.

Eddie was definitely the absolute best when it came to guitar. Not a super shredder but his abilities to play were superior. Vito Bratta was a great player as well.

I'm not tryna be an @ss, but EVH might not have been the player he was without Hendrix, even though Clapton was his main guy. Hendrix was the EVH of his day & was the first insane electric-guitar wizard (I'll respect someone who would say Les Paul was actually the first insane electric-guitar wizard, even though I wouldn't agree). God only knows what he woulda been up to had he not died at the age he did. Homies hyped Clapton because he was best British blues guitarist, & honestly his early years are impeccable. He doesn't come anywhere near Paul, Hendrix, or EVH in technique, but his playing is so tasteful; there's a reason he was EVH's biggest guitar hero. There are so many solos Clapton has done make me think, "that's the only solo that would 'work' in that song." Cream, Derek & the Dominos, at least the first decade of his solo stuff, & a lot of his pre-Cream music features absolutely iconic guitar work. I just listened recently to the London Howlin' Wolf Sessions that Clapton played on & his playing on that is fantastic.

Ive been a Van Halen fan since VH1 but 5150 is maybe my favorite Van Halen album. I do go back and forth on it with VH1! In any case sir, you are one of the nicest and greatest musician ever. Music history is pretty good here but I love the American/Canadian sound a bit better.lol I get ready at 3am and hit the gym around 5-6 (just like right now). From about 6:10 to 8:20 you can hear parts of the solo from “Year To The Day”. Fun to see how that stuff was brewing years before it was put on a record. (Someone else may have already noticed this too.)

@@DVincentW He played on SNL in 1987. The legendary rocker, who died Tuesday at the age of 65, was accompanying his then-wife Valerie Bertinelli to Studio 8H because she was hosting on Feb. 28, 1987. He had zero plans to appear on TV himself - but then house band guitarist G.E. Smith worked his magic.

This solo is definitely different to all the others I've heard. Thanks for uploading. The band were going to shave their heads at the end of the tour. In the end only Alex went through with it and Eddie cut his short - as seen in the video for Hank Williams Jr's "My name is Bosephus"

Thanks so much for posting this. I always felt that the 5150 tour was the last one where his solo still had a spontaneous vibe. On subsequent tours the solo became stiffer and stuck to “best bits” snippets of all the well known stuff. And his playing in general was less inspired, sounded like he was going through the motions a little. I don’t think the 5150 amps helped either, so much gain and too easy to play. You can really hear his fingers working here.

I was at 1 of the 4 cow palace shows, it’s a VH show I remember almost zero of!!!! I do remember a guy jumping on stage wearing a mask & Sammy was saying “Dave, is that you???” Haha😆

@@willswitchcraft I watched the video again… it is truly amazing that your antics on stage stuck in my memory as much or actually more so than Van Halen’s performance!! I really don’t understand why I did no drug or drink & I am a huge VH fan. Like I said previously I saw VH in Oakland 1981 during the filming of their famous live video’s & also in 1984 and I remember more of those shows. Another question, did you just run on stage at one of the Daly City shows and do you remember which of the few shows it was? I’m just wondering if this video I from the exact show I attended. Hmm. I saw Ed playing with Steve Stevens on some YT video (some small venue in the mid-80's) and apparently he lost a bet and had to cut his hair, so for a while he had short hair with a rat tail. Can anyone verify this? He looks a bit older here simply because he has less hair.

I wish Ed did Fur Elise on the LWAN video. Maybe they edited it out. I would love to find a good YT clip where you can see him play it. Can't find a tab for it. I have some of it figured out but not all of it. Just love the phrasing of it. Ah the 5150 tour . . . I didn't go, but I was 16 years old and this was one of the best years of my life. Can't believe it's been 35 years and Eddie is now gone and I'm almost 51 years old now. Unreal.

My pleasure. I had forgot all about the video (back in the day, very few people had cameras, so I had to rent a videocamera for the last day of the tour, in San Fransisco......It was kind of a pain that day, but looking back, I'm so glad that I captured a bit of the tour - it was an unforgettable segment of my life. @@wc7511 Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this post. That night changed my life. I was 12 and my uncle Tim took me up from San Jose to see the show. Little did I know that my life would start that night because from there I picked up the guitar and 34 years later I'm still playing. That evening gave me direction, purpose and a lifetime love affair with music. Will, bless you for this. I'm choking back the tears. You have my appreciation forever!!!!

Great post. Never seen anything that's shown a solo where EVH has altered it to this extent. He usually followed a common pattern or script that you can see in Live Without a Net.

Most of them started off with 316, went into a part of Eruption, then Cathedral, back to more Eruption, then the thing he does on Mean Street, some harmonic work over the board and back to Eruption. He always winged his solo's and they were always a little different, but here he started out with that Godfather tune and then went into a cool EVH blues thing.
