Being albinos, Johnny and Edgar could spend a lot of time outside in the sun so they spent their time indoors, learning and playing music. I went to one of their concerts in the 70’s. You should react to “Tobacco Road”. Johnny has an amazing voice.

Hi K! That was Awesome. My early Christmas present. I'm glad you liked it. It got its name because so much editing was done so by the time they pieced the song all together it was a monster, therefore the name Frankenstein. Thank you! ❤

My dad loved horns so I was raised on Chicago, Tower of Power, BS&T, and Edgar Winter. I had a cousin, Bill Dunham, that was from Pine Bluff, Arkansas that was in a band when he was 18 for a weeklong stint in Kickapoo, Mississippi. They were staying at the Joy Motel and Edgar and Johnny Winter were staying there for a week, playing at a different club. They were "It and Them" at 18 yrs old. Bill said they would watch each others shows and party till dawn. He said those boys could party, filling up trash cans full of empty liquor bottles. His sister, Jane, dated Johnny for 6 months or so back then. I took my son to see him at the Ft. Smith, Arkansas bluesfest about a week before he died. He was lead out to a folding chair by one person on each arm. He sat down, was handed his guitar, and he burned it up.

Back in the day 60-70's musicians would lay down base tracks on tapes. Edgar and the band had laid many tracks down from different melodies they were working on. As these melodies grew and with the use of many different instruments, they'd record them on many tapes. They cut those tapes, arranged them and spliced them together to make the first studio creation of an instrumental. Being it was stitched together so many different tapes, they called it Frankenstein after spliced together man of the book and movie, they didn't think it would amount to much. It grew into the monster that it is today!

Girl, you should hear his big brother! We always looked at Edgar as "the weird one" lol. Johnny Winter is a Texas Blues legend! Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980, he was a powerhouse on a slide guitar (or mandolin or acoustic guitar) and played a Gibson Les Paul. Try "Too Much Seconal"!

According to Edgar, the name actually came from when they were recording this in the studio. Back then everything was on tape reels. Editing meant clipping the tape, tagging them, then taping it back together the way you want it to sound. For this song, the clippings were MANY. They were draped over chairs, consoles, EVERYTHING. Then one of the musicians - I don't recall which - commented that it was like they were trying to put Frankenstein together. That's how it got its name.

Brings me back to my days runnin' atop a chopped down '47 Knucklehead, trippin' on acid, and haulin' a couple of 38s named Shannon & Raven. Best damn rock instrumental EVER, ...period! "Trippy!" Ya' gotta love the 70s! (P.S.: It's called "Frankenstein," because of the arduous editing that went into the song; it became a MONSTER when it was pieced together in the studio.)

All of the other comments on the origin of the song have a bit of truth in them, but this is the entire story as told by Edgar, himself. In their early days, when they did concerts, they would do an about 25-30 minute jam somewhere in the middle of the concert. It became known as the Two Drum Duel, or something similar. A couple years later while recording their album, They Only Come Out At Night, they needed another song to fill out the time. So, they decided to record a version of the song. It ended up being about 27 minutes long. They only had about 5 minutes of time available. Back then you recorded on magnetic tape, so they decided to just splice some parts out. Rick Derringer, the guitarist and producer, and Edgar got out the razor blades and tape, and proceeded to painstakingly cut it up and tape it back together. The magnetic tape is a dark brown color, and the splicing tape is generally either white or yellow, so they easily can be seen. By the way, this was the master tape they were chopping up, so a mistake would be disastrous. At the end of that editing session, the song was still about 18 minutes long. So they started cutting more of the song out. It was still about 10 minutes, so they continued debating what they could cut out untill it was finally pared down to the final length that was included on the album. The next day, when supposedly the drummer saw the resulting song all chopped up and taped together, he shouted out, "You really Frankensteined that!". Everyone said, "That's what we ought to call it, Frankenstein!. And so it was. Because they chopped up the master before making a copy, we have no copy recorded of the original song, and that was before everyone had a phone they could have recorded it, so enjoy this version, but know that the original was about 4× as long.

Maybe someone said it already, but I am pretty sure I remember him saying that he called it Frankenstein because it was made up of a bunch of song parts/ideas he had not used yet so he decided to stitch them all together to make this song.

Actually how it got it's name was Edgar had experimented with this song for a while and he didn't have a name for it. They were cutting an album and needed another song. Although he hadn't named it, he nicknamed it Frankenstein because the song was created bit by bit over time. He had combined many different mixes and then it was finished deliberately to fill the album. But they didn't have a name so they went with how Edgar would refer to the song "Frankenstein" because he put the song together like Franenstein was. The song was a successful hit unexpectedly. It's shorter than this live version. Some of the live version had added parts not on the "single" to entertain the audience which often happens in concerts. Who knows maybe some the live version was part of the original Edgar was experimenting with before the editing. Edgar can sing also. He's very talented. Jimi Hendrix was interviewed and asked "what does it feel like to be the greatest guitarist in the World" his reply was "I don't know asked Edgar Winter". Just for kicks : Frankenstein is the doctor who put the monster together. Monster's correct name is " Frankenstein's Monster".
