In this fun, in-process model kit review, I am looking at Eduard's 1/48 Fw 190D-9 (kit no. 84101). This kit has the same plastic as the ProfiPack version without the photoetch. We'll be looking at the in-process kit, going through the kit instructions, I'll share potential problem areas to look out for, we'll look at surface detailing, interior detail, decals, clear parts, aftermarket items used in this build, and I'll give my conclusions at the end. Is this kit unbuildable or the best Fw190D-9 kit on the market? Let's find out together!

Good Morning 🌞 0945 OHIO time….. I’m only here for the REVIEW 🤔 Never built a EDUARD kit???? I do like details, It helps if a modeler makes a Display or Diorama… EDUARD does have quite a selection of 1/48 kits…… YES, your review does help… I would put INFORMATIVE first ENTERTAINING last, ( maybe make a joke 😅 ) just kidding !!!!!!!!!! It’s ALL GOOD… I was looking at EDUARDS P-39 AIRACOBRA ????? Just an idea ???? Another GREAT REVIEW….. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Let’s see what happens…. MODEL ON…….. CHRIS 🇺🇸

Hi. As always, a good video!. I ve built that kit and was a real PITA....fought me all the way. I have also built Hobby Boss D-11 wich is basically the same airframe, and it was a bliss. Tamiya makes easy what is hard and difficult, Eduard in sone kits, just the opposite. Best wishes from Argentina. And keep on modelling!

I partially built the profipack version 8184 a few years back. Loved the detail but as you experienced the kit was very fiddly and my wing assemble to the fuselage just would not fit without shaving off a bunch of plastic and still large gaps where you indicated. Also I left the wing gun covers till the end and it was just a horrible fit. Glad to see they fit for you prior to mating the wings. After so much frustration back in the box it went and onto the self of doom. I have a 1/48 2017 retooled Eduard FW early A series in my stash and I've read that they fit together much better than the original 2006 tooled A7-8 series.

Right on! I'm sorry that you had similar issues with the D-9! I've heard good things about the new-tool A series, but have only built the dreaded original Eduard A series. Surprisingly, I was able to get the airframe on the A-5 together easier than on the D-9! No filler needed. Not to say it was easy. Cheers!

I got my earlier message wrong Jon. My D13 is by Hobbyboss. It's certainly a lovely kit but a lot more simple build than this. It has 2 props and 2 cowl options open and closed. But no open gun or engine panels etc. If you want an easier build look at the Hobbyboss.

Hi, Matt. I'm actually working on the Tri-Master/Dragon/Italeri Ta-152H currently and also having difficulty with the lower wing spar fitting with the upper wings on this kit - give me a break! There's no engine detail in the wheel bays in the Italeri boxing. I'll wait until I have the airframe together for a full review. Other Fw190s in-process include the Tamiya A3 and F8. At least the HobbyBoss D-9 is a dream construction wise. Cheers!

@MatterusOD I've never seen the inside of a ZM kit, but I may try one some day. They do look daunting! Years ago, I had the Tri-Master D-9 but decided to sell it because it was so far beyond my skill level. After building their 262, I don't regret my decision 🙂. PE hinges and other bits, a resin engine, and plastic parts that don't fit all that well ad up to a nightmare in my mind. I'll complete the Italeri Ta-152H to gain experience with one of the family of Tri-Master Fw190s, but I think the HobbyBoss line is the way to go for a nice mix of detail and buildability. Cheers!

Thanks for a nice review. The "Dora" is perhaps my favorite WW2 fighter...I just love the profile from any view. I'm currently working on Hasagewa's 1/32 version with lots of after market. I'm sorry this was such a painful build. IF I go back to 1/48...I'll probably just do Tamiya's version again. I might check the Hobby Boss version...but I once did a Hobby Boss 1/700 USS Arizona...or tried too...eventually just binned it...was a terrible kit in every respect...kind soured me on HB.

Odd for an Eduards to have scaling problems. However I do like your vintage clamps - clothespins combined with rubber bands, I thought I was the only modeler left in the world using those :-) The prop looks a little out of scale, but its been a while since I've built an FW. While wheels down offers a good way to detail variants, I'm looking at building wheels up . Not all kits are made to accomplish that and adding the pilot or crews extends building time. Plus unlike the " old days" kits don't come with stands so that adds a bit more complexity Airfix used to build them, I can't find them anymore. Any ideas ? Cheers and Model On, Bob

Airfix and a few other manufacturers still provide closed gear covers if you want to build them "in-flight." I'm sure you could find a generic aircraft stand online and modify your kit to fit. Of course you would need aircrew...

Eduard kits can be challenging at times. I built the Bf 109E-4 Profi Edition and wanted to display the engine in closed position. I almost bined the kit. I wonder whether some day any model company will come up with a new and state-of-the-art kit of the FW-190 D-9 in 1/32 (with full rivets, optional engine etc). They would likely sell tons of it.

It's not often a kit gets a low rating from your good self. But proof in point that Eduard don't always get things spot on. I have no doubt the end result will be as spectacular as your other finished builds. A quick question, purely because I'm a nosy bugger. Do you ever venture into bigger aircraft such as any four engined WWII bombers or is fighter aircraft what you concentrate solely on. I know I don't comment on every video but I make sure I watch them all. Best wishes and thank you for all your work! 👍👍

Great question! I have built the 1/72 B-36 as a 9 year old. I have also built 6 or so twin engine aircraft as an adult. I have featured the PE-2, Mosquito, and Ki-46 Dinah on the channel so far. I plan to review the A-20, Beaufighter, and Bf-110 in upcoming videos. Plus, I have lots of multi-engine kits (mostly twins) in the stash that will be reviewed later. There aren't that many nice 1/48 kits of the 4-engine bombers out, and the logistics of building a larger aircraft in 1/48 are daunting. Cheers!

Hello Jon, excellent video and review of this kit, I have it in the stash, it will be an upcoming build, it's not a weekend, it's a profipack, so everything comes. Regarding those problems, I read that they existed in the 190 A series and its variants, but I didn't know about the D9 version, so I was warned hahahaha. Eduard for me is not infallible in terms of construction, of course it has very good details, it comes with everything you need, even being a weekend one, it is outstanding, that is why it is for an experienced builder, just as you have put the D9 Hobbyboss, it is ideal for those who don't want problems. Very, very hard kit to assemble, very poor fitting (at list in the kit I have). I’m thinking to using it for a diorama of a downed plane, to solve the most critical fitting issues on the plane nose. Hello and thanx for review. I have build this kit like 2 years ago from Revell reboxing. It comes without photoetched parts but with 2 camouflage and cartograph decals. Main problem with fit is the wing spar , with not fitting in fuselage openings. It must be adjusted both rear non visible part of wings spar and plastic in fuselage sides in rear of the wing root. There will be gap on front towards lower engine covers, but it was filled in original plane with elastic gasket. A whole wing assembly will be moved a bit to the rear and gun covers will fit. Besides of that mounting gear legs is a bit complicated because it representing original with no big well defined mounting holes like in tamiya kit. Otherwise a beautiful kit with excellent detail. It comes also in D13 and D11 variants not covered by other model companys, so maybe some fine day i will get it once more in proffi pack issue and make D13. Speaking about Eduards 190 A early kit it have even bigger fit problems with not only wing spar but also with fuselage firewalls between pilots cockpit and gun bay. But this one is a history, new eduards 190A issue is a totally new kit with even better complete surface detail and excellent fit. Its more simplyfyed around the engine, but its for the better. If someone is not intressted in superdetailing its easier to build, otherwise if one wish to have an exposed engine or gun bays there is a 3d printed detailing kits from eduard with much better detail than engine in previous issue.
