Well, this build didn't turn out at all like I was hoping. One problem lead to another and this plane was finished before I was. Let's take a look at what happened and what I wound up with. As always I appreciate you watching.

Too many other channels show the finished product with only the perfection forefront and centre. Yours is forefront and centre with warts and all and I mean that in the most positive sense. I don’t know anyone who’s ever built the perfect model so it’s refreshing to see the errors made regardless whether they were yours or the kits. This is the true reality of scale modelling. Good stuff!! 👍👍👍

Thanks very much! I think it's important to show everything in a build, not just when it all goes well. Appreciate the feedback!

This is a real build that many of us can relate too. Virtually every new build is an experiment in progress, I doubt, that if we;re honest, that over 50% of all builds have a mistake or problem in construction or painting somewhere along the line. And what's more surprising is how often we make the same mistake again and usually we know we're doing it at the time. Anyway thanks for sharing, and helping us to not repeat what you've just done, but most of us will echo your mistakes sometime in the future.

Thank you very much for understanding where I'm coming from. My complaint isn't with the kit but rather my own inability to work through some of the issues I had with the kit. Thanks for your feedback and thanks for watching!

Greetings from Canada. I totally agree with your comment. Well said. I live this, in various forms, on every model I make. It makes us human.

We all go through these issues. I give you lots of credit because my patience level would have turned that project into a projectile.

I think we definitely all have these problems sooner or later. I just find my patience for this kind of stuff diminishing. You're absolutely right about converting this plane into a projectile too - LMAO.

Thanks very much- I'd like to think I'm my own worst critic when it comes to my builds. And I'm definitely lingering on the errors on this one. But like I said- lessons learned on this one for sure.

Gretings Mr G, it really is a shame that these supposed good brand kits are not up to standard, that's why I still reckon Tamiya are some of the best kits on the market, like you mentioned, their Mustang does not have too many parts and that reminds me, I must finidh mine P51, great to see another video from your good self, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia 👌👍👌👍👌👍

Hi Les - I was expecting so much more from this kit after my success with their Zero kit. I spoke to a friend of mine and it seems a lot of these issues are common with this kit. Well, the next one will be better! Hope everything is well with you - regards from Texas!

I used to struggle with with NMF until I found Tamiya LP 11 Silver. I know it's not a metallic paint but if sprayed on a smooth surface it can look very convincing as NMF. Then use the AK extreme metal for some light shading. As it's highly resistant paint it doesn't even need to be clear coated either. Then when it comes to panel line washes, Flory washes are very friendly to NMF is if using LP11 you can stick to enamel/oil. Btw, I think a lot of Korean War mustangs were overpainted in Silver Lacquer because panels puttied.

I've heard a lot about LP11- I'll have to pick some up and give it a try. As for my particular subject Little Lynn, it still had a NMF based on the two photos I had. Appreciate the input and thank you for watching!

First time viewer here. I like your style of build presentation. I look forward to seeing more of your build videos in the future. Although I can't build anything anytime soon (due to health), you encourage and give me ideas on how to approach things when I can start building again. One question, You mentioned using a VMS clear coat. What is your opinion of the VMS brand products? I've heard about them and was wondering if they are worth adding to my bench. Thanks, and great video!
@MisterGsWorkbench
@MisterGsWorkbench 7 месяцев назад
Hi Philip- thanks very much for the feedback. I really like the VMS satin clear, but I honestly wasn't too thrilled with their gloss clear. I prefer AK Gauzy or Alclad Aqua Gloss. Thanks again for watching!

Hi. New subscriber. I agree, the F-51 looks good anyhow. Couple of things from my own trials. Unlike Alclad, AK Extreme does not require an undercoat barrier (black or whatever). It can be sprayed with several thin layers directly onto bare plastic, which is not harmed. IMO, the end finish is virtually the same as if it had been sprayed over an undercoat, but you avoid potential paint incompatibility and save a lot of work. Personally, I don't get the automatic "paint it black first" thing, but that's another topic. Second, you mentioned AK metal coming off when you wiped the excess wash. Strange, because last night I applied my homemade panel wash made from artist's oils and Terpenoid over bare AK, no clear coat. The wash remained for about 10 minutes, then I wiped the excess and had no issue with the metal coming off. What kind of wash are you using? There are lots of expensive washes and 'panel liners' marketed where you get one color in one bottle, and you don't really know what chemicals are in them. I think it's a rip off, and I only make my own. Not only is it easy, but one tube of oil paint and a bottle of odorless thinner is probably equal to 100 bottles of commercial wash ($$$!). Of course, I don't know what you were using, but just my observations. In general, if I have any uncertainty about chemical compatibilities, I test the process on scrap first. Thanks for your enjoyable channel.

First - thanks for subscribing! I was using an oil wash over an acrylic clear that I sprayed the plane with after decals. I applied the oil wash and after only five minutes or so I began to remove it and saw the paint coming off in the areas around the lower fuselage by the tail. No idea what caused it. As for spraying the AK Extreme Metal paints over bare plastic - that was suggested to me after relating my experience to a friend of mine. Lesson learned for the next plane! Like I said - I learned a few things from this build that I will carry over to the next Mustang. Thanks again for the feedback and for your support.

I just finished the checker nose Big Beautiful Doll Eduard P-51. Agreed the cockpit is a bit of a PITA. The intake grill was completely wrong way to small only covered half the intake no idea what that is about. I did not like how the tail wheel fits into the fuselage just bad. I also dont like that the prop is fixed cant spin it. The front windshield didnt fit so great on my build. Anyway it turned out alright. 😂

Same issue with the drop tanks. Just left them off.
@MisterGsWorkbench
@MisterGsWorkbench 8 месяцев назад
You're absolutely right - that PE grill was just floating inside the fuselage and I left it out. All that attention to detail and they can't get that intake grill to fit? I understand the desire to accommodate all versions but the tiny parts in the cockpit were just annoyances. And yes - the tail wheel leg was just obnoxious to fit... Thanks for watching!

I feel like there is something going on with the paints we're using. I had a similar problem with the zero I'm building now. The bare metal layer was the problem, nothing would bond to it. A couple other guys were having the same or similar issues on the message board we're on.

I think I would have had a better experience if I had painted the AK Extreme Metal over bare plastic and then a clear coat. Lessons learned. Thanks for watching!
