I am Native American and, traditionally speaking, there has never been a whole stigma on if you are homosexual or straight or if you are a man who lives as a woman or vice versa. It was never really even a debate about whether or not to "accept" it or "believe in it" because we saw that it was the way that they were created by the Creator. The only label we really had and still have for explaining it is that the person is Two-Spirited. Which means that they have both Male and female energy within them and many of those people were revered as having what we call medicine, kind of like what has now become know as medicine men and women. It actually wasn't until the forced indoctrination of organized religion that people began to shift their perceptions of these people into a negative. I have never seen a problem with it. As long as nobody is harming anybody, then there is no harm in it.
I love you Eddie , not for being a man or woman , but for being you . You have done a lot of good for all the world by being free with your self and sharing your journey to find peace with your self .
@@gfy8729 because predjice still reigns. Just as he said, why are people still kicking trans people in the gutter? Because of genetics new science have found that LGB and especially T (encompasing intersex and non binary and others) is to do with genetics. We all have them.. it's this obssesion about gender. Very human. It's time we stopped and take a long hard look at ourselves. I mean our government here is in a state of freefall. USA is no better off... if Trump as all American guy God Help us (and I don't even believe in god.

Having been fooled by the extreme left with their constant lies , inciting violence and personal attacks people are now waking up to the reality of ever increasing gas prices and inflation and homelessness together with lawlessness and the hell of incompetence of who was installed after him . During the TRUMP Z presidency North Korea tested no rockets, Russian aggression was non existent , Iran quiet and there was 13 American soldiers and thousands of Afghan civilians alive and breathing not to mention record employment, record investment in minority communities and more money in American pocketbooks and there was no need to BEG those hostile to America to produce more oil .Of course Trump was far from perfect but his was a presidency... right now you've got a residency with Biden and with EVERY coming month more and more pain for the ordinary American people
+Adam Adams -- Never heard of him eh? Despite ... his being called the best British standup of his generation; ... his two Emmys for one of his solo shows; ... his Tony-nominated performance in a Broadway play (btw, he never attended drama school -- he's just that talented and smart and insightful and hard-working); ... his having appeared in blockbuster movies as well as more character-driven stuff (ditto TV)? I'd say all of that makes him pretty damn special --and that's before you add in his kindness, his political activism (he wants everyone to have a chance, even flamethrowers like you), and the gruelling athletic challenges he has undertaken both to raise $$ for charity AND to inspire people to push themselves beyod their comfort zone. . . . . . . d a m n s p e c i a l i n m o s t p e o p l e ' s b o o k s. Adam Adams Live at the Apollo isn't the perfect example of British comedy. All of those acts are TV friendly comedians who spend more time on TV panel shows than actually touring.
He is not my favorite stand-up comedian. He is not my favorite actor. He is not my favorite writer. He is not my favorite transperson. He is not my favorite celebrity. Eddie Izzard is my favorite human being and I love him so.
+Adam Adams ....really? I do a lot with my life actually. I've just been a fan of Eddie for a long time. And over that time being, I've grown to love him for more than his work..but for who he is and meant to be.
yes, unlike you who spends 16/7 on youtube making hateful comments. Come back once you have done actually something with your life. Instead of always being a whiny ass.
no but he's stopping women & girls shitting. 1% of rapists are put in prison. single sex spaces are women's only safety net. they ignored thousands of girls gang raped & he's taking their only safe space. coz now any man who rapes kids can identify into a woman's prison, changing room, toilet. & then rapists are supported & women framed as transphobes.
@@pwrite7273 Rape my friend, harassment, abuse of any kind is still illegal. Being trans is not this get out of jail free card. Furthermore if someone wants to do something awful in the women's room, a little logo with a person wearing a dress will sadly not stop them. On a more personal note. I am of the opinion that anyone pretending to be trans or actual trans people being creeps in the restrooms should be cast into a deep and bottomless pit and made to stay there on a permanent basis 😊
Eddie is just one of the best human beings on the planet. He's brilliant, he's flashy, he's handsome, he's funny - he's the whole package. I love this man.
+youandwhosearmy? I think what Tortor means is that gender is a social construct and is very different to your biological sex. (Example: pink and flowers and dolls are marketed at girls and guns and cars are marketed at boys). They don't identify within the social constructs of gender.
+Dawn Brown I just did some research and apparently some people include ALL non-cis classifications under the Trans umbrella. That would include transvestite, non-binary, gender fluid, genderqueer, etc etc.... Just seems a little confusing. I don't really care what people want to label themselves, I just want to be able to use their preferred gender pronoun.
I think its positively a good sign that our society finds it complicated to label gender identity/preferences. Why not jsut give up labeling and accept that everyone has leanings across a very wide spectrum. Lay down the labels and concentrate on getting to know the individuals themselves I reckon.
My former understanding of it was that Eddie identified as transvestite (dresses up in ladies clothes, does makeup) but not as transsexual (undergoing sexual reassignment surgery). However, now he is identifying as transgender. That's probably terribly confusing if you think of gender as whether you have male anatomy or female anatomy (a dichotomy which people with intersexed anatomy have always found false), but it makes sense if you think of gender as nothing to do with genitalia and only as a social construct that we use to present ourselves to other people. Certainly that's how Eddie uses "bloke mode" and "lady mode" as he sometimes calls them. He doesn't seem to switch pronouns like, say, RuPaul does, but maybe he will in time. The most important thing to note is that it's very brave and generous of Eddie to help us all figure this stuff out by being public about it. After all, this is intensely personal stuff that's none of our damn business, and we should all respect each other's humanity whatever the gender situation.
+AMERICA IS WHIIITE : I wish I could figure out from your ramblings whom you hate the most -- Gay people? Trans people? Jews? All women? The weird thing is, the very people you hate are the ones who stick up for your right to say whatever nutty, hateful shit you want to spew. I feel very very very sorry for you.
Adam Adams What a pointless, hollow, vile thing to say. Your life must be so perfect to make such comments. Perhaps, Mr Big Man, you could look in the mirror and remember who you are, and how lucky you are. Your mother would be disappointed in your attitude. She didn't raise you to speak to people with such disrespect. Some people have a fight on their hands every day to be accepted and you've just proved how much you take that for granted.
+Adam Adams Let's call it as it is.You're an angry person, and you came here to troll -- to insult people who feel more at peace with themselves than you do. But anger covers pain, and I don't want anyone to suffer with pain -- so why don't you consider seeing a therapist and addressing your specific pain and anger? It will free you to use your brains and your talent and your now-suppressed humanity in ways that will actually make you happy. Why resign yourself to a life of illness when you could have a life of contentment with some joy? (I await your defensive, attacking response --which will only prove my point.) I sincerely wish you well.
I've always loved your comedy Eddie, but I have a whole new respect for your humanity now. Your are an amazing human. And I'm glad your're on this planet!
And here all this time I thought he was just a guy who liked nail polish, makeup, earrings and glittery suits. That's what you get for being a non-entity when shit goes down. Well, whatever. Cake or death?
@Zoe K. He said somewhere he somehow feels 100% male, but also 50% female lol. I guess he's fine with male pronouns since he's swaying more in that direction? Idk
I once had a dream where I was Eddie's bodyguard outside a gig and we were attacked on the way to his car and we fought off this gang together. One of my favourite dreams of all time because I know Eddie is a badass and it was awesome to literally fight by his side. Not transgendered myself but always an ally. Go Eddie :)
So intelligent, funny, kind, charming (what I've heard), & such a fantastic actor, comedian, humanitarian & so super sexy. I find it attractive that Eddie came out as transgender years ago. I find it attractive that Eddie doesn't care what nasty people say or think. I find it attractive that Eddie is himself. I find it attractive that Eddie is just so confident. I think he's just amazing. Pure & simple
Matty Perron Yes I do. Wearing nail polish and wearing feminine clothing isnt fitiing into a traditional male role. Then again, these definitions are all circumstantial so I could identify as cis or not and it makes fuck all difference. Never the less, wearing nail vanish doesn't exactly make you a 'man'
...wow, you clearly don't know what you are talking about. No, wearing nail polish doesn't make you a man, it also doesn't make you a woman, you know what it makes you? A person with colorful fucking fingernails! Cis men can and do wear nail polish, makeup, or really anything that isn't traditionally masculine and still identify as men. It has nothing to do with what traditional role they fill, it's about how they self-identify.
Matty Perron *ahem* "Then again, these definitions are all circumstantial so I could identify as cis or not and it makes fuck all difference." remember that? However if you wearing pink nail vanish you probably will not identify as cis.
+moviechic07 He's been making me laugh since the 80s and his description of his journey resonates with me trying to be me with a physical disability in today's world.
Such a legend. One of those people that makes me think....if only there were a million more like him, we’d all have peace. Eddie, you are the kind of person I’m trying to raise my girls to be.
This is such a powerful message "“It doesn’t matter what sex or sexuality, how you identify or who you fancy - it matters not one whit. “What do you DO in life? What do you CREATE? What do you ADD to the human existence - that is what matters." as a multigendered person I appreciate this beautifully articulated wisdom. Thank you Eddie!
Such a marvelous human being; thank you for being candid and awesome. No telling how many lives you've bettered or even saved by being exactly who you are.
Long nails and nail polish doesn't mean you're a girl, and he didn't come out 31 years ago. He always said he liked wearing girls clothes - that makes him a transvestite, not transgender. This 'boy mide, girl mode' stuff is very conservative and regressive. The opposite of gender nonconformity
+John Thelin trans·gen·dertransˈjendər,tranzˈjendər/adjectiveadjective: transgender; adjective: transgendereddenoting or relating to a person whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender.
our beloved Eddie, when you came out you had the fortress of Comedy to stand on and plant your standard as an Action Executive Transvestite. for that we are forever greatfull because you inspired a generation of young people to throw off the shackles of 'what's expected of you' and just Be True 2 You. and you did it with such Style and Aplomb, people wanted to be just like You Thank You.
greetings, my fellow American who enjoys all things British! I've always enjoyed reading your comments on videos from Nick from Fulham and it's nice to see you here as well :-)
I have adored Eddie since the moment I saw him in his blue dress and lipstick in one of his stand up performances. He never fails to make me laugh and I love him dearly for it. He is such a lovely human.
I remember in the early 90s, Eddie was not the first Transgendered person I was ever around but he was the most confident and damn if didn't make me love him more. Sending love, Eddie. So proud of who you are and who you are striving to be!
Nothing but respect for Eddie Izzard. And, the obsession with gender is 'massive.' The sociologist Erving Goffman wrote that not religion but gender is the opiate of the masses.
I never knew that Eddie is transgender. He is such a great inspiration not only because he is publicly sharing how he feels about himself but also because all that he does for charity.
+JYNX He isn't as most people understand the word, ie he was born a heterosexual man, remains one and has no desire to change, he just dresses differently.
Thank you, Eddie, for saying what I've been telling people for decades. It truly is what you do with your life. You are a fantastic human being and comedian! Thank you for making me laugh.
Just because Izzard likes behaviors and things that have traditionally been seen as belonging to women doesn't mean he IS a woman. You can't divorce biology from gender. Izzard should learn to accept that he is a man that doesn't fit this traditional mold of what it means to be a man. There's nothing wrong with that.
I saw Eddie one at DFW airport at baggage claim. I was picking up my wife and I pointed over and said "See that guy? He's famous." I had to explain who he was because she's from Asia and he's not as famous over there. We didn't harass him for a selfie or anything. I thought it was just cool to see him.
You’re doing such a tremendously important job informing about what transgender is/can be. I’m learning from you every time I watch one of your clips. I consider myself to be an open minded person but hey, I realise how little I know and understand. Thank you, Eddie! And by the way; your nails got very nice by the end of this clip! /pP of Swe
i totally agree.... I hate being defined by my physical gender... I relate to both male and female, predominantly male... but I don't want that to define me... i'm me, that's it
Much as I hate putting labels on people, isn't Eddie actually non-binary rather than transgender? Transgender means you identify quite definitely as the opposite gender to the one you have the genitals for, while non-binary means you don't make a distinction between the two - you move fluidly between them (hence the alternative term 'gender-fluid.')
Some use transgender as an umbrella term for any gender identity that isn't cis (identifying with exactly the gender you have been assigned at birth :) Some prefer non-binary or gender-nonconforming, but there are plenty of agender / demigirl / demiboy etc people who call themselves trans. In the end, it's all up to the individual.
@@MeonLights "Some use transgender as an umbrella term for any gender identity that isn't cis" Well, then "some" are clearly wrong. People don't just get to constantly redefine terms that already have clearly defined meanings just because they feel like it.
Funny how he now claims to have 'come out as transgender 30 years ago' when he actually came out as a transvestite. So another 'celebrity' jumping on the 'trans' bandwagon to further their career. All credit to him for doing his charity work, but we don't see him dipping his hand into his own pocket, just encouraging others to give, give, give while 'celebs' continue to get richer & richer.
This opinion is spot on, rather than ask who someone is, ask what they do! ask what they bring. Let's not get bogged down with gender terms and pronouns, being gender fluid nonbinary or cis or whatever it is. I find it incredibly boring, mostly because I don't care; if you want to be a boy, be a boy who gives a crap. But what do you DO! what have you made, or created! what do you bring. Down with identity politics, up with actually doing things
>Saw this on the BBC page >Expecting lots of dislikes and flame comments because British >See lots of support and admiration >Maybe the UK isn't so transphobic after all, I love u ppl
Forgive my ignorance, but isn't he a transvestite not transgender? He doesn't identify as female or prefer to be addressed with female pronouns. He appears to predominantly identify as male, but enjoys both masculine and feminine aesthetics interchangeably, often combining the two.
+Arty Von Sniff : From the Oxford Dict online: "Denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex." One needn't have hormone therapy and/or surgery to be transgender. It's about the stuff between the legs not corresponding to what the person feels him-/herself to be.
I'd say that a lot of animals do care whether others in their species are of the same or different gender. Indeed, infanticide in zoology is often committed on the basis of that very characteristic (whether the young animal is male or female).
Well said Eddie! His personal journey has been hard but that has not stopped him from giving laughter (and ideas to think about) to millions as well material aid to thousands more.
Eddie is one of my favorite humans...as much as you can like someone you don't truly know or have ever meant. Such a brilliant mind and a big heart and guts! Dressed to Kill was my first time seeing Eddie. It came out the year my mom died and it was a good laugh in an otherwise shitty time for me. Always grateful♥️
I was unaware Eddie was intersex or trans, I had always presumed she was not confined by rigid gender stereotypes. Either way, I love Eddie and the positive, loving, kind energy she puts into the world. Get em girl, live your light. xx
I honestly think I've developed a phobia of what was once a very amusing comedian. I can't help myself, really. He looks like a cartoon US senator from the 80's- only with terrifying nails. I really, really HATE long nails. And this fanatical drive and ambition just reminds me of all politicians ever. I'm sorry, Eddie- I miss the old you.:'( Besides, nothing he says anymore resonates with me as a woman.
I only wish I could be so intelligent and well spoken and confident as Eddie. On a side note I don’t think I’ve ever seen him completely without makeup and I had no idea he was so freckled. I like it on him!
The Ancient Greeks, (you remember them, right?! LoL!), valued Androgyny, (identifying as both), above all because it showed your Spirit was fully integrated! I know you don't believe in Spirit that way, but, I've always fancied you, and know that you are a most remarkable human being!!! Love You Lots!!! Best Wishes Forever :)
Really like Eddie Izzard. I think the first movie I saw him in was Mystery Men as one of the disco boys. Thought he was pretty cool looking. The only other one I can think of was "the riches" tv show which was pretty entertaining and interesting as well. Kinda sucks it was cancelled or something. Be cool to meet him in person sometime.
I don’t think Eddie uses the term “transgender“ as most of us understand it. As he says, he identifies as both male and female. But who cares, we fucking love you Eddie! You’re one of the most awesome people on this planet ❤️
Lovely Eddie! Not opting for the pedicure mid-Marathons? I don't do the polish but occasionally do like the pampering of a Mani-Pedi mostly to let someone else deal with it rather than doing half (or rather a quarter of) the job badly with my left hand. Dressed To Kill is still my favourite go-to pick-me-up comedy special.
+Michael Foley : My guess is that he didn't want to disrupt his feet in any way during the 27 days bc they're taking such a beating that any change could be problematic. (Watch the docu Marathon Man from his 43 marathons -- foot trouble.)
wait. hasn't Eddie always identified as a transvestite? ... but now Eddie is saying "Im transsexual?" Aren't transvestitism and transsexuality entirely different things? Is he coming out now as feeling like (s)he is a woman, rather than just dressing like one? Pardon my ignorance (if I come across as ignorant) - as male-identifying penis-haver, these issues can still get quite confusing...
+LipstickLifeLove He's not using transgender as most people do, but some male cross-dressers refer to themselves as transgender as they identify with their feminine side as well as being heterosexual males. I guess there's a spectrum for both sexes. You get women who are tomboys with no interest in clothes and make up but they aren't lesbians, for example.
I've seen Mr Izzard in many dramatic and comedic productions. His rendition of Long John Silver for the remake of the Treasure Island mini series, and his appearance in the Hannibal series were remarkable and brilliant. Never, never did I get the slightest idea that he was transgender. He has worn his cover so cleverly and masterfully on stage and in front of the camera to remain undetected until now. In fact, I always found him to be a turn on, even more so now.
About 20 years ago I saw Eddie in a stand-up special in which he made his entrance to the stage in full drag. He never said a word about it and I thought it was a bit. I laughed uproariously at his routine! I never for an instant thought it was related to his sexual identity, his sexuality or anything else. "Oh look! It's Eddie! Time for laughs!" I hope he is happy, enjoying life and is left alone by the cavemen that just cannot knuckle-drag themselves into the 21st century.
I thought Eddie said previously in a show that he was just a guy who liked dressing up in women clothing. I don't mind if Eddie is trans or whatever. It's just good to see a person being who they want to be no matter what
He done a fantastic job in the run up to the referendum vote for us either staying or leaving the EU. Many times people told me Eddie was their inspiration to vote leave, well done Eddie!!! Job well done!!
