This film is based on the manga "All you need is kill". And manga is much more... Darker tbh. And I like both. www.imdb.com/ti... Credits goes to: Warner Bros., Village Roadshow Pictures, RatPac-Dune Entertainment. Monetized by owner/s.
It was a good idea not greatly interpreted the ending and cg quality could have been a part of it , but I still think a sequel could be made without Tom form a different point of view such as a little known human group not attacked but living co habitually such as a sysmpyosis with a lead alien
Should have gone with "I have been ordered to do an interview with you about your battle at Verdun. Would this afternoon be good for you?" (after she agrees) "Thank you Rose". Her eyes widen as she realizes the only way he could know her middle name
One of the most satisfying endings I've ever seen. That smile was priceless. This is exactly how I felt after watching this movie. The whole movie was fun, so engaging, and action-packed. No wonder this will become a classic among action/sci-fi films.
Max Eisenhardt I just finished watching Edge of Tomorrow, it was great. Then I watched it again right away because the ending is not at the end, its at the beginning. The big blue guy gets his revenge and keeps Tom Cruise in a permanenr loop.
Sad part is that basically no one will understand how much he had sacrificed for the world by quite literally dying thousands of times for the sake of humanity.
I respectfully disagree, this movie was garbage, proof that fancy effects won't save you from people noticing the giant plot holes and the absolute rip-off of Groundhog Day.
Plot holes aside, any movie includes the character re-living each day is a rip off of Groundhog Day? The movies are completely different in the use of that element. Groundhog Day has Murray just becoming a better/nicer individual and then he just wakes up one day and he's living a normal life again. This movie has the character actually defeating the mechanism that created the re-runs. Critical thinking dude. Get some.
the funny thing is that is actually happened in the manga Cruise waked up after killing the Alpha and it's just normal replay And in order to really end the circle, Cruise had to kill Vrita ( the other one who has the ability, just in the manga, in the film she has losted it ) to end the circle AND he got to keep his ability to continue fighting for the world
I actually cried in the ending. It was so well tied together, you can feel the emotion Tom had when he found out the love of his life is alive and he can go on and possibly have a life with her. Great movie.
Yeah, but you can still see her respecting the rank in a subtle way. When he’s a private, she’s cold and dismissive toward him because she outranks him. Now he outranks her and she’s questioning and curious, though still rude in her own way.
Im so glad Rita is still alive, shes probably the literally only person who could fully sympathize with him. The squad is still alive and fucking around but you'll probably never be able to remake that death-bond comrade level of friendship.
Its a perfect ending because it leaves you wanting more. Everybody wants to see cage and rita share a moment of success. Probably in Edge of tomorrow 2 - Return of the Mimics
This movie is probably the only movie where I felt like I didn't need a sequel. It's just...perfect and fulfilling. I feel there isn't much left to explain or show off
I just realised; Going into battle Rita Vrataski was well aware that the mimics would know they were coming due to time reversion, and that she would almost certainly die. She willingly walked into a deathtrap without flinching. That is some special kind of badass.
I don’t think that’s 100% accurate - only after she found out about cage and that the invasion is a total devastation she realizes that the successful battle of Verdun was merely a trap leading toward the “end game” of humankind.
Were you even paying attention ehong? Rita wasn't some kind of elite soldier, she had that time reversion herself for verdun. Losing the power means the aliens had them back, so yes every battle after verdun just means losing battle and she knows it.
Never in a million years would I have imagined this manga/light novel would get a movie adaptation and have Tom Cruise star in it. And if you told me that beforehand I would have predicted it would be terrible. Instead it's classic! I wouldn't have thought Tom Cruise would take on a role like this, but it turned out wonderfully.
I will say though, the manga/light novel was a lot bleaker than the happy ending this movie got, but it makes sense considering that in a Hollywood film, everybody loves a happy ending
Owen B. Oh definitely. It gives the right “emotional kick” and makes you reminiscent on the movie because the song’s tunes and vocals just scream nostalgia.
It’s pretty symbolic with how everyone saluted him at the end while before they didn’t bat an eye on him. They did it because he’s a major, but narratively, if you look behind it, it’s basically because he fought multiple battles and saved the world. In the beginning, his title was just a title that even the general didn’t respect him with, but now he has EARNED that title, like someone who has returned from a long war as a hero. EDIT: Some people are not understanding it here, but I’m saying that this scene is a narrative symbolism. It’s meant for us to interpret it, not the characters to be aware of it.
@@jrsthesedays925 Thats not a basis for disrespect. i never had disrespect from my superiors (not based on my rank that is :D ) The general did not respect the "Television Soldier" what Cage was. Field officers tend to have a little less respect towards those who sit behind the safety of their desks / or camera while them and their soldiers are putting their lives at risk every day, every hour. add that Cage was pretty arrogant and he did not help his case when he wanted to blackmail the general. I am sure if he would turn up in the General's office "now", he would still not respect him, because Major Cage was a TV celebrity and he arrived when there is no longer a risk. (obviously the General has no recollection of memories of the "previous" encounters (which were in the future?!)) No, a General wont disrespect a Major just because one outranks the other. but Cage was a puppet a highly decorated TV commentator. :) a sales person :) (no offence towards sales people, but you get the point)
No, it's because he looped back to before he ticked off the general and got sent to the front line to get killed and start the looping. Those grunts merely saw the rank device and showed the usual deference on that alone.
The worst part about tom's ordeal was that no one would ever know he went through all that and saved the world. Theyd probably still think he was an armchair major
It doesn't matter to him now, he lives and he knows the most important person to him will believe in his story... And he still can kick the ass out of any guy who questions his skill
Let me explain the ending to those who don't understand. Tom Cruise is the only one who knows he and the Full Metal B**** ended the war. Everyone else thinks it was a joint effort. Cruise smiles in the end when she greets him rudely like she did the first time he met her because now he has to explain to her that they single handedly ended the war by themselves. The movie implies she will believe him because he already knows she had the reset power In the battle she helped win, and knows about it already. The only question we are left with though, is will she love him back when he tells her they fell in love during their journey. This movie was too good. RIP Bill Paxton :(
But that isn't the real question though, the real question is: why did the day reset when the omega blood touched Tom, Tom got a new life and the omega didn't?
the blood killed him but the omega wasnt dead so there was a split in the timeline. The omega survived in another timeline so no reset in that timeline but the split timeline reset and thats now Cage's.
@djhavok101 Well that is one way to explain it, but it still bugs me somehow. Why does the aliens who can travel space and time (an other dimensional being) want something from human? Why can't they just travel to a specific time to attack Earth or try and rewind time over and over until they win? And an other Omega just make the whole plot messed up.
@djhavok101 I think that the time rewinding ability is something the alien can't actively control. It is only activated when some condition is met (like a life threatening situation). The alien fully aware of this and they make use of their "built-in" ability as a hunting mechanism to get to know their prey then attack. At the end of the movie, Cage regains this ability right before he die, and somehow twisted it a little since his death is a slow death and "natural", not a swift one as a hunted prey like before. Thus, he affected this mechanism and messed with the time line a bit as the general mentioned the explosion in France and the death of the Omega in the past which happen in an alternated present.
its actually a bad ending because he will relive life from that point forever having to relive everyting.. again and again and again.. and everyone around you wont remember a single thing everytime
Not sure if you've actually seen the movie or what but he won't be reliving anything from that point on since the "creature" has been killed and that was the last time repeat that's going to happen.
Master Penguin Actually as the other guy said that's the last time loop that he's on, this is it. It's only a downer if you assume he fucks up somehow and doesn't get with her. I like to assume Cruise gets laid again.
@@pk.002 They're fucking nothing like each other to begin with. Literally the only three similarities are exoskeletons, alien invasion and Time loop. That's where it ends.
its incredible how his eyes say everything with them tears. Like if you watch the movie you know exactly what he feels like and thats pure happiness and sadness toghether
This smile has all in it. - He smiles, because she is she, and so she is rude to him, his range is nothing for she. - He smiles, because he knows what she doesn't know in this moment: That they will come together, after he will told her the solution, they gained together. - He smiles, because he loves her. And he is glad, she lives. And so many more. This smile has all. It explains the whole film. Top on point. Priceless.
I doubt they would have come together... Imagine how weird his stories might sound "The energy impulse, that killed the mimics... That was us!" She would not believe him
If he still had ANY trace of alien blood in his body, this 'could' happen. WOW. imagine being an old man and on your deathbed, awakening back to the day when you were young and the war was ending. I figure that one last time would be the last 'reincarnation' but it would be fascinating to see. :)
I think she still has it. He's in his uniform, since the ending is her first time seeing him wearing one, she's suppose to stand at attention and salute the rank, instead, she greeted him as she did before. Hence his smile.
She doesn't remember she's already lost it by this point in time. He's still got the power though, he lost the power from the Alpha from the blood transfusion but gained the power from the Omega in the ending right there.
Doug Liman is a genius director, and he really knows how to end a film. Compare this with the ending scene of the Bourne Identity, it’s a similar feeling, even down to the same font in the credits!
@@chaptereight3406 Firstly, there's no such a thing called alfa and omega in manga (if im not wrong) but instead the main character able to back from death because there's such a thing called server. So in the manga, the mc didn't stop his back from death ability by killing the omega (I forgot which one from the movie) but he stop it by killing rita. So the manga ended up with rita's dead and the humans suddenly manage to win from he alien (mimic)
Liman is still the best director for the Bourne series. His movie (the first one) has more 'identity' (no pun intended) compared to Greengrass's films. Better pacing, deeper, more grounded, more emotional, and has the better storytelling. Perfect balance of story and action.
It's tragic how this film didn't reap in the epic pile of money. It's so good, entertaining, thoughtful, well produced, well acted, yet it barely raked in the cash.
I didn't have an idea this movie existed before, I just stumbled on it and decided to watch it. No expectations whatsoever, took me by surprise of how awesome it was. Wish I could forget everything about it and watch it again. Such an awesome and underrated movie. Just last month, I let my girlfriend watch it for the first time. Kinda funny she loved it so much, especially the ending.
Yeah I only got to watch it yesterday after reading some random tips on the tv shows of the day on an italian e-journal. Never heard of it before, and I don't live outside the world... weird.
One of the most iconic credit transitions ever. It's been stuck in my head for years, now. The silence, then the sudden cut to a passionate song. Every time a movie fades out, this is the song I hear in my head.
A missed opportunity: "I’m here to tell you a story, Sergeant, and at first it’s gonna sound ridiculous, but the longer I talk the more rational it’s going to appear."
It wouldn't take long for her to understand it at all, considering how many times she relived one day over and over herself to become the Angel of Verdun.
@@atticstattic I saw the movie in theaters so I do recall that's how he talks to the stubborn general. My guess is that the Angel of Verdun would catch up very quickly. Such knowledge would introduce strategies and tactics that most commanders could never imagine.
@@atticstattic i dont think he missed any points at all. She still has the knowledge of when she had the "power" so that line would only work on someone that has no knowledge of what they experienced. hence, used on the general but completely irrelevant when talking to her (or the mechanic/former biotech guy)
As someone who watch and read a lot of alternate horror: Here's the _horror_ twist you can have: _Every time he dies - old age, accidents, the war - it NEVER stops and he has to do it all again for eternity_
Re Zero had a different approach. Every time the main character died, the world still continued. In one scene, we see how much he fucked up the world and characters with his deaths and reckless suicides
@@naiknaik8812 The reset is mostly moving the character to another timeline instead going back in their own time. I can already feel the headache how the Universal storage (think reality like a computer) is bloated a lot of data from this broken timelines.
This is probably the best Sci-fi I've since the Matrix. Although I thought Oblivion was pretty good this movie was far better. I'm really hoping a sequel will be out in the next year or so.
Took my wife for the movie...she was complaining and threatening me if it was one of 'my kind' of action movie she will divorce me...she was smiling after the movie... The movie is really underrated.
@@iaani_ I can see your point, but I think the ending works because it's ambiguous BUT it hints that Tom's character will be able to reconnect with her with all the things he knows about her - there's *hope* It's purposefully left up to the imagination of the viewer
Tom Cruise is such a magnificent actor that you can see in this scene how different his attitude is in his face and eyes compared to the first scene where he looks like a playboy coming from a party in this scene you can see in him the transformation that was produced in him through the crucible of battle and his hardening as a true veteran
@@keylock1897 this movie is based *on* the manga haha, it wouldn't have existed without it. It's called "All you need is kill". I personally liked aspects from both the manga and the movie, both were great
One of the most interesting adaptations to a manga I had ever seen. The manga in questions is “All you need is Kill” and this movie did a petty good representation of the manga, not 100% faithful as after reading the manga is had a sad ending to this good/neutral one presented but its criminally underrated since it does so well.
@@rizon72 Not likely, I agree with you on that. Its like making Akame Ga Kill into a movie, youd have to fundamentally change all of it to make it work with a good ending not a bad ending.
When he was arrested he was stripped of all rank. Anyone stripped of rank can only be the lowest private (not even a Private first class) or a deserter or prisoner forced to fight, either way it's not someone you respect. Now that he has all of his rank clearly visible, I love the fact that all the enlisted men have to stand at attention when he enters the room. :D
@@Frankie2012channel And he does not dismiss them with "at ease" but goes on his merry way to find her. Guess going through hell a thousand times earn you that.
The ending is just something else, totally took the movie to a whole new level. One hellava movie, so underrated. The relationship between tom and emily is just amazing
Without a doubt the most underrated movie I’ve watched. I always find myself rewatching it every 6 months. Probably my all time favorite if I had to choose.
That smile says everything - the rude response from her is funny at this point, he gets to see her again, and it will be so easy to convince her of everything.
I loved this film. One of the more pleasant sci-fi gems in the last decade. Say what you want about Cruise personally.....the man makes damn good movies!
"Russian and Chinese troops are moving across Europe without resistance..." Ummm...yeah it's not supposed to be, but to me that is the scariest line in the whole movie.
One of my favourite, sci-fi films and one of the best "epilogue" endings too. Even the final cut to the credits and the accompanying song are just perfect! Definitely in my Top Ten. Doug Liman knocked this one out of the park.
I like how the music is epic and they all stand in attention for Cage. Even though they may not know it, unlike in the beginning of the movie he is now a full fledged war hero and completely deserving of his rank.
They should have filmed a humorous alternate ending where he does the same smile right before one of those spin blades takes him out ➡️ pan to credits.
This was arguably, the most emotionally satisfying ending I have watched in my 48 years of being on this glorious planet. Tied with the ending to Shawshank Redemption for emotional impact, in my opinion.
@@Fishfingers232 Your idea of war heroism is a bit lopsided. Everyone on active duty is a hero. Anyone who has done what she had (if that was even possible) is even more so. But, rank is rank. An essential part of understanding the value of a rank is recognizing that you could be great at something and someone who outranks you maybe not - you cuss about it in private, among friends. But when that senior officer outranking you shows up... especially in a military base, IN official capacity, you show respect. In the field, during an active firefight, you might forget or be unable to spend the extra few seconds to show paper respect (calling the person with higher rank sir/ma'am, etc.), and that is generally not taken into account all that much. I don't know if you've served, and I am not very familiar with US armed service norms if that's where you served, but from my personal experience - it is important to respect the rank. There is also the matter of having operational command authorization - if you are the highest-ranking officer/soldier on the ground at any point of time, it is your duty to act as temporary command unless there is an established comms with HQ/anyone else that has ground command clearance (weird shit) and they mention otherwise. Similarly, if you are anyone who finds themselves in the company of a higher ranking officer who has assumed official capacity, it is your duty to respect and follow orders that they provide.
When he was covered in the first Alpha's blood on the battlefield, he went back 24 hours, which was when he was waking up and getting called a maggot. However, when he was covered in the second Alpha's blood, this was half a day before the battlefield assault took place, so he was taken back 24 hours from his final death, which was half a day before he woke up and was being called a maggot. I think he's still an Alpha, not an Omega. The only difference is that his reset point is earlier than before because he was covered in the second Alpha's blood a little earlier than when he was covered in the first Alpha's blood. Presumably, because the Omega is now dead and he's an Alpha, he basically has immortality without the threat of the Omega. Loved this movie.
I'm so glad this movie passed under my radar. Was actually exciting to watch and I didn't know anything about it prior to watching. Really looking forward to the sequel.
I watched it a year after it was released due to not too glowing reviews. Then I thought a Tom Cruise movie rarely disappoints performance wise and wow..what a movie. Tom is one of very few actors who can carry the whole film and make it his. His charisma on the silver screen is simply phenomenal.
Man this movie was LIT! The ending hit me to the core and I remember, I spent almost 2 hours overthinking how's he gonna tell her about what the fuck happened
Loved this movie. Not overly complicated, tells a story from start to an actual end, great perfomances from the actors and the action is awesome. Its a great movie.
@@hattaamran7348 Its blood is on Cage. Similar when he rechive Alpha's blood. Look at the ending scene. Same but different situation. Same Alien invation. Humen on the winning side. Just because no one controling the Mimics. Correction. Not no one. Not because no Omega. But Cage/Omega did not control the Mimics. Cage enter the Alternate Universe.
This movie was one of the best i've s een, I watched it the other day and I was amazed at the story, acting, fight scenes. The ending made it all the more memorable. When you saw him die at the end knowing he doesn't have the power to go back in time anymore you felt sad that he died a hero's death and no one would know. Then he wakes up again before he got stripped and sent to die with new recruits to the find the women he fell in love with knowing they can be together now. how epic was that... a love story / aci fi / military action movie all combined to be amazing.
After watching this last scene, I just figured out how the Omega knew they were going to storm the beach... The General just announced it on world-wide television for goodness sake.
So if he's the Omega now, when he inevitably dies of even just old age, he's going to be resetting time to the day before he died.....forever.....effectively forcing the universe to stop and repeat that day over and over.
Nobody knows. The omega, with the mimics and all was an organism where these "time loops" was part of it like talking is for us. I mean Tom here was merely using the power of the omega because something in it's blood made us part of the organism, like a parasite. But now that it's dead and Tom has become the Omega, does that mean he will reincarnate? Personally, I don't think so, because he doesn't know how to.
@@GenJouh Imo he is an immortal, but he can opt to die by having somebody drain out the blood from the alien creature that is in his body, and then he becomes normal human again that can die permanently.
Not all europeans entirely. If you observe situation forces map, in the Iberian Peninsula there are troops from Brazil , France and Spain of course. I would say that waiting at the Central System (Cordillera Central).
Seen this movie about 4-5 times now (just finished watching it again) and i still enjoy watching it. One of the best movie I've seen in along time.... and because of emily blunt.
Well in this World Humanity is United against aliens,i Think that the first thing They Gonna do is Form a Global Union and Clear the solar System just in case
2:25. Cruise's Major breaths deep and sighs at the sight of his comrades. The one's who sacrificed everything to make sure he completed the mission and broke the time loop. They're alive and safe.
First time watching this movie, and it was brilliant! It's just depressing how even at the end, Cage and Rita were the true heroes, but almost no one will recognize what they did to save humanity. At least we still get a heart-warming ending.
