Editing a Photo from the Coolest Location You Never Got to See

I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to edit a landscape photo from last year. This brief processing tutorial focuses on dodging and burning using luminosity masks from Lumenzia. This is my typical workflow when editing photos in lightroom and photoshop.

My edit was too blue. Stay until the end and see how I fixed it and, I think it gives the most valuable lesson in the video 👍

I almost commented “too blue” till I waited for the end. I like the final version! Lovely colors. And you are right about taking a break to let the eyes reset and come back. I learned that lesson while editing.

Great channel, new subscriber here. Wondering where do you put the line, when is editing so heavy it's not really a photograph anymore? Would love to hear your reflections.

Or you could find the grey pixels for the photo numerically in photoshop. This technique allows you to correct color temperature and tint issues at the same time. Open background image in photoshop. Create new layer. Fill layer with 50% grey. Change blending mode to difference. Create a threshold layer, move the threshold slider to a value of one. Increase from one until groups of black pixels become visible (but don't go higher than a value of six). Zoom into a group of black pixels. (The black pixels are actually middle grey, or close to it. 128 x 128 x 128 or so in the rgb values.) Use the color sampler tool to mark a group of black pixels. Discard the new layer and threshold layer to the trash. Add a curves adjustment globally to the image, click the grey point eye dropper in the curves dialogue and click on the marker you left over the grey pixels you found. Boom, no more color cast. Works amazingly for 95% of photos.

For Capture One users: you don't need any plugin, luminosity selection is built-in (called here "Luma Range"). There's no preset selection though, but the preview is explicit enough. One not-necessarily obvious thing is that the layer has to be filled in order to see anything.

"One not-necessarily obvious thing is that the layer has to be filled in order to see anything." More specifically, Luma Range *modifies* the existing layer mask, as opposed to simply defining it.

Gidday, There are two other options to change the colour cast in PS. Firstly, you convert the image layer to a "Smart Object", then with the layer selected, to to "Filter" and select "Camera Raw Filter". This will open the camera raw dialogue and you can make the required adjustments. Converting to a "Smart Object" will allow you to go back and make further changes if required. This is a non-destructive method. The second option is to select the image layer then go to the "Image" menu, down to "Adjustments" then "Match Colour" and lastly, select the "Neutralize" option. Thank you for sharing how you use Lumenzia. This video might give me some courage to try and come to grips with the plugin. Cheers

Opening the original RAW file as a smart object in Photoshop allows you to open the image in ACR where you can change everything that you can in LR. No need to open the warm image in LR and add as a second layer in PS. You may need/want to copy the smart object layer and rasterize it, which is identical to the two layers in this final image.

I downloaded the free version of the other guy's (CRS) luminosity masks but haven't played with them very much so far. I like that zoom out trick for adding a vignette, to date I've been looking at the navigator's small image to make that judgement.
@NitroBlast90
@NitroBlast90 4 года назад
It's a cool trick to know, but I get the feeling you could get similar results just using the adjustment brush in Lightroom. I tend to shy away from Photoshop on account of it being a complete information overload. It looks simple enough when you grasp the process, but most of the time I don't even know where to start. PS offers so much, but I feel like every operation requires a tutorial just so you know what each function does and how it's used. And even then it takes time to understand. So rather than racking my brain around the complex workings of PS, I just do my best in LR and most of the time I'm happy with what I get out.
@mmeyers76
@mmeyers76 4 года назад
I went through the exact same thing. I HATED Ps for the exact reasons you listed. Completely unintuitive, seemingly needlessly complex and every day I would be screaming at my computer. Stick with it. I promise you it's worth it. There's a level of polish you can't get with Lr alone.

While I could probably have figured out how Lumenzia works by myself or with Greg Benz's videos, I just picked up a video course from one of your F4 compadres. So interesting to see how you process. I recognise all the things you were targeting in the video but intrigued to see that, as ever in PS, there are so many ways to skin a cat! That’s the beauty of PS I think, that people can process in such individual ways to produce what they are aiming for. Where you paint white or black, I adapt the mask then raise and lower exposure within the mask. Same effect but (I think) less destructive if you screw up (which I often do) and you can raise and lower the masked layers opacity afterwards to change the subtlety of the change too. Loads of creative decisioning! Enjoyed the video! Keep ‘em coming - no mean feat in a lockdown!

Luminar 4 isn't for everybody. I've tried it, and I was completely unsatisfied with it. Very little control over the effects. If it works for you, great. I personally am sticking with Capture One. But certain influencers who tout that Luminar is the “future” of photography and the beginning of AI becoming the next greatest revolution don't really have as much control over their images as they brag about having.

@@longliveclassicmusic Yeah. That's true. They have a lot to improve. But for editing thousands of images, it can be a lot easier, Being new to photo processing, Luminar feels calm and satisfying. But it has most of the features of PS. Also, I think the erase/clone tool is better than PS.
