About All In The Family:
One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time, All in the Family with Archie Bunker as the irascible, highly opinionated, working-class family man who viewed the world on his terms and his terms only. When not arguing with his liberal son-in-law, "Meathead," Archie took refuge in his long-suffering wife, Edith, who tries her best to understand Archie's conservative ways and outdated beliefs.

This is when she was still a bit rough edged and cynical with a lower voice. Not until later in the first season would she become the ditsy and high pitched Edith that everyone came to know.

When there was talk of having the Edith Bunker character killed off, Jean Stapleton reminded Norman Lear that Edith was a fictional character. Lear took a long pause, causing Stapleton to think she had hurt him. Finally, Lear said, "To me, she isn't."

Most of the lines from this episode was straight from 12 Angry Men several years prior to All In The Family's premiere. Hardly groundbreaking. Just another instance of Norman Lear stealing from others. He stole the idea for All In The Family from a British show Til Death Us Do Part And Sanford & Son was a ripoff of another British show Steptoe & Son And he stole the characters of George & Louise Jefferson from black writer Eric Monte He also stole the idea for Good Times & What's Happening? from Eric Monte Eric Monte never received proper credit for those characters/shows nor was he appropriately compensated financially This is all despite Norman Lear being hailed some civil rights hero by mainstream media Not sure what's so "groundbreaking" about stealing from others
@jamessmith4582
@jamessmith4582 6 месяцев назад
@@kleeamd8274 Agree 100%. Edith's line at 2:27 about not being able to trust the neighbors if they are all born liars was without a doubt stolen from 12 Angry Men, as was the basic premise of this whole episode.
@richardherdman2121
@richardherdman2121 6 месяцев назад
Indeed, groundbreaking for CBS to air a scenario like this in a sitcom and groundbreaking because it reached a wide audience. Educated people are well aware that virtually no idea is new - it's all been written and/or performed previously over the centuries. For example, even 12 Angry Men used tropes and ideas expressed in earlier works. But that didn't make it any less groundbreaking for its medium at the time. And the same holds true for All In The Family.

The theme of this episode was later reprised in the dramatic series "Family". Kate Lawrence (Sada Thompson) causes a mistrial of a murder suspect (of a young girl) when she is the lone holdout against conviction. She then becomes the target of persecution and threats in the community when a malicious juror reveals that she is the holdout. The suspect is later proven innocent when a man posing as a newspaper reporter is found to be the real killer. Just like this AITF episode, the wrongly accused man was a young Hispanic while the actual killer was white.
