The Colts came to Indy when I was in 1st grade. Been a fan ever since. The two worst draft days of my life were when we drafted Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf, and when we drafted Edgerrin James over Ricky Williams. Needless to say, I never became a NFL gm.

The thing they don't mention is his blocking. Saw the dude step up time after time and take on the blitzer to protect Manning. As complete a RB as you'll ever see.

Think about this, Bill Polian was questioned and criticized by people about taking Manning instead of Ryan Leaf. Taking Edge instead of Ricky Williams. Goes to show you, don't do things just for PR circumstances. Stay true to you and don't get distracted by others. You don't have to justify why you do something. When the Colts won the Super Bowl, Irsay gave Edge an honorary Super Bowl ring. He said we wouldn't have been there w/o you.

Ricky Williams also signed an incentive laden rookie contract. However, playing for a woeful New Orleans team burned him as he reached few of his escalator clauses and earned close to the league minimum. That contract has always been derided as one of the worst.

The first time I saw Edge play for Miami was when they went up against my UCLA Bruins in a game that all UCLA had to do was win and they would have been in the NC game. Edgerrin absolutely destroyed that UCLA defense for 299 yards rushing, and led Miami to an upset and one of the most crushing losses in UCLA college football history. I'll never forget it. That said, I was shocked, dumbfounded and even mad that they took him over Heisman trophy winner Ricky Williams. Well' turns out that was one of the greatest decisions in that franchise history, 2nd only to them taking Peyton over Ryan Leaf just a year before.

Rickey was good, too. He's forever infamous because Mike ditka forgot how to be an nfl coach, and gave washington everything for one guy

Lets not beat around the bush, the only reason he was such a "controversial" pick was because of racist stereotypes and bigoted individuals. He looked like a "street thug" by stereotypes, so people automatically assumed he was going to be some loser. It's why you can't judge a book by its cover, because he was in fact was just a hard working and talented player, who had no character concerns at all.

Forget the dreads the gold teeth that's his culture from growing in miami he was one the toughest and ran with bad intentions he was one of the greatest rbs

James milked the hell out of the colts in that rookie contract. At the time it was a astronomical amount. That same same year Seattle signed Sinclair to 7yr35mil. Who in the previous year led the league in sacks. and still holds the single-season record for the Seahawks. And james made even more via bonus. Sinclair didn't fulfill the entirely of his contract

I'll never forget McNabb getting booed in this draft. It was absolutely the right pick and almost got the birds a Superbowl. Not to mention Mike ditka ended his coaching career with the Ricky Williams pick. Edge was great. A true duel threat RB.

I enjoyed watching James, he was an explosive weapon out of the backfield, punishing runner. And I'm a Boston guy, watching the hapless patriots since 1965. Then Brady cam e here.

They still would of been better with ricky. edgerrin was good but his ceiling was never more then above average at best while ricky, could of been top 10 all time with the right environment. I couldnt imagine the pressure of trying to prove ur better then marshall faulk/ricky williams but he did have legends around him.

Still should had taken Williams, ended up being the better player despite how good James was, neither ever won the big game though. Ricky did more with bad teams though.
