I was part of that crowd that didnt watch it in theaters cuz it wasn't getting enough traction on its release. And I didnt want to "waste" my time. One of the biggest movie watching regrets to date. If I fell in love with this movie renting it on RU-vid. I would love to see this movie for the first time in a theater. Jealous of you
To be honest... at this point, if Tom is the lead in a movie we should just go watch it. His list of movies cant all be "the greatest" but I can't think of a movie that was a true stinker from him.
Emily Blunt makes the semi-romantic tension of this story work. It's implicitly challenging because her character only ever knows Cage for a day or so at a time, while he is becoming progressively more and more familiar with her. That's what I think she nails in that "parting" scene, is she's been there with Hendricks so she "gets it", and knows that Cage cares for her already, so that "I wish I could have gotten to know you better" really is about as far as she can really come but she does want to come that far
Yes, this is an understated concept in the film. He has spent months (years?) with her under the most intense circumstances of his life. But she has only spent hours with him. It’s a surprisingly deep idea.
@stt5v2002 In one of the trailers, When they're at the helicopter house, he says, _"For me, it's been an eternity"._ He's been through many thousands of replays. (The heliicpter piloting and closed-eyes fight scene alone) would require hundreds of repeats.
I was convinced to go see this because a friend said: you get to watch Tom Cruise get killed over and over again. This, and Tropic Thunder, is where I started liking Tom Cruise in movies again, after he went slightly crazy in the 2000s. Oblivion is one of my favorite movies, now, not so much for the movie, but the environment and atmosphere.
@@carsonmatthews7705 Not so much WotW but definitely the other ones. The Last Samurai is amazing. I enjoy the M:I series as well. His stunt work is phenomenal, even if acting is just 'fine' in those.
It took me a while too. Hated his acting for the longest time. Knight and Day is also another that I like. I think that's more up his alley, where he doesn't try to overdramatize a character.
If you're in the mood for more Tom Cruise and sci-fi I'd recommend Oblivion, also starring Morgan Freeman and Olga Kurylenko. It also has a great music score by M83.
I like how Jen made an effort to avoid learning anything about the film before watching it. She shares her genuine sense of delight and discovery with the audience. A fun reaction!
I walked out of the theater in 2014 with a teenager-level crush on Emily Blunt. Not just because of how badass her character was or how stunning she is but because of the obvious dedication she put into the role. Every movie of hers that I have seen since has only strengthened that. That aside, I do think that the BEST part of this movie is the character played by Bill Paxton. It is absolutely clear that Bill (RIP) had a great time playing the role. Generally, I think everyone looks like they had a great time filming this movie.
Emily Blunt is such a good actress. She submerges herself in her character and makes you believe the stakes are high as hell. For more movies by Blunt you should check out, "Quite Place 1 &2, Adjustment Bureau. Devil Wears Prada, Charlie Wilson's War, Gnomeo and Juliet. She hits the mark everytime.
@@jenmurrayxo She does it in all her roles. She's tender in one scene and kicks ass in the next scene. I think she reflects the modern interpretation of a woman.
Ive read the graphic novel this movie is based on. They changed the ending as it was tragic. Cage must battle the Angel of Verdun for the power, as they you always be an antennae of the enemies eye, and she thinks he does have the chops to keep fighting. Its an incredible fight between the two as they both have blades, buts hes learned how to use and defend the blades from studying her for his "entire life". He kills her, hold her hand... and vows to wear bright colored armor and continue the war in her name... for humanity.
as a big fan of the novel this is based on, this movie hit all the right places and i love it it’s not quite the same and a lot of things were changed to adapt it (some things i didn’t initially agree on, but grew to understand and appreciate), but the core is there and it works extremely well IMO, i am really happy people liked it
It's a pity it didn't do well in the theatres, we may have gotten the prequel with Emily Blunt becoming the Heavy Metal B*tch.....and who knows, we may have gotten a sequel too.
@@paulcurran4786 it's a shame, yeah the novel actually has an entire chapter that paints that backstory, i think they briely touched on it in the movie, albeit it was different (especially cause the rule of how to break it in the first place is different)
This is actually based on a Japanese light novel series called "All You Need Is Kill". What a name. It's one of the best live action films based on an anime/manga/light novel.
I'm surprised that I don't see tons of comments mentioning that this is based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka's novel "All You Need Is Kill" and its manga adaptation. The novel and manga end on a much more pyrrhic note that reflects upon the necessity of sacrifice (very Japanese, that).
Super glad you enjoyed this one. When I first saw this in theaters, that very first time Tom Cruise died really got to me too. Something about that shot was a kind of horror like I had never seen before. "Goosebumps all over," indeed.
Nice reaction Jen. I really miss Bill Paxton. He was never what you would call an "A" list actor, but I enjoyed everything that he did. I worked with a guy that used to work at a hotel in LA and Bill would stay there when he was filming. He said that Bill was super nice and always made time to speak with him.
This movie is fantastic. Its how to do time travel right. Emily Blunt and Cruise are amazing, great chemistry. Plus Bill Paxton just nails his role. This movie is like Ground Hog Day, but action. If you want to watch a chill, feel good comedy Ground Hog Day is it. I saw comment about recommending Oblivion. I concur, its good. Also shoutout to Iceland, it was shot there.
Great reaction. Remember, Cage remembers everything, and Emily remembers when SHE had the vision so once he tells her about it, she'll understand. He has the ace in the hole because he knows everything about her so they can go have coffee and "get to know each other"! Foreshadowing @24:58 You should watch "The Darkest Hour" (2011). Alien invasion set in Russia. Not a Russian movie though, but the backdrop is Russian locations. Creepy and fun.
As mentioned earlier, the screenplay is based on a Japanese Manga call "All You Need Is Kill" ... what is interesting is that the author wrote a forward about the inspiration came from playing a rpg video game. He noticed the 'praise' that some npcs gave him for getting certain tasks completed. He realized that he only got that way by doing some of then over-and-over, and not because he was naturally talented at the game tasks. It inspired him to translate that realization into a story. The director and several actors are still interested in making a sequel (last I knew, anyways).
This concept is delivered so well. How could anyone come away from watching this without being so pumped! One of my faves, glad we got to watch it together. See you on the next one.
I'm like you. I love everything, time travel related and I think you do a fabulous job editing and you're commentary is great. You're insightful to. I've seen you say things so many times ahead of what actually appears in the drama and it's just great. It's fun to spend some time with you and not have to watch the whole movie. You do a great job editing! Thanks so much for all you do and for sharing!
Great reaction. This movie did a good job of bringing some "hard" sci-fi elements to the big screen. It was a well done film. It was more like watching Robert Heinlein's Starship Trooper than the actual movie was.
Those military exoskeletons in the movie are very similar to the prototypes that various military contractors have been working on for a decade or so. Afaik they're still a long way from being ready for actual use. It seems military research is focusing on unmanned war/battle technologies; we already have advanced drones and small robots for bomb disposal and other tasks. We're going to see more of that stuff become more common. I guess it's a good thing since it puts less soldiers in harms way.
I'm new here, and I loved this reaction and cannot wait to watch more of your stuff Jen! I do have to say that I was surprised that you went with "really liked" because it sounded like you were loving the movie the whole time, so I was expecting you to say "I loved it!!!" at the end... But anyway, I highly recommend watching this movie again, because it gets better with repeat viewings! Cheers!
This is one of my all time favorite movies and one of my all time favorite channels. I’m really enjoying watching you grow! I remember seeing this in theaters without knowing anything about the movie or it’s source material (a manga called all you need is kill - way different ending). It was a huge surprise and I thoroughly loved it. Watching Tom essentially play a coward turning into a hero was a ton of fun! Glad you loved it!
Jen! I was enjoying watching your "...gosh, what's going to happen now?..." facial expressions. Heck of a ride, wasn't it? What a great surprise, you doing this one. Not much going on today, but Jen's doing one of the best movies I ever saw. Made my day!!! :)
I love this movie Jen it was so fun to see your excitement and how quickly you got drawn into the story. You clearly were invested in the characters. Jen at 15:30 "Are they going to fall in love? Is that to much to ask for in this kind of movie" 12 seconds later Jen "Kiss her" That was great I hope you react to 2013 Oblivion If you haven't seen it.
I LOVE this movie. So glad you did too. Again, really great to see you react so perfectly at all the right moments. I always enjoy how you speak your thought processes out loud as you try and make sense of what you're watching. These moments are just as valuable as your big shock moments.
Edge of Tomorrow is indeed an awesome film Jen so you are choosing extremely wisely when it comes to your movie watching palette. Kudos to you on that. I have high hopes you aren't going to freak yourself out with anything graphic in the near future. Stay the course
There are concepts for suits close to that. Nowhere near this cool though. Some suits like that have just become available to help people in factories move heavy boxes.
How can you not love a time-loop movie like this? It's so awesoomme! Edge of Tomorow is probably one of my favorites! Thanks for watching this Jen! :D Can't wait for you to watch Terminator 1 and Terminator 2 at some point :)
Imagine if in his vision he just saw a field of wheat. Good luck figuring out where the Omega is from that. Seeing the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre is the equivalent of everybody saying that in a past life they were a famous person instead of some peasant that was worked into the ground.
Because this movie was based off a Japanese Light Novel called "All You Need Is Kill", technically it is the best western adaptation of Japanese source material.
Just woke up and put this on and loved it .....Just woke up and put this on and loved it ......Just woke up and put this on and loved it .....Just woke up and put this on and loved it .....Just woke up and put this on and loved it .....Just woke up and put this on and loved it .....Just woke up and put this on and loved it .... I really do like groundhog day movies and this was awesome such a cool concept 👌 fantastic reaction Jen makes me wanna watch your full reaction actually which I shall do at some point for definite . Thanks Jen for another fun time have yourself a wonderful day
The rollback at the end confused me the first time I saw it too. What happened was he gained the power many hours earlier the second time and so rolled back many hours earlier as well.
Such a great movie. So fun to watch someone that had zero background watch this for the first time. Oblivion is another great Tom Cruise Scifi. A must see.
every time I see the title of that movie my brain does the same thing..... Valky-rie.... Valky-rye.... Valky-rie.... Valky-rah-ha-ha-ha-ha. sorry, if it's contagious, can't help it, cough, cough.
Good recommendation. I've been singing the praises of that movie to whomever will listen (not many). Tom Cruise manages to completely lose his Tom Cruise "thing" in that movie, and for that he should get an honorary Oscar.
Edge of Tomorrow went the modern writing route. No quick uneeded love scene as a nice filler, but i think since mainly men are watching this movie. What plays better than falling in love?. Cruise sacrifices his love for Blunt so she can live. IT's a feeling many people have sacrificing for their families with no fanfare, medals or celebration.
It took me a few viewings to figure out that near the end of the film, he restarts the day 24 hours before killing the Omega, as opposed to 24 hours before killing one of the Alphas in the first instance.... Which makes me wonder that when he eventually dies again, even if it's 30 or 40 years later, would he loop back to that day again when he wakes up in the helicopter??
I just watched Edge of Tomorrow for the first time ever last week and absolutely *loved* it. I already knew going in that it was going to be "Starship Troopers" meets "Groundhog's Day" however what I wasn't expecting was the brilliant performances by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The progression of Cruise's character going from essentially a sleezy used-car salesman to a battle hardened super soldier was fantastic! Once Cruise and Blunt meet and know what they have to do- they attempt to make their way off the beach by trying to remember every single step. But it gets them killed every time because it is IMPOSSIBLE to remember every second of the complete chaos around them that is out to kill them. After an innumerous amount of attempts, Cruise finally gives up believing it is hopeless and goes to the bar for a drink instead of the beach battle- which is why he tells one of the bar patrons he's "usually dead by this time." And shortly after, the aliens have made it across the channel and have reached London. Now Cruise understands the aliens HAVE to be stopped and he is the only one who can do it- so he goes back to training on his own to become the super soldier he needs to be. He and Blunt no longer have to remember what happens next to survive- they are going to just straight up fight their way off the beach because they are "that damn good." Eventually after the helicopter where Blunt is killed one too many times for him to handle Cruise decides to go it without her. He finally believes he can do it himself and she might survive long enough on her own for him to complete the mission. This is the coolest reset jump in the film because even the soldier who kicks him awake every time and calls Cruise a "maggot" looks into his eyes *this time* and realizes Cruise has that "1000 yard stare" of someone who has seen *a lot* of battle. And he goes through the beach battle not giving a sh-t about anything but the Omega objective. By the time he has lost the power and can be killed for real again- he has all the tools and genuine courage necessary. And he actually sacrifices himself to save mankind; something Cruise absolutely NEVER would have done before all this happened. As always I loved your reaction Jen!
I recommend checking out the 'Mission: Impossible' movies for more Tom Cruise goodness. They're really great action/spy movies.

Just so you know Jen... There are these kind of "robot suits" like seen in the movie. They are far less advanced though and very clumsy, so they wouldn't be able to pull basically any of the maneuvers Cruise pulled in the movie just flying around and rotating his body instantaneously to shoot some alien behind him.
Re-watch. 💜 Fab reaction, it was exciting. 😄 I see 'Oblivion' (2013) is recommended in quite a few comments, it really is great. Stunning visuals. It's a Tom Cruise sci-fi, I think it's better than Edge of Tomorrow, much as I like the latter. 5:32 I did a solo parachute jump from 2000 feet once, there was no door at the exit point - just an open space where the door would be. When the plane had reached 2000 feet, you had to slide your ass forward to the exit hatch and sit on its ledge with your legs (from below knees) hanging outside the plane and your hands holding on to each side of the exit hatch. When you got the slap on the back, you were to push yourself out. The parachute opened itself (static line), with a 2nd emergency parachute strapped to your chest. I felt like James Bond. 😎 I did it to try and cure my fear of heights and to impress a girl. The latter worked.
4:25 In science fiction, this 'frame' is called an exoskeleton (meaning skeleton on the outside) and the principle is that it amplifies applied force through a force feedback loop, so it is a force multiplier, making the user 'stronger'. Much less complicated force feedback mechanisms actually exist, but this compound exoskeleton they are wearing is well beyond current technology. In particular the ones in the film run off some kind of moderate sized battery pack and give the current state of that industry, there is no way that a suit like that would function for more than a hand full of minutes at best without a significantly larger pack than would be possible given the available area on the suits in the film. So no, this isn't a thing the military has.
Many military weapons, notably including claymore mines and various rocket propelled projectiles, really do have “this side toward enemy” stamped on them. The most important thing to remember is that the other side of these weapons is also a very risky place to be standing.
Hi Jen. Happy to see you enjoyed this awesome movie. Looking forward to your Rogue One reaction. Have enjoyed all your Star Wars reactions so far. Hope you will watch all the sequels too (Episodes 7-9).
Honestly the end dropped so fast, I really wanted him to get a chance to tell her that she saved the world through him, and they both died but now he's the omega. That's really all I needed...
The various world militaries are currently working on powered exoskeleton. Right now, the US Army is testing the walking portion (hips and legs only) to help soldiers carry their load. So no weapons, arms nor hands yet.
This movie did so many things right. Even though it’s familiar trope, it was handled in a way that the story progressed without feeling repetitive. The aliens were original, not the always classic big head humanoids. And Emily Blunt aka Rita Vrataski - this is how to write badass female character!
Emily Blunt once said that she would never act in a Tom Cruise movie. One reason was all the action scenes. Because of that Cruise went to see her personally and had to convince her to do it.
How fun is that movie eh? Watching it click with you was great, I was doing the same thing the first time watching. Tom Cruise playing against type for the most part, along with more comedy than expected, Blunt being amazing, and many more things. It really was an awesome surprise I remember thinking "this movie has no right to be this good what the hell". Also, the touch of romance that was thrown in (really just a few looks and the goodbye at the end of the final battle) really wasn't planned. They had decided to keep it straight '2 soldiers' and nothing else but when Cruise and Blunt had a nice spark, it was Blunt who actually improvised the kiss at the end. They did a few takes and on the one they ended up using she said she threw it in because it just felt right for the goodbye because there was a little something there along the lines of 'wish I knew you under different circumstances'. As always, great fun watching along.
Great reactions, Jen!👏This movie is great! I actually saw this when I was homeless 8 years ago, along with "Guardians of the Galaxy". Some fun movies during a hard time.
The fun thing about watching the movie without trailers(avoid at all cost, thank you marvel and most studios) is after the movie, you get to watch all the trailers and see what they did and didn't put in the movie
Jen: "He looks as confused as I am." Me: Don't feel bad, Jen. We all felt that way when we saw this movie for the first time. The plot is a mind-blower! :) Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise pair up again for "Oblivion" which you will also really love if you haven't seen it yet.
@@edfrancis66 Oh, this is so embarrassing. You're right. It's Olga Kurylenko who is the female lead in Oblivion. She kind of looks like Emily Blunt, at least in my mind, apparently. Sorry for my confusion, Jen. Regardless, it's still a great Tom Cruise movie. It has so many mind-blowing plot twists.
I wasn't expecting to like this film as much as I did, Cruise seems to play himself in many of his films, but this film, Oblivion and War of the Worlds he plays very flawed or reluctant hero type characters, which made them more enjoyable.

Edge of Tomorrow is a great sci-fi movie! The repeating day is not tiring and every day he is learning something new and useful! Tom Cruise and Emily Blount are great together! Even Mad-eye Moody made an appearance! Haha This movie definitely makes my top sci-fi movies list! Great reaction Jen!❤️💛 Have you watched "Interstellar"? That is also on my top sci-fi movies list! 🛸💫
