Check out my "Drum Editing in REAPER" course on Pro Mix Academy!
bit.ly/3DfFgww
In this episode, we'll cover a brief introduction to drum editing concepts in Reaper. "Problem area" editing will not be covered this time around, but I do plan to do a much more comprehensive full tutorial in the future.
We'll be looking at drum tracks provided by a metal band from Germany called "Lunatic Man's Dream." Check them out on Facebook at / lunaticmansdreamofficial

Nice work. Sounds way better. It does look like at 1:11 the snare bottom is out of phase with the top. Flip the phase, and you're good to go.

Thank you. I hope to do a full drum edit on YT, perhaps for a live stream, in the near future.

I've seen a few people use this approach of slip editing, and I do it too, it works great. Probably one of the biggest selling points for Reaper for me. BUT, I don't know why people alter the entire track every single time. The way this is being done seems like you've created more work because the second you made your first slip edit, every single beat the drummer played in time, is now out of time. Meaning, if the drummer only really played like a dozen beats out of time, instead of altering a dozen beats you need to alter the entire track numerous times, pushing and pulling beats in and out of time. Why not isolate small chunks of the piece, and only the pieces that have issues? If the first downbeat is off, then only move the first downbeat. Look through the song or section for the next offending beat, and edit just that beat or bar, or group of bars effected by the out of time beat. If you're editing a performance with a lot of syncopation, fast subdivisions, and even weird tuples, once you make that first slip edit changing the entire song/section, you've created a lot more work for yourself down the road. You're obviously very good at what you do, so if works for you then great. I'm just curious if there's an issue you may see in the approach I use, or if there's a reason you do it the way you do. Great video!

You make good points, the second you slip the first thing, you do in a sense create more work, unless you place a cut past what you want to focus on. I tend to edit a whole song in most cases, but if the drummer was VERY tight, I may only need to focus on a few spots here and there. That said, as often as possible, I try to work with large sections as opposed to moving every single hit. Said all that to say, the amount of shifting one has to do is greatly affected by the drummer as well as the timing of other musical elements.

What about working from the end to the beginning instead? Right to Left as it were.

thanks! Sorry about the crunchy audio :( I figured out what i did wrong with both mic placement and accidental plugins in OBS. Got a desk mounted boom mic and a permanent "podcasting" mic coming so I can have a dedicated setup for this, voice quality should be significantly better next time around ;)

Let's hope people don't start moving hits about until they have set the correct BPM. 😃 It's also easy to move things around in Melodyne, but too tempting to start messing with drum tuning. Stay safe and well.

Question: If you only time adjust the kick and snare tracks, doesn't that cause some unnatural artifacts in the room and OH mic tracks? Maybe if the moves are only slight, it doesn't matter, but seems like moving one and not the other would put your room and OH tracks at odds with the kick and snare time-adjusted tracks. Can anyone fill me in on why or why this doesn't matter?

As a general rule you want to move everything together to preserve phase coherence, but sometimes you have to make a.mi or sacrifice to fix a significant timing error. Sometimes I may find where the same section was played again, but perhaps correctly and move a copy of that information to the incorrectly played part, but on rare occasions, you just gotta break the rules because even with the potential phase issue, that one hit may still sound much better than it did "as played," if that makes sense.

@@LetsTalkAboutReaper Thanks for the reply Myk. I just bought your Reaper drum editing program a couple hours ago so looking forward to digging into that. Just got some drum tracks back from a drummer so I'll have some good stuff to practice with. In regards to your reply, I guess I'm still confused because in this video, you were just moving the kick and snare, and not just in one or two spots, while leaving the other tracks untouched. Was this vid just for the basic idea of what to do, but not how you generally approach getting drums nice and tight, but not robotic? For example, if someone sent you drum tracks, and the drummer's timing needed a fair amount of adjustment on the kick and snare, would you generally not touch the room and oh tracks or would you generally move everything? Thanks for putting together the program. Looking forward to downloading this into my brain hole. :)

@@SaySomethingWorthHearing honestly it'll make.your brain hurt just a lil' bit. I'd have to go back and rewatch this video to see why I did it, but usually the only time I do a move like that is if the drummer was not in time with himself/herself. For example, making a move in favor of the kick puts the snare so far off time that it sounds terrible. In a case like that, there may not be an appropriate way to correct it short of retracking drums, and that may not be possible if you were sent tracks. So sometimes you just make sacrifices and trust that you can cover artifacts with something else. In many cases, something you hear in solo disappears in the context of the mix. All that said, I would definitely recommend using that method VERY seldom as it does introduce another problem. It's just less of one than you had before. And fair warning, the course was made before REAPER 7, so there is an addendum that you should receive with the course to see how my workflow changed since then.

Mistakes were made 😂I accidentally had some plugins engaged in OBS but didn't realize it until I started editing the video. No way I was going to start over. I'll need to do some testing before the next video and likely should invest in a desk mounted mic arm so I can position the mic better as well.

They definitely can, and I recommend listening carefully for "crunchy" sounding cymbals where you have a crossfade in an area with a lot of activity.
@MrGalassi

what click sounds do you use?
@LetsTalkAboutReaper
@LetsTalkAboutReaper 3 года назад
It varies. In most cases I just use the default metronome in Reaper. Sometimes I will use ReaSynth and make a click track with midi to be able to get a different tone. I have a video about using that method. The project I was sent for this video had a click source on one of the tracks. There is an option in the menu to "insert click source" that renders the metronome to a time selection on a track. This is helpful if you need to have more control of routing of the click track, so performers can have varying amounts in their own monitor mixes.

Cool video Mike! I'm just starting my channel as well, and made a video very similar to this to start. I use the exact same technique, just set it up differently with custom actions so my hands stay only in one position as I'm editing. Makes it much quicker! Its in my video if you are curious. Great channel my friend, an inspiration for me!
