I’ve had an RG470 since 1998. It’s always been a comfortable and reliable guitar. I fell in love with the Wizard II neck immediately. When the EVH drop-D tuner debuted, I seriously considered swapping my low-pro Floyd Rose for one like my brother’s Jackson. Looking back, I’m glad I never did that.

Spot on information! I learned a few things about a couple of the Trems I haven't owned (e.g. Edge Pro II and Edge III). Basically, you can't go wrong with the high end Edge models. They're all brilliant. Of the Lo Pro & OG Edge, I like the Lo Pro just a touch more. Glad you decided to cover the Edge Zero/EZ II in another video, as they're descendents of another of my faves, the ZR (Zero Resistance) Tremolo. The SynchroniZR is pretty cool too! 👍

Great video. I'm an Ibanez player and it still confuses me. Nice to see them sorted out. Can't wait to see your video on the Zero Edges. The saddle design (w/ built in intonation) and lack of span at the rear of the bridge was brilliant. Keep up the good work.

Great video, easy to understand, very detailed and informative of the different variations, I was unaware there were clones and re-releases of the original Tremolo's. I own four Ibanez guitars, a JS1000 BTB with the Cosmo Black Lo-Pro Edge, an Ibanez Premium RG870QMZ with the Cosmo Black Edge-Zero II, an S-Series S770PB with the ZR Tremolo and the Ibanez RG7620 with the Lo-Pro Edge 7. They've all worked flawlessly and I've not had any issues with any of them going out of tune, the only downside is the common wear and tear they go through as it's noticeable that some metal parts of the tremolo's fall victim to rust quicker than others. The most frustrating thing for me is finding replacements for these parts that have been tarnished over time as there are almost zero distributors that ship internationally if you're someone who is based outside of the EU like I am in New Zealand. Peace! ! !✌️😎
@Ibbyhead
@Ibbyhead 2 года назад
Yeah, for some models that been phased out (like ZRs) it's getting hard to get parts even in Europe. But I can imagine it gets way harder in NZ or Australia.

Edge Pro for life! My old RG had an Edge Pro II, which is just a slightly cheaper version with material cost concessions such as zinc saddle chips and retainer blocks vs the original's solid ones. Still it was hands down the most well packed feature sets of any standard Ibanez double locking floating bridge out there. The handling and dependability, as well as the convenience of not having to risk losing any tiny chips or cut the ball ends off the strings, just elevate it to the next level.

Throughout my years of playing, I've had all of the three types installed into their corresponding guitar model. Honestly, I was extremely dissatisfied with the Edge Pro due to its intermittent instability in terms of tuning despite the guitar being a prestige. The fretboard was infallibly comfortable though. I've unreasonably discredited the efficiency of the original Edge and proceeded to purchase a 96s Japanese RG with a LO-PRO Edge. It was significantly more stable in comparison to the more modernized Edge Pro which didn't exactly come as a surprise to me since I've always had a predilection towards old hardware and corroborated their reliability. However, I eventually sold the 96's RG and bargained for a 91's RG570 with the rarest finish. I was stupefied at how stable the bridge and tuning was( I'm still using that particular guitar ;), it rarely went out of tune even when I'm playing heavier stuff like Pantera, unlike the aforementioned Edge Pro. I dare to say that Its stability is exceeding this of the LO-PRO edge. Marvelous tremolo. My ranking of the more high-end Ibanez tremolos would be - 1.Original Edge 2.LO-PRO Edge 3.Edge Pro 4.Edge Zero(although it's pretty equal with the Edge Pro) Additionally, I'm slightly curious as to if you wish to make a direct comparison between the Floyd Rose and the Original Edge - and which one do you think it's better?
@Ibbyhead
@Ibbyhead 3 года назад
Thank you for that detailed comment and sharing your experience! Your ranking is aligned with what most people find :) I personally prefer Lo-Pro because of the lower profile, and I like how Edge Pro feels under palm but in terms of stability I think your rating is spot-on. I'd love to make that comparison and there's a chance I'll have a guitar with Original Floyd Rose joining my stable soon, so that will become possible. I'm curious myself!

@Ibbyhead

@@deftartisan6769 I don't have one favourite :D I really dig my Korean RG370B, it's nicely worn in, and I made some upgrades to it. I generally like thicker neck profiles like Wizard II or Ultra and double humbucker or HS configuration. I recently have a lot of fun with RG465 although it has Edge III term which is suboptimal. I really really like the MMM1, but it's a bit oddball. RGT2020/3020/3120 are ones I'm hunting for as I feel those would work for me really nicely.

My first Ibanez had an Edge 3 bridge. It's okay as long as it's blocked. Once you float it, your tuning stability goes out the window lol. Currently, I use the Edge Pro and Edge bridges on my guitars. I have a RG550 which came stock with the Edge, and I have an STM2 which came with an Edge 3, but I upgraded the studs and bridge to Edge Pro. On the Edge Pro, I prefer to have it blocked because I experienced tuning instability when floating it, but as a diving bridge, it was amazing. Most people don't know this but the Edge Pro has a even lower profile than the LoPro Edge. I found it super comfortable to use. The Edge on my RG550 is fully floating, but we'll see how long that lasts, I'm starting to get sick of floating tremolos. Awesome video, thanks for the information. I also wanted to try out the ZR bridge, which is pretty much the Edge Zero, but instead of knife edges, it pivots on ball bearings. It must be super smooth.
@These_go_to_eleven_1959
@These_go_to_eleven_1959 4 месяца назад
I use a EDGE III on my RG 350MDX and it is set for floating and it stays in just as good as my old RG with a original EDGE? I have used this EDGE III for over 7 years now. Not sure of what you did different but the EDGE III will operate as a floating trem no problem. and yes it does the flutter effect/
@neto9217
@neto9217 4 месяца назад
Wow, you must have the exception LOL. I think it really comes down to how you use the trem and the setup of it. I am a bit more extreme so something like the Edge III does not keep up with how I play. I'm genuinely surprised yours lasted this long. Most people that have the Edge III tend to absolutely hate it because of how soft the knife edges are. For me, I really hate how rough the fine tuners feel when trying to use them. The Edge and Edge Pro fine tuners are smooth as butter. @@These_go_to_eleven_1959

Edge Pro Zero ll ( non ZR system). Had the edge lll in my RG dx4 I owned seven years ago. Though it was a great guitar for the money , I had a lot of tuning issues with it from the beginning. It was setup and if I needed a string change I took it to my guitar teacher at the time. He’s notorious for getting any floating bridge just right for anyone who had a floating tremolo. The more songs and licks I learned , the more tune sensitive I became. So I sold it and bought a Ibanez S520. At first I experienced the same issues I was having with my RG until I took it to my guitar teacher and seven years later it’s like driving a sports car. The only issues I have with it so far on occasion is weather. In Des Moines Iowa it gets extremely humid in summer and early fall. Winter is extremely dry during the winter so it can cause tremolo or truss rod issues as well. As long as I take it to a trusted technician it will stay in tune. I normally tune it right before or after playing , maybe one to two times if not at all on average. I’m planning to invest in the Schaller Claw and Ibanez bridge parts upgrade. Of the two guitars I currently have and the eight I’ve owned in a twenty three year span, this guitar and tremolo has treated me right.

Imho the 'screw in the back' problem can be mitigated with unscrewing it and placing a tiny 1-2mm teflon rod (smaller than a diameter of the hole) first, then screw it back. First, it will not damage the crank, secondly it can be replaced as worn.

Thank you to review the Ibanez bridge, as I know they developed with Gotoh. By the way, Lo pro edge 7 string is my favorite, in terms of looking and stability but stability to stay in tune, maybe better, however the problem is the arm bar which never stays tight even changing the white little plastic ring, I watched a video in which a guy changed the complete arm and socket by an original arm bar plus socket floyd rose and worked great as original floyd. Second up grade I would change the block by a fu tone brass block and the springs by the red ones, even though with the ibanez block has already good sustain but I feel it lacks of tightness and stability.

I'm down with the low pro edge as well, better for palm muting and raising notes with my palm. Another reason that I never understood is that my Jem 777 edge had little square pieces under the saddles so you could get a bad saddle insert out by poking it through but these pieces got lost and didn't stay on. I never understood how they were even supposed to stay on and it was more difficult to line up the saddle insert with the saddle string lock screws while these little saddle insert holding plates were not there. Only problem now is it's almost impossible to get a bad saddle insert out of a saddle. Lol Hey man thanks for the history lesson and I say we have similar taste . Great video 👍

bushing hack : use cigarette lighter to burn/heat up the bushing for around 2 seconds, bushing should expand a bit to have more firm grip when popping in into the arm slot. i did this all the time and it works like a charm 😊

Question: Do the knife edge spacing's change with each generation of bridges or are they all the same? I would love to go to a floyd rose or a higher end ibanez but if its 1mm off one would have to dowel and redrill everything and I would be better off getting a charvel.
@Ibbyhead
@Ibbyhead 3 года назад
Not all of them have the same spacing so you'd have to check on specific bridges you want to swap. I know for example, that Edge Zeros have different spacing than most of the Edge family.

As someone who owns an RGD2127z and S7420QM and absolutely loves the edge zero and ZR trems on these two guitars it'd be really cool to see that followup so people can learn a bit more about these two trems, especially the ZR because they both kinda get a bad wrap due to the ZPS system. I actually feel that my edge zero and ZR actually perform BETTER than my lo pro edges, specifically the ZR. Easily the best feeling and most stable tremolo I've ever used and it really makes me sad that they're just gone due to apparently patent claims from the guy associated with Coherent Sound In Light.

Interesting note about the Edge Pro - the "sound chips" are the same size as the LR Baggs piezo saddle inserts, and the block underneath has two threaded holes in it. These holes line up with a particular LR Baggs PCB and it also has slots in the top of the block to feed the wires from the piezo saddles to the PCB. So a regular Edge Pro can "easily" be retrofitted with the LR Baggs system to turn it into a Double Edge Pro.

Thanks for a great video, very easy to follow/understand the different versions. :) Also, if I ever ponder getting another guitar with a floating bridge, I'll do my research first and avoid the low-end versions for sure. Can't give you my opinion on different bridges since I have only one and have some troubles with it - maybe you can help me? I had it set up by a local guitar tech but I'm not entirely convinced it's completely in the right angle. It's the second setup for it (the original seller "set it up" for me but it was a completely messy setup (f.e. twisted neck, it's quite appalling since he has a legit business doing guitar setups...!)) It's an old Lo-Pro Edge (2001, I just bought it so don't know the history of this guitar but I believe it's the original bridge but it's a bit hard to find exact info on this guitar since for some reason you can't find it on Ibanez Wiki or anywhere else, really, I believe the model is RG550EXL (lefty version of RG550EX). (Same finish (galaxy black, same mirrored pickguard, same inlays, produced in the same time period as the right-handed version) but it seems the right-handed has a different bridge (Edge. That's what the Wiki says).) I'm not sure if the angle it was set up with is entirely correct - according to what I found elsewhere, the knife edge in a properly set up bridge should look completely parallel to the body - well it's not on mine. It's angled a bit downwards (if looking from the side, downwards towards the back side/fine tuners). I can send a pic if needed (where?). I'd really appreciate some help, so I can be sure it's correct, so the tuning stability is as good as I can get from it. Or if the angle is actually correct, then I can go on ruling out other possible issues regarding tuning stability.

@@Ibbyhead It was new though as in, I bought it straight from the music store I worked at, first run as they were first being shipped late 1990 actually. So no time for it to be swapped, no other owner or I'd have assumed the same. I know it's lineage from the day it was out of factory box.

I guess there wasn't a clear-cut date between one spec and other, especially that those parts are very exchange'able. It's pretty common that next year models already have previous year serial numbers. And especially back then, the cut-off dates weren't probably very solid. In modern guitars you can see a concept of version of model (they're stamped on the headstock, for example "1P02" being version 2) and then the specs are probably more controlled. Thanks for sharing, that's very interesting :)

You really know your tremolo's 😎 I just got my first guitar with double locking tremolo, the Lo Pro Edge. Nothing in the manual about it which was annoying but thanks to you, I now know it's sitting correctly. I was wondering which part had to be level with the body. Wish I'd stretched the strings more in the shop though as I'm going to have to undo the locking nut soon as I'm running out of room on the fine tuners. Question: does it matter what order you tune the strings. I've been going from low to high E and by the time I get to the high E, the low E, A and D strings have gone slightly flat again.
@Ibbyhead
@Ibbyhead 3 года назад
I tend to go from low E also, as this one has the highet tension. It's inevitable, that others will slightly go out of tune, you have to go through it few times. Just a balancing act until you find that spot :)
@iduncanw
@iduncanw 3 года назад
@@Ibbyhead thanks, I had a go just recently. I balanced out the fine tuners, undid the locking nut and gradually tuned from low E. It took a while, but happy with the results.
@junkbox_
@junkbox_ 2 года назад
It is annoying to go through it a few times but that is just the way floating trems go. You need to level the lowest and continuous bottom edge of the bridge and have it be parallel with the top surface of the guitar body. The bottom edge of the bridge should match the guitar's surface. Getting that right is the hardest task.
