Eden: a tribute to Jeff Lamb and the Armathwaite climbers

In the early 1970s the border city of Carlisle became an unlikely epicentre for hard trad climbing and a scene developed that rivalled any in the UK. The atmosphere was competitive, a new E-grading system was born and new milestones were set.
Eden is set around a little known crag close to Carlisle called Armathwaite. It was a meeting place and training venue for the Penrith and Carlisle teams who were looking to make their mark on the British crags.
The film features Pete Whillance, Pete Botteril, Charlie Woodburn and Pete Gunn and is a tribute to a much loved character who changed the face of British climbing, Jeff Lamb.

A lovely video and a fine tribute to Jeff, who I met and occasionally climbed with in Australia. Coincidentally and unknowingly, we had both emigrated there about the same time in 1981, but I knew him from his reputation beforehand. A small correction to the notes at the end of the video: Jeff's accidental death was in October 1983. Maureen, Jeff's widow, asked me to give the eulogy at his funeral service in Brisbane - a difficult and solemn duty. He was a great fellow and much missed. This refreshes old and sad memories. Thanks to all those involved.

The great British climbing public were first introduced to E grades by an article in Crags 5. This article specifically credited Pete Botterill with inventing the system. Just like Mr. Whillance says here.
