Ryne: “I can handle it!” *Nearly causes a second flood of light.* Me: “okay, so remember when Emet said we weren’t fit to be caretakers of this star?”

The lore implications of this fight are absolutely fantastic. Basically, Ryne kept switching between a Shiva avatar and a psuedo-Hydaelyn avatar because of her Oracle of Light affiliation. During the first transition phase she LITERALLY sunders the party in half using the same pose depicted in the cave paintings pointed out that Emet-Selch and during the final transition when she completely loses control she starts to summon an ACTUAL flood of light that if left unchecked would have engulfed all of the First.

Ah yes, bad idea the boss fight. Has turning into a primal ever worked out? I would've vetoed that idea right off the bat. "No you can't be the next boss fight!"

Yeah, Thancred and Urianger never would have seen Shiva. I think Estinien, Alphinaud, Y'shtola, and Cid are probably among the few allies that have witnessed the transformation.

so fun fact about shiva and her music. the boss room with fenrir that shiva's aetherite is in in snowcloak is call "the gates of oblivion" the song that plays during her boss fight is called "oblivion" it was also the very first phase change/music change combo in the game, which is part of the reason it stands out so much. in eden shiva's music is called "return to oblivion" and it contains what sounds like multiple singers that are transitioning between being in perfect harmony and massively discordant and distorted. because ryne and shiva aren't of one mind, she fights back and the light tries to take over as well. not to mention that if you fail to stop her, the first will return to oblivion with the flood of light returning. they also mirror the original shiva fight in the music starting orchestral and becoming something else as they transition into the second phase.

So it turns out channelling a Primal bound to one of the sorest points in the WoL's adventure through a small Light-attuned girl who's never tried it before and lacks the Echo that let Ysayle command its power was a bad idea. Who'da thunk? Banger track, though. Jokes(?) aside, probably my single most favourite Normal Raid fight in the game.

Little tidbits. The 'Light Form' of this fight mimics the cave drawings of Hydaelyn. Similarly, her mid-battle transition sunders the party to different platforms, same as how Zodiark was sundered, including similar animation. For FF8 fans, the music in the scene when leaving the arena is another Final Fantasy 8 track: Ami

The one where Ryne almost end the entire universe. This one is fun.

so a reason why they keep the textures and quality down is so that it can accommodate a wide array of systems to allow people to play the game, its why if they do graphical enhancements its very small and minor and over long stretches of time. A big thing to consider when creating an MMORPG is your system spec requirements to run the game. You can have the prettiest game out there but if its way too heavy on a player's machine then you won't be able to hit the critical mass of players to keep the game running long term, its why the new MMORPGs like Ashes of Creation may look pretty but is really worrisome on if low end systems can actually run the game decently or not.
