Formidable pianist and musician. She keeps all the textures clear with all the forward momentum the piece needs to reveal its form.

2 weeks ago I started reading a thesis paper called "New Light on Medtner as pianist and teacher" by Karpeyev, which focued on Edna Iles' lessons with Nikolai Medtner, which she took very detailed notes about. At that time there was no recordings of her on youtube, so thank you very much for sharing this.

Yes, I downloaded that doctoral thesis from somewhere in my internet ramblings a few years ago and have been meaning to read it. Even though I'm a Medtner freak, there are so many details on performance practice that it kind of overwhelmed me and I put it aside. One of these days I'll do more than glance through it. Major props to Russian Rarities for posting this. This is my favorite sonata of his and it's so nice to hear another recording of it besides Marc Hamelin's (not that it's anything short of astounding).

Many years ago I read Medtner's book The Muse and the Fashion and wondered why Edna Iles was not in The Groves dictionary of music and musicians. Since then having been a bit on the look out for recordings like these.

I actually met Karpeyev and had a lesson on the Tragica during my undergrad. If I remember correctly, his thesis was incomplete at the time, and by the time he finished I had gone on to other topics. Karpeyev is a great gift to Medtner's cause, as was this direct student if Medtner! I can't believe there's a recording of her playing this work! Amazing!

I have never heard the passage 6:45 to 6:56 played darker than this. The bell tolls for thee!

Very bold and energetic all through. Raised the bar for Medtner interpretation which spurs me on to revisiting my insights on this work.

I hear pure originality ! Shades, consciously or not, of the Spanish composers’ works which defies polarizing north and south.

This may become my favorite performance of this piece. She brings out the contrasts on a much much finer level of detail than the other pianists I’ve heard playing this thing-which is an issue for music like this. If it’s played too two-dimensionally, it all starts sounding the same. In other words, boring. But she plays very orchestrally, or rather organisticly, which I never expected-all those pronounced pedal tones in the middle of the texture. I feel more like I’m being treated to a story than sitting on the sidelines of an Olympic wrestling match.
