In today's video, I'll look back at the history of Darth Vader's voice, play you what the original Darth Vader voice sounded like on set, and explore the legacy of James Earl Jones as Vader.

For me the sound of him breathing is one of the most iconic sounds in movie history. In Rebel One before you see Vader or his lightsaber you hear the breath, and you know that every rebel trooper in that corridor is now dead. He recognised Prowse had done the acting on-set, interacted with the cast, with all that demanding physicality and discomfort in full costume, and that DP deserved credit for that. Ben Burtt is possibly the most underappreciated member of the team that gave us the original Star Wars film. "I find your lack of faith disturbing." I always pictured that line delivered with a smirk, which is what's brilliant about the fact that Vader is masked; you don't really know what his exact emotions are, and unless they are in extremes, you are left ambivalent as to his intentions. Similarly to the line "We would be honored, if you would join us." Which I also cannot help but picture a smirk.

I feel like Vader might actually believe what he's saying. He was never a calculatingly intelligent man so it totally makes sense to me he'd be angry at the young officer's lack of faith, or was seriously inviting Luke to 'join us'. One of the interesting things about Vader's mechanical breathing is that it can be heard under his dialogue, as if his speech and his breathing were disconnected. This reinforces the artificial nature of his sound. It also maintains the same steady rhythm, whether or not he is exerting himself.

The "tone, inflection, timbre, and cadence" of Darth Vader's voice and speech is a reflection of the great acting ability of one James Earl Jones. Many things have been noted about the "Star Wars" films, but of all that has been reflected upon, it is "THE VOICE" of DARTH VADER that singularly stands alone as being MOST memorable. Mr Jones IS Vader. The voice makes the character. Best quote for me has always been: "I find your lack of faith... disturbing." Said with Spartan subtlety and menace - it sums up the character completely. He is bereft to the point that all he has left is his devotion to the force and he stands within it like it is a fortress. That is a sophisticated piece of characterisation that can only be delivered by just the right voice. THAT voice.

I'm guessing that was the time recording, or possibly auditioning. Not including the networking, the understanding that a deeper fuller voice performance would enhance the character, possible rewrites to better fit Jones' performance (if there were any), the audio effects, etc. The 2.5 hours were likely the pivotal moment, sure. But there was a lot more going on both before and after to bring the voice fully to life and screen.

If it wasn't for James Earl Jones's voice, David Prowse's body language, George Lucas's script, and Ben Burtt's sound design, we wouldn't have Darth Vader at all today. Everybody is always making fun of how Hayden delivered his lines so flat, but I really do think he's doing that purposefully and perfectly. Listen to how he delivers his lines in the movies vs in real life. When he's playing Anakin you can hear this distinct drawl that is very akin to James Earl Jones'. Such as the lines "You will try" or "My powers have doubled since the last time we met Count".

No no that explanation won't do at all. Even if that were the case it is conveyed in such a way that it sounds wooden rather than deliberately evocative of JEJ. It's Lucas fault for the script Hayden probably didn't know how to read them. A colder voice would've gone down better for the movie.
@absolutezero523
@absolutezero523 Год назад
@@JacenSolo0 he gets the colder voice from the mask (lore-wise) and also Anakin wasn't evil at that point, he just talked with the same drawl as JEJ, which was flat. @@absolutezero523 Then why is it by the end of his life he retains the sharp,clipped vocals when he is unmasked ? If that's what Hayden Christensen was going for I.e. imitating the monotone nature of Vader then he really didn't get it very well at all. Would've been better if he tried to soften out his American accent and obviously Lucas should have given him lines more suitable for someone who's transitioning into Darth Vader. Not quite sure what you mean by drawl. I don't think JEJ had any particular drawl and it certainly wasn't like Anakin's.
