In this video I take a leap of faith and attempt to add a second WAN port to be used for a failover ISP. I haven't found any RU-vid videos on this topic and have the need, so I thought I would make a video so you can follow me on my journey. Did I succeed? Well, I guess you'll just have to watch to find out.

02:21 - Ubiquiti Load Balancing Help Doc Overview

Really helpful video! Saved me a lot of time instead of running the wizard and deleting all my other configurations.

Thanks Avi! To be completely honest with you, I was on the edge of my seat, too! I was at the point where I was just about to say in the video, oh well, I guess I was unsuccessful. Thanks so much for watching, and for your continued support!

So I decided to make this video because this has been something I’ve been wanting to tackle for a while. I didn’t want to use the wizard and lose the entire config. I’ve searched the Internet and haven’t found any video content doing the process manually. Plenty showing how to use the wizard. There are tons of Reddit posts, but no solutions. Of course, there is the Ubiquiti load balancing help doc, but most folks prefer a video to follow. So, I hope this video helps others. One more thing - at the 13:21 mark I stated that the T-Mobile device is CGNAT. I was mistaken, it is not. But the failover is still in a double NAT situation.

Nice video Tony. I am really surprised to see command line instructions needed for this. It kind of makes pfSense look easy.

Thanks for watching Jay. Yeah, the Edge line isn’t as straight forward with certain things. This being one of those things. But, it’s a solid device!

Nice, I am looking to add Verizon Home internet or a Cradlepoint 4g as a backup

Thanks Alonzo! I tested the T-Mobile Home Internet for about a month before deciding to keep it. Works well for streaming and simple surfing tasks. Tested it to send a backup stream to RU-vid, not so great. The upload speeds were fine, but priority-wise it’s probably low on the tier on the cell tower. For a backup ISP, it will work for me for now. Thanks for watching.

This is a very interesting video. I didn't realize you could do this without using the wizard. Didn't look too bad, but as you noted it isn't just a straight copy and paste because of variations in models and ports. Do you know if there is a way you could be notified should the fail over occur? I know with the Unifi UDM-Pro it will sent a notification should WAN2 be activated and when it fails back.

Thanks so much for watching. There isn’t a built-in option like in the UDM-Pro. From what I’ve read on the forums, this can be accomplished using a script. However, it’s not a straight forward process. See a response from Jonatha, a one time Ubiquiti employee. community.ui.com/questions/Sending-email-load-balancer-failure/1b914e46-1f01-490e-8df1-f264955b3893.

Thank you for watching! I appreciate the feedback. Do I have to add any additional parameters to the load balancing config to get it to fallback, or does it happen automatically? Just asking cause I’ve seen quite a few forum posts saying the Edgerouter fails-over no problem, but doesn’t fail back.
