I cried when Les said: “Eddie, go get em!”...knowing he is gone now. It weird but this scene here is like theyre in heaven playing at god’s rock concert for all......
Rest in peace Eddie. Such a fantastic inspiration to so many of us rewatching this video! 06/10/2020 Let us all pay tribute buy erupting the shit out of our guitars today x
+eyeball Any solid body electric guitar is a result of Les' innovation, including one that Eddie pieced together himself. Besides, Les didn't even play the model that is generally named after him.
Les Paul never cared what other guitars others played. Les was and wanted to be known for his inventions and not so much having his name tagged to a specific guitar...
Robert McGee BULLSHIT he didn't care. Yeah he cared. What are you his great great grandson? Bouncin on his lap talking about the first thing that pops up?
when I saw this in 1988, my respect for Eddie skyrocketed after I saw the Love and Real Respect he showed to Les... R.I.P. Les Paul, you truly were one of a kind...
I saw in '88, would like to see that as well, wonder what Eddie could do with the little black box.... that was fun. Thanks for sharing.... good memories... Memories.. gotta listen to that now too.
What a tribute to Les Paul. Such respect. The thing about Eddie is not only did he inspire and advance certain techniques.....he created a distinguished style all his own...and that style to me is where his real genius lies. Tons of guitarists before him and since....but you always know Eddie when you hear him. That distinct sound and style is just epic....and even today it doesn't sound 'dated' in the least. It remains eternally fresh.
The greatest rock and roll guitar player.Even greater than hendrix, for the simple fact that he brought so much to the table. He grew up listening to Clapton ,Beck, page ,hendrix ,but sounded nothing like them. His sound and technic was so original that back in 78,guitar player magazine got an adance copy of VH1.They called everyone into the listening room to try and figure out what he was doing. Was it over dubbing, synth, they couldn't figure it out.Amazing song writer, awesome showmanship.Greatest of all time
bgandjsco1 pas d accord du tout ! jimi hendrix et eddie van halen sont deux guitaristes novateurs mais differents , perso je préfere le son de jimi et il n est surement pas inferieur .
bgandjsco1 EVH was innovative, for sure, but watch and listen to Hendrix play "Message to Love" at Woodstock.Or that song and "Power of Love" at the Fillmore East. Hendrix had to play AND sing main vocals. And with the technology available to Hendrix in the '60s, he did MORE with very little than anybody else ever has and probably ever will. And Jimi CREATED the whammy bar gymnastics, not Eddie.
Rich Ramsey You make good points ,but I respectfully disagree.I've read that Hendrix played through a lot of custom made NOISE DEVICES to achieve his sound.Eddie built his own guitars and modified all his own gear.(pickups,Amps, etc)Hendix hit the bar and his guitar went out of tune,EVH found a way to use the bar and keep it in tune.Eddie used a light dimmer to allow a marshall to SCREAM at low volume. besides if you listen to rock guitar in the early 70's everyone was trying to sound like Page ,not jimi.Ed changed all that real quick
There are those who master their chosen skill. Then there are the few who ascend even higher, performing in ways no one had thought of previously, forever changing their field of mastery. Les Paul and Eddie Van Halen are two outstanding examples of such people.
ok, so i am 60 years old and have seen many of the greats...hendrix, knopfler, beck, page, allman, clapton, santana, prince (yes, prince is a fabulous guitarist)...i was never into van halen, but i have to say that eddie may be the best guitarist i have ever heard...and i love this clip!
EVH should have gotten a few amazing backup musicians, as shown, and done an instrument album/tour. This was way too good to have just done for 5 minutes.
Let's not forget, his "backups" were pretty amazing, themselves, in VH. Agreed, though, that he could've gone the King Crimson route and been a prog god as well.
I like the end when he left Les Paul speechless mumbling "Killer...killer...". And it looks like that Jan and Tony had the time of their lifes trying to chase him...
For 1 man to bring such love of music to sooo many and kiss another grown man on stage, is PURE RESPECTT AND LOVE OF FELLOW MAN!!! ANYONE WHO PLAYS WITH EDDIE VAN HALEN KNOWS HOW SPECIAL IT REALLY IS AND A MOST PRECIOUS MEMORY FROM THEIR LIFE!!! IF WE COULS ALL BE THAT FORTUNATE, MANY WISHES WOULDBE ANSWERED!! A TRUE GENIOUS AND MASTER OF THE GUITAR HE IS!!!!!!!!! A MUSICAL GENIOUS!!!
Mutual respect among legends. Must have been cool for Les Paul to tell Eddie that he wants to see him play and that he's changed things a lot...very cool
Sweet Jesus.... Brilliance at its finest. The love and respect these two have for each other. Who loves who more??? We all need to learn from them. Eddie steals the show, bows out of the spotlight and Les couldnt be more happy to have him there. I laugh and I cry out of love, admiration and respect for the beauty of them and what they have given us.
Eddie was lucky enough as a kid to grow up next door to Les Paul. EVH was so right to honor Les the way he did, because he is right. Les paved the way for all guitar players today, and tomorrow. "See what this guy started." "EVH"
It is hard to find an instrumentalist in any idiom as influential as Eddie Van Halen. He inspired every generation of guitar players that followed him, and had tremendous respect for the provenance of the instrument itself and those who helped craft it. RIP EVH.
That's what it's all about - the wisdom of 'grey hairs' inspiring the next generation. The great thing about Les Paul is that he continued to inspire right to the end of his follicles! I grew up inspired by Eddie Van Halen, etc and great to see someone who inspired him!
Man this video was fucking sick man! So inspiring! This guy was one of my main inspirations on the guitar once when I was more of a rock/metal shred guitar type of player. Now I'm more into playing jazz stuff.
I Don"t Comment Anything Good For V.H. After Roth Left The Band, This Truely Awsome With L.Paul & Without Doubt Deserve"s THUMB"S UP !!!! 👍👍👍👍 Stay Strong.....Peace
3:56: The same lick later used during the first solo of “Don’t Tell Me (What Love Can Do)” off of balance, the solo of Mine all Mine and Year to the Day.
Two guitar giants and incredible innovators. Love and respect. Eddie's amazing skills overshadows his lasting accomplishments as the mad scientist of rock guitar sounds and equipment.
Rest In Peace Eddie Van Halen, sounds as fresh and amazing as the first time i watch this back in the 80's. I played my Van Halen CD's the past days since Eddie passed away, as a personal tribute. Thank you Eddie for walking this planet, and changing the way the electric guitar was played!
Here's Eddie playing with some of the greatest musicians, and you get the feeling he could dust them any time he wants. I think Ed's the best rock guitarist of all time. Nothing against Hendrix .Clapton, page, etc, but EVH brings so much to the table, unreal sound and chops, killer rhythm guitar, fantastic song writing, and what showmanship. He's so origional that when GUITAR PLAYER magazine got their hands on an advance copy of eruption, they called everyone into the listening room to try and figure out if it were a synthesizer or guitar
I think thats an overstatement.I saw them at the garden and he was fantastic. As good as he was in 81 or 89 no, but i've seen alot of great older players in the last few years ,and non are as good as in their prime. The exception might be beck ,but he doesn't really rock hard.Jimi's dead, and Jimi P .? You tube EVH guitars and amps the reviews are great. He's still advancing the sound of the instrument.
No other guitarist has changed the shape of the way we play or approach the instrument more. The only player to have such an original voice that others have chosen to ape instead of becoming their own player. Single handedly attributed to launching the careers of possibly thousands. The only player to make people shake their heads in true astonishment. The guy we all want at the party and wouldn't even mind if they walked home with our best girl. Eddie is that guy. Launching perhaps the most innovative era in the history of ANY instrument. He stands alone atop a mountain of giants.
I miss the old days.. I sure do miss these old days of Eddie.. I go see them (VH) on April 1st.. but I fear I wont hear him as good as this !! -- my HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The way Ed shows his respect and the way Les says that he'd like to see what Ed can do, just amazing because Les is such Legend and Ed's going to make everyone shit their pants!
Everyone thinks of Ed as a lead guitar player because of his insane skill but he was truly the best rythum player who has ever lived . Page was like that as well. Both those guys played amazing rythum and lead.
It is always a shame when anyone forgets that there is a "HISTORY" to all forms of music. To forget or not respect that is a shame! I love this video. It always reminds me of the $11.00 third row ticket for the 1984 concert that I watched. My Friend Kevin (R.I.P.) I miss you. Man it was a great Van Halen show. Lights out and then on! David hits the splits in mid air, bombs explode and Mr. Van Halen is ripping up and down the neck of that guitar!:):):)! He's often copied!!!!!
