Important note, mulch should not cover up the root flare of the tree, so if you only see the trunk and no flaring out of the top of the root system over the years it will cause problems. I would lower the mulch by the bottom of the tree another 4-6 inches down. If you don't believe me ask an arborist :)

Yep. That's the right technique. The root flare should always be exposed. This guy is essentially making what we call a mulch volcano. It's gonna product rot and kill that tree eventually.

One easy way to get a perfect circle is to tie a rope or a string around the trunk of the tree measure it out to the specific depth you want your circle to be at and as you are doing the cutout move the rope or string into a complete circle and draw out your line. This also works well when you're trying to build round fire pits out of blocks you can put a pin in the Middle with a string or rope on it and draw out your circle and get it perfect every time.Former lanscaper of 20 years here.

When you mulch you need to keep it 6-12 inches away from the tree, covering the tree will actually kill it, just a heads up

Mulching up the tree can add to the moisture content of the bark because mulch holds in moisture thus causing the bark to break down over time opening up the tree to bugs and disease the bark is there to protect the tree just like skin protects us.

You can use twine or string looped around the trunk of the tree to get a perfect circle. Just measure the radius you want and double the length of the rope, loop it around the tree and you can score the grass with a screwdriver or some other sharp tool. Then dig with the shovel or manual edger.

I totally agree the edges make all the difference. My issue is that the lawn that goes up to the flowerbeds is not nice and thick. So that really stops the edges looking so good. I live in Canada and so we get a lot of crabgrass which I try using pre emergent killer. But we also have a thick grass and just loves to grow at the edges. Should I just cut back about 6ins and put in some sod? I have worked so hard on the flower beds and really would love to take it to the next step. Any suggestions Thanks

Have you ever heard that trying miracle gro potting mix moisture control vs mulch is a good choice? Please advise. Thanks

Much would be better than adding a layer of soil. The soil will not keep weeds out like much will. Also when you have to distinctly different soils types water will not move well between the two. Stick to 3-4 inches of mulch and your trees will be happy. Just remember to pull the much back 4-6 inches away from the trunk of the tree.

I wouldn’t recommend that. I think weeds would thrive in the potting mix.

When you first made the circles around your trees you just used your shovel and an edger or was there other tools involved? I have thirteen huge pine trees I want to make look nice like what you have.

I just used the shovel to clear out the grass and cut a circle.

Do u have fabric under there to block weeds from coming out? I have the same set up but with 3 palm trees and wanna add mulch just like u did but I was wondering if I have to dig first to take out dirt and add fabric to block weeds or unwanted grass and then lay down mulch?? Thank u
@lakehouselawncare1755
@lakehouselawncare1755 3 года назад
I don’t use landscape fabric under the mulch. Preen is a product you could use to prevent weeds from popping up in your mulch.

how does one do this around multiple small trees ( fruit trees) put in the last three years, they have a tendency to get weedy.

You could do the same thing for small trees. Preen works well to keep the weeds out of the mulch.
