My mother developed edema in both feet and ankles in the last couple of years. I decided to take amino acids myself for general health and also gave my mother two servings a day, around the amount of protein in four eggs. I was surprised and happy to see that this resolved the edema.
@@HeleneLouise Is it a pill? Where do you get it? I've got swollen feet and legs also, and have tried different things, but nothing has worked very well.
@@rebeccahernandez3460 It's called PerfectAmino. I get it from Body Health. I started taking it because of lower back pain. I thought it might help with healing. I started this in January. I'm not healed exactly, but I have been happy with general improvements, like skin. I'm really thrilled with my Mom's improvement. I had read an article that swollen feet and legs can be caused by inadequate protein intake. I've also read in several articles that we need a lot more protein than most people get. Maybe 100 g a day, especially as one get older. BTW, I also learned that the most bioavailable protein food is eggs. The protein in eggs is almost 50% absorbed by the body, where meat, fish and poultry is only absorbed about 33%. I take the pill form of this supplement, but my mother takes the drink. The pill are difficult to swallow.. I get the coated ones. Good luck Becky. I hope that helps.
a lot of the elderly prefer the tea and toast diet when they should be eating protein..1g for every kg of weight...4 eggs a day is a good start...tins of tuna are another good source and easy to get down
Thank you so much for this great information on swollen ankles, feet, and other parts of the body. She delivers the information straight up, and easy to understand, thanks!
i have swollen on my body and i have been suffering from this illness for the past few months, but not until found Dr iyhere on youtube, i used his herbal medicine and it cured me totally🥰❤😊
Thank you for speaking clearly, hesitating & delivering great info - easy to understand. Hesitation allows time for the listener to think about the info given & develop thoughts as the story continued! Great job!
For three years I have been going to my doctors trying to find out what is wrong with me the swelling started in my ankles now it’s going right up to my thighs and I’m beside myself with worry that I’m just gonna drop dead. So glad I found you a video im taking it to my doctor . I live in Australia and we are supposed to have one of the best health care systems in the world it’s all bull.
I love the way you explain edemas . please keep educating us and let us know everything we can do and what what we need to ask our physician. Thank you!
I have experience with this and know that doctors know nothing about how to help one improve the problem with edema. They don't seem to know as much as this doctor, or they just don't want to take time to explain. No help from doctors. I think that we are moving into a total self-help situation with our medical questions.
I can relate to your frustration. Edema can really interfere with a person's life and it doesn't get the attention it deserves at times. Good for you for wanting to learn more on your own.
I JUST replied to another comment lamenting how little doctors have had to offer on this. What the F man? Ok so put the feet up. Wear the socks. And… what if it’s not a “preventative” situation and there’s already a problem? Waste hundreds of $$ on electrodes that “pull oxygenated blood down to the feet”? They literally tried to pawn this scam off on my mom and claimed they’d bill her insurance. Only to send her a $1000 bill and vanish. Can’t return it if you can’t get ahold of the company!! Haha. Got em! That’s what passes for “treatment” these days.
I had edema for OVER A DECADE! Tried plethora of treatment including those tormenting pressure socks which just transfer swelling, and are more painful that edema itself for me. doc's were perplexed. For recent infection, was prescribed doxycycline by a doctor for infection. Side effect was that Edema also went away quickly, infection not so fast. Edema has never returned. YOU MUST TRY THIS!!!
For me its it depends on how much carbs i eat because the more i eat the more my body swells up mainly my hands feet and legs. After getting up in the morning is when my legs will be the least swollen but the swelling is never fully gone unless my carb intake from the previous day was minimal through the keto diet. I just want to be sure and know that after i go some time on the keto genic diet that when i go back to eating carbs in a-healthier way that my legs wont go back to swelling . Thanks for the vid i like this was more of a personal situation rather than the explanation of the medical condition.
Dietary intake can definitely affect leg edema, usually in terms of salt and fluid consumption, though. Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience.
@Aurisme 영기 i went to hospital and do blood test. my heart and my kidney is okay. maybe because im overweight now and that night i sleep 7 hours on a chair. the blood circulation is not good. i dont know what will happened in the future... but my doctor say im fine for now. and the swelling happened once only... im still scared till now... good luck
I'm 67 and have had foot and ankle swelling for the past 3 months or so. I've been afraid to go to the dr. and was glad to see your video. I'm going to try the elevation and compression first. If nothing improves, guess I'll break down and go to the doc. Thank you!
I'm 67 and out of nowhere my feet got sowellen, and my hands,..I do compression and elevation, I did had my Dr looked at, and he ordered EKG witch it was normal, and other tests with blood work,.. I used to eat lacately cheese, in chunks very salty, I stopped and all other foods that are high in sodium,.. I'm gonna get the tests and blood work done to see if my Dr has any suggestions,..but in general my numbers are good as far as sugars, cholesterol, etc is concerned,..so I'm confused, but I do go back on high sodium .. Thank you for sharing Good luck .
I was afraid of going 2 Dr also. Why were u? My reason 4 swollen ankles , feet is due 2 weight gain & not being active enough 2 have blood circulation going. Go 2 the Dr. If u DNT u will nvr knw. DNT worry over everything going thru ur mind like I did..find the cause & remedy. Bless u darling I hope u do this not just 4 u but 4 those who love u❤.
Mine was caused by iron deficiency caused by gluten intolerance. It lasted 2 weeks but went away when I switched to GF diet and started taking probiotics.
I am very happy to come across this. My dad is 59 years old, he developed serious Edema of the legs and later when taken to the hospital, he was diagnosed of pulmonary tuberculosis. He had been placed on medication for 2 months now but the edema is still not improved rather it had gotten to he's lungs now, as he as well finds it difficult to breath especially at midnigts after lying flat on the bed. He's condition is really confusing because he has been placed on water pills like Furosemide yet the edema still continues. I dont know if it's TB that's responsible or venous insufficiency or even heart failure..
I had that problem too of edema and went to the hospital, but the treatment wasn't helping at all. So I was given advise to get one piece of garlic, two spoons of Honey, five pieces of Lemon, u add one spoon of turmeric and put in a saucepan.add a water and boil.en give him to drink wen it warm
My feet started swelling up about 30 years ago and are now so permanently swollen that I need special shoes. Many doctors, tests, etc. Other than severe foot and ankle arthritis, no cause of the swelling has been found. I now have lymphedema and lipedema. This was a nice video, but hopefully someone else can be helped by it. I'll keep searching for answers.
My mom has the same thing. I’m 2006 her legs began to swell at the calf. Then that spread to the ankle. And now, from the mid-thigh down through her toes is massively swollen and purple most of the time. She sees doctors constantly. They suggest putting her feet up, and otherwise have very little to offer except some topical lidocaine rub. It’s pretty maddening. Especially if you’re a person that listens to doctors and considers that THE WORD. I personally think it’s more important to become the expert ones self. But I’ve also been observing this since 2006 and there’s almost no explanation as to when it will happen, what’s causing it, how long they’ll be that way, and when walking becomes possible again. She doesn’t do much walking or exertion anymore so it’s not AFTER exercise or whatever. It’s totally random. I’m so sorry you have to cope with this. It seems to be very painful and certainly makes my mom feel helpless and depressed. I wish there were some ‘thing’ to point to and say, “do this and it helps”. It’s utterly crappy.
@@dennislurvey3235 treatment options are few and even fewer am I even remotely able to do myself. I saw a handful of doctors over the years, had a couple tests, including an ultrasound, and saw a lymphedema specialist 3 times. I couldn't afford the treatments and her 4 at home options were all a no for me because of either inability to do myself or too expensive. So I gave up.
@@DylanMadd my right foot started swelling up in the early 90s, right after high school. It's been very gradual, but now both feet are extensively swollen, as well as my left leg, and lipedema has ravaged my upper legs, and I think has spread into my backside. (My butt used to be flat, now it's more like a bubble). The only pain is in my feet, due to the arthritis, but my legs feel like cement. Even finding socks that fit has been a challenge. I'm just thankful that I found a job where I can sit and work.
You could have vit B12 deficiency. Ask dr to give you vitamine B injections gor a month and cut out yeast and sugar from your diet , no bread, no coffee, no red meat, eat oats for breakfast, lots of salad without sauces, walk at least for an half an hour at lunch time. See the difference after one month!
I have swelling in my feet and now my knees are hurting also. I read some where that a lot depends on how you sit..ie you need to be in proper position so there is circulation going on. I used to get cramps in legs at night..I started taking apple cider vinegar daily and helped..also if you press your finger under your nose..the pain stops. I unfortunately put on a lot of weight which has made pain go into knees...I did Qui Gong for Seniors today and feel 100% better today though feet still swollen. I also have thyroid problem but doctor does not know how to deal with..I refuse to take any kind of meds and will continue to try natural products ie teas, herbs. I have to lose the weight but not that easy with thyroid problem. We should start an Edema Club!
I'm so happy to hear that Qi Gong made you feel good! The Edema Club would have a lot of members for sure! Hope you can keep working with your doctor and stay active to get on top of your edema. Thanks for watching.
I typically get swelling in my legs above my ankles, and the only time I don't have it is when I take a blood thinner. My heart is fine, but because of very small size blood vessels I have typically above average blood pressure. I have gotten no solid answers from medical doctors.
I like the way you explained the materials slowly and clear with words the everyone understand not long medical words that are boring. Thanks for the informations. Keep it up. Would you please do a video about the functions of the kidneys. Thanks a lot. Have a great day.
Thanks so much for watching the video and for your feedback! I'm so glad you liked the video. I do have a video about the kidney, where I interviewed a nephrologist: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kMyKeTQRbOQ.html I will consider doing more about the kidney, it's a fascinating topic!
Do the compression socks do anything for prevention? My mother has bad leg circulation as a 62 year old and can’t walk anymore. Been happening and getting worse every day for the past 23 years. I’m a type 1 diabetic and am certain to have circulation issues, even if I wasn’t genetically prone to have her problems. Aside from putting the legs up, what else can I do for prevention? Here’s what i think now: 1) Stretching/yoga 2) Exercise - walking 1-2 miles at least each day 3) Compression socks. (4) and of course manage sugar)
You made my edema grow bigger by watching this video. I'm going to stop eating for a while while so my foot edema get better and put my foot up too thank you for sharing and careing 😀
This disease is so disheartening that i have seen lots of vids about it..my mum has it because of vericose veins it progressed lot after 20+ years Thanks for Education 😇🙏
I experience swelling after sitting. I suspect it causes a constriction of circulation. The size of my feet is diminished in the morning, but the condition is still bad: I feel a compressible layer above the bones, and during cold nights I feel pain in the feet. But the swelling is completely drained after a moderately intense walking and climbing of stairs. Only a thin skin remains above the bones of the foot. It is a miracle. Raising the leg up on a table does nothing, and causes discomfort from where it presses against the surface.
The video is informative. I loved to watch it. What was more interesting was the way edema was explained. I can hope and expect to watch many more videos on important health issues. I suggest that sequence of narration should be introduction, symptoms, causes, prevention and remedial measures. Thanks doctor.
God nothing to do with this 🤨 Millions die of crimes sickness viruse disease where's god 🧐🤨 Don't eat too much free pig 🐷roast & bacon sausage 🦏 in church in your home 🧐🤨
This was very informative. Thank you I have been dealing with swollen feet and legs. Sometimes my face and even stomach and arms. (Thats not common, but i don't understand) usually its my ankles and legs. I have been in the same dose of losartin/hydrochlorothiozide for about 8 years. They have done heart tests. I need to look into this more and figure it out.
Odema or edema, is the more modern term for what a few generations ago was called dropsy. Points raised in vid are true; it can take 25 years to fully manifest itself, beginning with previously minor knocks to the shins now ulcerating and taking a very long time to heal. You can no longer walk into a shoe shop and buy whatever footwear you want - your doctor might refer you to the orthotics section of a hospital for custom made shoes. Having been told that there is no magic pill for it, you will likely end up putting on compression wraps each morning to manage the condition. Weather and temperature have a big effect on odema; summer is torture time, amplified by the hefty leg wraps, which if taken off, cause the limbs to swell out and tighten the skin, making it an easy target for biting insects, the bites of which induce scratching which leads to ulcers that leak freely and take a month of Sundays to heal. Pharma diuretics can help but be wise to the side effects. Winter is relief time relatively speaking. Do not ignore the onset symptoms; you cannot "tough it out" this time. Get blood and urine tests for liver and kidney function and work out a management plan with your medico/therapist. Some of the exercises suggested on other channels are good and helpful as long as you can still lie on floor (and get up again!) I am told the majority of sufferers are women, so this 74 year old man must be one of the unlucky ones. The above is a condensation of what could easily be a booklet which I have no wish whatsoever to write!
This is what happen to me and I'm still struggle with that .I don't know the case but I feel pain, burn and the swell is still continued ..I'm 24 this happen to me almost 11 years know ..the doctors told me u don't have any problem ..I loss.my confidence
Lord Jesus help us navigate through this troubled world. Shine forth your light so that we can find you in this dark world. Let our eyes be fixed on you.no matter what the circumstances. You are our hope and our salvation. 🙏
I'm 66 and have had swelling in my ankles and legs my whole life. My Dr. says I have something called Milroys disease, and there is no cure or help for my legs. I have had a heart attach 2 years ago. Most of my life my legs didn't bother me, but lately I've started to get a lot of pain in my legs.... I wish there was some help for me. I wear support socks every day and SAS shoes...(the best I can buy). Is there any help anywhere? Thanks.
I went to the doctor in my early 20s with grade 4 pitting edema, and the doctor diagnosed me as having "gravity edema". What a bs diagnosis. No 20 year old should have pitting edema. If they do, there's something more going on than gravity. Had my doctor given a crap 25 years ago, I probably wouldn't have such a bleak outlook concerning my health today. Doctors, please do better than this for your patients, and people, expect better than this from your doctor. If you get a bullshit diagnosis like gravity edema, it's time to find a new doc.
Sorry for the long story just very frustrated, THERE IS A ? AT THE END. About 30 yrs ago my mother completely shattered her left ankle and had pins put in (54 at the time). Due to stubbornness she never had them removed although was advised to. Now at 85 her ankle has been swollen for several years without pain up tho. She also has (for about 2 years) a weird scab on the outside ankle bone that falls off but comes back, from the xray there is a pin there. GP was not concerned about the swelling?? (there is also some in her right ankle and both calves) but sent her to a dermatologist for the scab. She told the Derm. about the break and he literally threw his hands back and said you have to go to an Ortho Dr. Which she did and He advised to take the pins out. She chose not to. And I agreed with her decision because at 85 almost 30 yrs late I'm thinking the strength of her ankle could be compromised taking pins out that bone and scar tissue most likely grew around. A Dr in our family said to start drinking lots of water and exercise the calf muscles throughout the day to get circulation going. She doesn't get out at all since my Dad passed away. She now just told me she thinks the swelling is getting worse. She had started PT but dropped it?? Her GP is a geriatric Dr but didn't seem to care. She did her yearly Medicare checkup which was useless. And even another Dr I took her to brushed everything off with getting old. Now she is stubborn and I know probably doesn't do any of the exercises. Just like she quite PT. We live in different states otherwise I would makes sure she made it there. But here is my ? What type of Dr should she see that would take the time to check her heart, lungs, etc. It may not even be her ankles. I don't even understand how a Geriatric Dr is any different from a regular GP, she has seen 2 and they brush her off. This peripheral Edema could be what she has. How do I get a dr to look into this?? And what type of Dr.? Thank you, I went thru 2 yrs of trying to help my Dad and no Dr could diagnosis his illness. I can't let my mom down too.
Will it ever go away I’m a 2 time cancer Survivor and ever since my first cancer removed I have swelling ankles since I was 39 now I’m 67 and still have them that I hate looking at it and always wear long pants I could never go to the beach or wear shorts during the summer time some times if I stay too long on my feet it gets worst but what you are saying are very true thank you for your video it was very helpful 😊
Hi Russell. "Water on the knee" is not really a medical term, but we use it to refer to an effusion in the joint itself. So a compression stocking might make the edema look more prominent higher up on the leg but it shouldn't make the knee itself swell. The fluids are in separate compartments. Thanks for the question!
Very hepful; many thanks...I've put a couple of telephone directories under the foot-end of my matress! +trying compression stockings...+reviewing my diet!...thanks..
Very glad that my cause was from just taking too many Ibuprofen, tylenol and aspirin. My new doctor had me halt those and within only a week totally reversed my swelling, tightness and pain.
I am 72 years old. Three years ago I had severe unbearable pain in my left lower abdomen. After a few days it developed into diarrhea. My doctor thought it was IBS and treated it accordingly, failing miserably. During this I developed severe and very painful pedal edema to the extent that I couldn't walk. Took protein rich food to no avail. When I saw a GE, he did a colonoscopy and told me that I had UC from an untreated colon infection which blew up into full fledged UC. after two years of misery, it went into remission. Finally I discovered that even with a little bit of alcohol or anti biotics, it would flare up. When UC subsided, my pedal edema was gone. Have you encountered this in your practice?????
Swelling in one foot and not the other can be related to an injury, as you mention, but could also be related to a blood clot, infection or arthritis. I would see a health care provider about that.
Don't ignore this as a symptom. My swollen ankles suddenly spread up my legs to knees and thighs. Thirty days later I needed emergency open heart surgery. Look for the cause.
Thank you so much for the information but I have to laugh when you said 'ask your doctor's ! I've been asking various doctors about for swollen feet & ankles for 20yrs - even as recently as in the last three months - and they don't have a clue! The last doctor I asked about it told me that there is nothing can be done as its been so long now that it can't be fixed yet still she had no idea what caused it. I live in Ireland and although I believe some of our doctors & graduates have contributed to some wonderful medical advances over the years our GPs are lacking in any real knowledge about things such as edema
If you can use a swimming pool several times a week they might improve. I did not say be cured. The pressure of the water pushes the fluid up the leg which temporarily helps the edema.
My mum has severe swelling in her leg and foot ,recently its getting blisters and then the skin breaks and bleeds ,she has gone to drs several times and they say its her weight, my mum is on blood pressure tablets and she has angina my mum is 68 she can't hardly walk around and the pain is so bad if she does walk anywhere, she is over weight but it does worry me that the drs don't seem to be bothered she can't even fund a shoe to fit she has been wearing the same ones for over 3 yrs and they are stretched to shape of her foot ,she is also on water tablets
I'm not a doctor and just found this channel. Your comment stood out and I can share what I did a few years back and what I'm getting ready to do again. I consumed fruit smoothies for 10 days (no solid food, you can even eat just fruit and vegetables as well, no meats, sugars, or carbs), and every area of swelling in my legs, angles, and feet disappeared. I wasn't even doing the smoothies to target swelling or even knew how to stop it, it was a discipline fast so I could hear God clearer. The results were overwhelming. I'm getting ready to do another one because I am dealing with swelling and want it to stop. I will be praying for your mum.
My mom is going through the same thing. She just developed blisters on one of her legs. Ill be taking her back to the doc tomorrow. I wish i knew a way to get her swelling down but these blisters are also concerning. It looks like nummuler dermatitis.
My husband started gaining weight during he’s time off work because of knee surgery and now he has problems sleeping and has bad sleep apnea and he wakes up in the middle of the night I have to stay up to watch him . I’m exhausted but he’s been sleep waking breathing hard that it scares me but he goes back to see a sleep doctor I hope they can help him . And yes he drinks alcohol and he is a alcoholic .
The best thing to do is to use what I call is a tubegrip. It's a elastic tube, now ankle guard is very tight, this tube grip is not very tight and can be used for a longer time without getting numb(ness) feeling. Take it out for sometime and then put it on again but never while sleeping. I hope you all understand what I mean by tubegrip, if I get the correct name I will let you know. In Muscat Oman, they used to call it tubegrip
Might be …. I’m a bodybuilder and I’ve gained some extra pounds within this last few months and yesterday I just found out my ankles and legs are swollen….
THANKS trying to reduce it with lifting and hot-cold water Getting much better early mornings but again it comes back after long sitting behind computer desk it just happened to me in a week and it could be relayted to my heart/ i had a surg In 2014 , i just stoped my very bad diet of eating lots of processed food yogurt and potato cheaps .. Hospital wants to CT scan my abdomen as soon as possible Hope it would disappear with all these challenges
my leg feels a little swollen, one part of my leg is bigger than the other. i went to the doctor and they told me not to worry but i am still concerned. i have pain in the area too.
A new "huge red rash" could be due to an emergency cause - like a blood clot or a severe infection. I get especially concerned when a person has a rash with fever or other symptoms like trouble breathing and chest pain. When in doubt, get a healthcare provider to check it out.
I soaked my l foot in a c vinegar; due to discoloration in nails. Several days later, some swelling was noticed. Today the swelling, is still with me; after about 4 months. Dr. Rx ed me with anti biotic for 5 day trial and didn't work. I'll see him in July.
mine was caused from s pill called Metoprolol . i quit on a my own. started again with another condition and same thing happened. omg my feet got so big . i will not try again. couldn't put shoes on.
Both my ankles get very swollen and sometimes are painful but sometimes one will get swollen and stay swollen for days please help me I don't know what to do
Okay, I have one for you. My doc has been unable to explain it. I woke up one morning in about mid-spring with my feet looking like balloons with little sausages hanging off the end. And they stayed that way (maybe up a little or down a little, but never not swollen) until about halfway through October -- when I woke up one morning and they looked like feet again, and have stayed that way ever since. I have not changed anything that I'm doing or not doing, nothing I'm eating, nothing I'm drinking. I've always had a tendency for my feet and fingers to swell more in the summertime, but nothing so pronounced or so sharply defined. Any ideas? My doc's got nothing, but if I could get it figured out before next spring rolls around, it would be awesome.
What kind of doctor do we need? My husband went to our family doctor and he didn’t do or know what to do. He has referred him to a cardiologist but the swelling is worse and it takes a while to get in to the cardiologist.
Sorry to hear you're having trouble - its always hard when a trusted physician retires. A general internist would be able to sort out the cause of leg swelling most of the time, so I would ask for a referral to one of them. Best of luck!
Years ago a friend of mine , while visiting me -- had a lot of fluid in her arms and explained to me her doctor told her to put one arm up straight and by using her other hand she placed it at the wrist and put pressure on it to her arm pit. She explained by doing this the fluid can be pushed downward and then goes to the bladder to be moved out if the body. It's amazing. so yesterday I went outside to do some gardening -put on my socks and they seemed a bit tight - so I continued and put on my sneaker--couple hours went back in house and took off the sneakers and tight socks. It looked so funny--right above where the socks were was a roll of puffy skin, making it look like the cuff of my pants-- so I went to my bed and starting to massage my ankle from the puffiness down my whole leg for about 5 to 10 minutes on both ankles and later the puffiness was completely gone. My doctor prescribed my fluid pills but I do not take them much as I drink regular tea and green tea seems to keep fluid down. Hope this helps someone
