I'm going to show you my method of time aligning real drums using a slip editing technique. Connect with me www.texcokley.com / tex.cokley My studio band, Opticus open.spotify.c... / opticus
Do you know if there is a way you can make these actions conditional? Like a toolbar button that engages these specific custom actions? I have a similar system for editing left to right and deleting dead space, where the left of split is selected so I can delete after my second split.
Thank you Mike! It is important. Was game changer when I dialed this in! Changed workflow in the best way possible! Thanks for checking it out and kind words!
@@texcokley4177 do you have a method for editing guitars to the grid quickly? thats been my worst struggle. Ive seent stretch markers and slip editing, but what i have been doing has made my tracks (historically) in the past sound choppy because of abrupt pauses between media items. Im trying to get a solid method for editing guitars and i will be set
The best explanation and how to video! Thank you! How can I reach you on a couple questions with adding or cutting unwanted drum hits? Mostly kick trigger, I play metal and the high bpms sometimes I run into this. Thanks!
Fantastic Tex, great handy way to edit drums, I only have one problem, and that is, when i´m splitting track and move a clip on one side of the split the other side follows why is that? Tkanks Lars
Lars, thanks for checking out bud and thanks for comment! You may need to tweak a setting when you split clips, reaper needs to only select the right side of clips being split. If it remains highlighting the whole item, it will move the whole items data. Hope that makes sense. I’m in Hawai’i at the moment, but when I return I can figure out exactly what’s wrong. Hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing this. Can this process be done while preserving takes? I'm frustrated with Logic, where you have to commit and unpack all multi-mic drum tracks to new tracks before Flex Time can be used. Ultimately I'm looking to retain the most flexibility from tracking to final product without committing to / unpacking tracks before making timing edits... does Reaper allow that scenario?
You are welcome, thank you for watching. I believe it does preserve audio and takes. After I get done slicing and time aligning, under the track tab, I hit glue items, then it heals all cuts with tracks aligned and in one solid take again. Hope that helps!
Thank you Jarrel! Go to Preferences>Project>Media Items Defaults. Check the first 2 boxes that say Create automatic fade in and fade out and the other is overlap and crossfade items when splitting. I use .005 for length
I set up my action and mouse modifier how you have it in the video, but when I alt-click and drag on an item, it doesn't actually split the item first. I have to release my mouse to actually perform the split, so I'm unable to accomplish the workflow you have in the video. Am I missing something?
Nathan, you should be holding alt the whole time while editing. Wherever the curser is, by clicking mouse while holding alt, should split item. Then… moving to right of split, still holding alt, in item area that needs to be moved, click and drag item to where it needs to be. Hope that helps. 🤓
Hey there, I've been trying this method, but with alt S, but for some reason when I slice it creates a big auto crossfade. I've turned auto cross fade off and it still does it, i'm stumped
Whats up Eric? You need to go into your preferences (CNTRL+P on PC) and go to crossfades under the edit tab I believe (not in front of reaper right now). Change your crossfade settings to 5-10ms and it will be in the right zone. I have dealt with this as well. I've found that when you zoom in far enough, you can slice and it will not have a crossfade if you have crossfade button not selected. I'll do a little searching tonight
Ya Jonathan, when you get quick at this it’s the only way to go to preserve sound. Stretching works, but weirds me out a little messing with the audio. Thanks for checking vid out!
@@texcokley4177 I just went through a 1 take drum recording I did and painstakingly did this. I think I cramped my pinky with the alt usage lolz. But what a difference! There's a lot you can save. Tex to the rescue!!
I have done the first steps but the part where you can zoom in and out wherever the mouse cursor is doesn't work when I try it. I have Reaper v7.09. Is that the reason?
It shouldn’t affect the function, I’m not at desk at the moment, but will check this when I get back to studio. On vacation in CA right now. I will get to the bottom of it, it is the only way I work on drums!
When I make a split and want to slip edit the items selected, it's moving the items before the split as well. Anyone know how I can move just the items selected?
Hi Cody, thanks for checking out vid! Do you have auto cross fades on? It should overlap all splits made for you. Can you explain a little more detail and I'll try to help. I've been doing this for years, and always works great. Probable a minor tweak and you'll be loving it!
