Let me explain. Nick Nolte has retreated into hiding but Eddie needs his help on a missing person who turns up as a corpse on his doorstep. Finally, Eddie convinces him to stage the body so someone else will investigate. The two do their best to avoid getting involved but, they can’t resist following the cops they passed off the case to in the city. The investigators who inherit the case pass off responsibility, fumble leads, and generally fail the deceased. Murphy and Nolte intervene at a distance initially. As their frustration grows they become increasingly direct until they have to physically confront the officers with a slap, kick, and a punch. The plot unfolds and the duo solves the case with the failing understudies uselessly in tow.
