I watched a video that explained it to me. The reason why no one is putting stock into original screenplays, is because of how perfectly distilled the storytelling concepts the first films of all these worn-out franchises. For example, no one is ever going to make a Sci-Fi with plasma based swords of different colours with associated meanings of good and evil, and viewers are not going to think "That's just a lightsabre." Once you've had a taste of perfection, everything is downhill until the original spark that began it is forgotten in the collective memory.

I mean how many Spider-Man reboots are we gonna have? Tom Holland already mentioned that he has doubts doing a 4th Spidey film. But Sony will keep making them regardless of who stars in them. Because if they don't they'll lose the rights to Spider-Man.
