We've been unschooling / homeschooling for the past 10 years. Our current education system is developmentally inappropriate and failing our kids. As more parents begin to question the effectiveness of school, homeschooling has been gaining popularity at an incredible rate ... but what about unschooling? Is it really as harmful as social media is making it out to be?

What is your advice on homeschooling a child with ADHD?
@hermonorossco7988

My daughter is smarter and by far more knowledgeable than kids her age. Once she knew how to read and do basic math learning became very easy. Thanks to the internet and our local library being a block away she can learn anything she wants. We buy very little curriculum, mostly math. The things she knows are extraordinary and she is so awesome to talk to. I feel like homeschooling lets kids discover the things they love especially if they are allowed to lead. She wants to be a librarian and a writer. She does incredible art, makes jewelry,and reads everything from classic literature to history to diy and science. She is aware of the world and knows more than me. She is kind and un tarnished by bullying. She has also been able to develop a relationship with god. She is nuerodivergent and homeschooling is the best thing I ever did for her self esteem.

@@stephaniejuarbemy daughter has adhd and hom😊schooling has been awesome. She’s able to stand while working and able to move. She can change topics when she wants so she doesn’t lose interest. She is 14 now and she is able to participate in conversations with adults regarding history, finance,science, and literature and more. People are often surprised by what she knows. I’m happy that she will be able to take care of herself someday. My older daughter had friends who didn’t know how to do dishes, laundry or cook. She can grow a garden and hunt while also reading pride and prejudice. Recently she learned about the Stanford prison project. I work full time and we are able to make it work. Her dad and her have theological conversations in the evenings after dinner and they love to learn about archeology and history together. With all that said homeschooling has been easier for my child with ADHD than public school was. Also she doesn’t get bullied for being different.

Unschooling testimony: my unschooled children are now 27, 29, and 31. All married, all self-employed, all quite successful, all with very diverse skills. But most importantly, they are all very good humans. My top priority when raising them was: excellent character. I figured it didn't matter how successful you are in the world - if you're a jerk that no one can stand to be around, or you're selfish and mean, you are a total (and miserable) failure. I had rules ... they must be productive doing something. I did not have TV, and most of that time I did not have the internet. This is definitely a "soapbox subject" for me ... especially because I see the fruits of it. And now with 8 grandchildren (so far) I get to help do it all over again. 😊❤

I started out with homeschooling by recreating school at home then quickly learned that I didn't have to do that and let my son excel in each area so that he wasn't necessarily doing all the same grade level work he might be grades ahead in certain subjects and then we could spend extra time where he might be struggling eventually this all evolved into unschooling. These were the best decisions. I got to spend so much extra time with him and to see him learn and grow and Excel has been so wonderful.

I homeschooled my kids. The best decision I’ve ever made. It brought our military family closer. We could take school with every time we moved to a new base. I didn’t have to pull kids out of school and then start a new school as soon as we got to the new location. We discuss topics at dinner and different points of views. So we are “schooling” all the time but it’s not sitting at a desk all day. We would sit outside and read or do experiments. I read a chapter book to them and they read a grade level book to me. My kids are best friends. They are thriving because I spent that one on one time with them to show and discuss alternative ways to do their work, take notes, etc. I have one at university studying to be an aerospace engineer and the other is now attending a Colegiate high school taking all dual enroll and AP classes. I get compliments all the time from teachers and other adults of how well behaved and well mannered my kids are.

My two granddaughters were homeschooled from K to high school. Both are college graduates with one graduating magna cum laude. One is a pediatric RN, the other an environmental scientist. They were involved with homeschool group sports and music. In our state homeschool students are regularly tested by the state education department to monitor their progress in order to receive a diploma. They did have a graduation ceremony with other homeschool students in the area. My granddaughters got an education without social peer pressure or bullying.
@moonhunter9993
@moonhunter9993 Месяц назад
I think that's the main thing: the "socialization" so many people say my daughter is missing... is being bullied and (sadly often) broken by a system that favours the bullies. She's got plenty of social interactions in her other activities. Are there potential bullies, too? Yes, but she's more empowered to do something about it.

Children who go to school only spend 12,5% of their time in classes the rest is spent getting there, and getting back, and arguing. Age segregation is a very serious detriment to real development.Constant interruption in the classroom in order to move onto the next ‘ teaching’ experience does not promote learning. have you ever read Sunnerhill by A.S. Neil, or Free At Last by Dan Greenberg ? We did unschooling and founded a homeschooling club out of Boston, which is still active 30 years later. One teacher told me that it was against the law to do what I was doing, and I just looked at her. Uneducated human, she was.

Best decision I could have ever made because I was able to focus on what they really needed help with and we got out of the "schooling mindset" of public school. They are all now thriving adults with careers. Now I am looking to homeschool my granddaughter next year because she is several grades behind in math and at this point the public school will just keep passing her and all she will do is continue to fall behind and struggle.

This resonates with me so much because this is something we really want to do. We recently moved them out of a school to a farm school because my 4yr old son was expected to sit in a class for 4 to 6hrs a day. It was insane! The worst is that other parents say it's a brilliant school because of how much advanced their kids are. You unfortunately cannot even reason with people like this because it's what they want for their kids and not allowing children to be children. I'm really hoping we can get our kids onto our homestead soon. Thanks for the great content 🌻

Kudos to you for leading an unconventional life, being honest and courageous enough to share with all of us, and for being an outspoken and honest leader! I homeschooled both of my daughters. One until high school ( when she chose to go to school) and the other mostly in high school ( when she chose to pull herself out of school). We employed lots of unschooling strategies ( mostly out of the necessity of having two parents struggling to make a living AND care for the education of those two daughters), though we were not courageous enough to totally unschool ( though that method worked the best and both grown daughters remember that part the most fondly). Learning is not predicated on following a lot of rigid methods. In fact, the public and private schools don’t actually have more achievement to show with all their students, supposed expertise and money. Your credentials indicate you know what you are talking about! I’m now in my 60’s, retired, helping now with a grandchild and both of my daughters are teachers making a living in incredibly difficult circumstances. I’m so proud of their resilience, ingenuity and willingness to work really hard and yet maintain their hopeful and cheerful demeanors. Based on what I see of what you share about your life, I imagine your kids will grow up to be the same. All I can say is keep on doing what you do!

All 4 of my children have been homeschooled. My oldest is now 25 and she went to public school from k-3. I pulled her out and our journey began. Now my issue is this… I have schooled them through Abeka. I do not agree with the amount of work given. My 19 year has one semester left and my 15 year old still has years to go. My 15 year old is autistic and handles the work with no problems academically BUT he is always fighting through anxiety and that is what I do not want to see! This boy is wonderful and I don’t want his spirit squashed. Where would I begin with unschooling here?
@raisingwildflowers
@raisingwildflowers Месяц назад
One of my teens is autistic :) Autistic kids THRIVE with unschooling. I would start by asking him what he wants to learn about, and try to find resources for him on that topic (that may be curriculum, books, movies, classes, etc). Because you have been using Abeka for so long, and a lot of autistic kids like structure, I would gradually phase out Abeka - maybe keep english and math for a semester while you supplement all other areas. My kids do like using curriculum as a tool for learning, but we use it loosely and create our own schedules and only use what we want out of it. Having your son make his own daily schedule would also be helpful. The most important thing is getting him involved and working towards him designing the education he wants - with your help and guidance. I am working on a video sharing my 16 year old's educational plan for this year - with all her interests and curriculum choices, so that may be helpful! It will be on my new channel - Raising Wildflowers Homeschool

My 6 year old has picked up SO much just by playing with his legos and trucks (keeping his hands busy while listening is great for boys especially- God didn't make them to sit still all day!) in the same room as the older children! We homestead and the saying we have around here is "everyday is a school day!" We even us adults should be learning something daily. Learning comes naturally when you provide a healthy environment for your children. Unschooling isn't un-learning like the word seems to mean - it's a rejection of the current Rockefeller public school programing. Its letting learning happen organically after you as the parent assess the soil and fertilize it depending on the needs of the child to grow :) It allows us to live as a family and learn as a family!

I think there are a lot of misconceptions about "unschooling," just like there are a lot of misconceptions about "gentle parenting." Education/learning isn't a "one size fits all" - some children aren't going to thrive in the unstructured environment provided by unschooling, just like some children aren't going to flourish within a "gentle parenting" framework. We need to observe what works best for each of our children and sometimes a different approach is necessary even within the same family. My daughter does very well within a gentle framework, my son? Not so much. 😂

I homeschool my kids. We don’t unschool, but if I had to choose between unschooling and public school I would choose unschooling! It’s all about how the parents go about providing good recourses and letting their kids experience the outdoors and socialization. That goes for parents who do public school but in my opinion is much harder to accomplish because of all the time they spend away from home! People who readily react to those TikTok’s just don’t do enough research and are easily influenced which is not a good way to make conclusions

Liked your video. Lots of parents have to work and don't have the option to stay home with their kids and most have to use the public school system due to that reason. I'm a former teacher at elementary schools but only taught for 6 years due to several reasons but it wasn't because I don't love teaching or education. I haven't done much research on "unschooling" but based on this video I'm wondering if that title of "unschooling" and the short definition of "letting kids decide what they want to learn" is misleading to some extent. I like your extended explanation, and it seems to me that instead of calling it "unschooling" maybe a better "title" could be something along these lines "parent guided education", "education by parent example/encouragement", or "using children's curiosity to encourage learning". While a teacher, I preferred to use a lot of different teaching methods to help students learn. I tried to incorporate auditory, tactile, visual methods and a combination of all of these since different kids learn differently. I didn't like to totally rely on the textbooks and worksheets even though I did use them to some extent. Most parents, who want to help educate their kids, probably do this anyway even if they don't realize it or not. I always used cooking to help educate my kids, along with projects around the house, walking in the woods to identify plants, trees, birds and animals. When traveling we tried to incorporate museums, historical places, and discussed various topics while on the road trips. We discussed and explored survival skills when camping in the forest and gardening with my parents on their farm. My daughter helped my mom, and I preserve foods from the garden. I did art projects throughout the year with my kids along with reading to them growing up. We made several visits to the library. Our kids had chores they were responsible for in our home. These are all forms of education. We discussed various age-appropriate topics with our kids and grandson to help them navigate finances, owning/maintaining a car, being a careful driver, understanding government, etc. I encouraged them to take diverse classes in high school and college as well as learning various skills such as carpentry, car mechanics, keyboarding, graphic design, dance, drama, sports, writing poetry and short stories, etc.

It’s extremely similar in the uk sadly… but it’s coz of the ratio adults to kids I believe to a degree. This issue is the here homeschooling is know for kids not getting educated to take tests for jobs for the future. Sadly…. That’s all the government looks at is what people can do add to the economy when over 18. And I disagree I think it’s too much to expect that.

Unschooling is not acceptable in most European Countries. Is your 18 old daughter accepted in a College as an unschooled kid? In Europe it is impossible. Also in many European public schools there are Special Education teachers or tutors so that neurodivergent kids can be helped. I suppose this is not happening in the U.S.

The US has special education and a LOT of it for all kinds of kids for different reasons. The public schools here though… 😢 has been getting worse. I WISH I was homeschooled. If I was given a curriculum after about 8 years old I feel like I probably could have taught myself more than the public school system did and remember more. I think our school system is very flawed and the amount of stuff kids learn from other kids (not good things) is astonishing. I was going to college to become a preschool teacher and I quit pretty early on and now that I have my own children, I refuse to send them to any public school. Not. Gonna. Happen. On. My. Watch.

My son was homeschooled and unschooled and was accepted into college with no problem. He actually tested out of several classes that he would have to pay for at the college level and earned credits without even having to go to those classes. The College administration said that they loved getting homeschoolers because they were found to be more self-directed and held themselves accountable for their own success.

Hm, wonder the place in which you got the degrees. Wonder why you place value on those degrees to emphasize your credentials. Higher education, even in online form, models similarly to K-12 schools. Do schools need to improve? Yes. Do schools, and students who attend them bc they do not have the option to un or home school, benefit from this kind of parent divestment? Nope.

I agree with what you are saying. I just retired from the public school classroom at the end of May after 22 years. I was an Art and STEAM teacher and I had a lot of autonomy in my classroom. My students got to explore and play and they loved it. Now, I am reaching out to the home schooling community and working with them. The students in public education are struggling in many ways. One of the reasons I like to teach STEAM is because so many of the younger children are not developing fine motor skills they way they should be, due to so much time spent on technology. Some of them never play outside, except at recess. Critical thinking skills and problem solving skills are not being developed the way they should be. I could go on and on. Thank you for addressing this on your channel.

Thank you for this video. I graduated in 1981 with a degree in elementary education. One of my professors was very forward thinking and taught us about unschooling. I immediately identified with the concepts and knew that’s what I wanted for my own future family. I did teach in a public school until my two children were born, but was able to provide that education at home for them both. There were some lean years living solely off my husband’s salary, but we were part of many groups (homeschool, 4-H, community, etc.) and the children thrived. The older went on, with scholarships, to receive a PhD from Virginia Tech and now is teaching at another university (and whose children are old enough that they are homeschooled now). The younger is a manager of a large chain grocery store and has a young and inquisitive child not much older than Falcon. I believe there is a bright future for homeschooled children and encourage parents to pursue this if they feel the desire to make this decision and commitment.

Can I ever related to what you're saying. On my 1st day of school, I returned home as soon as we were let out for recess. I always had difficulty to read. That was in the late 1950's. So, on the 4th grade we had to get up and read a paragraph aloud in front of everyone. So, I figured out was paragraph I was going to read in a couple of days and learned it by hearth. Unfortunately, the girl that was in front of me was sick so now I had to read a paragraph she was supposed to read. I read so badly that the teacher stopped me before I was finished and started to put me down in front of everyone. Saying things like "What are you doing in the 4th grade, you read worse than a 1st grader". At recess I want to the bathroom and cried my hearth out. I never received help to improve my reading. Now that I'm in my 70s I simply refuse to read out loud. I'm still very slow but I love reading. I always have a book on the go. I read at least an hour every day. Any way that's 2 of the reasons why I think school and BS. Another reason is the fact that there is no financial teaching at all. I could have use them, the example at home was not good at all. I'm French Canadian. I learn English at school, but it was pretty useless when I moved to the Toronto. Your children are very fortunate. Good on you.

You are misrepresenting information. Learning skills such as reading and writing are very important to learn before the age of 8 for cognitive development. The fact that you have the education that you have and then go on to you say what you say in this video is quite alarming. "Unschooling" is very different from homeschooling, especially homeschooling through state curriculum. Not just made up "education, " which is what is being pushed by the "unschooling" parents showcased in the videos from the creators you displayed at the beginning of your video. Hence, the creators covering this concerning situation. The creators have nothing against legitimate homeschooling. Furthermore, early cognitive development is still incredibly important, and hasn't changed just because technology is advancing. I'm just confused why someone with your background would push the "unschooling" learning method which is so easily reckless and unhelpful. Considering that most parents won't have the knowledge that you have from your degree(s) to understand what stages happen, when, and why. Frankly, I'm questioning if you are just trying to sell a product since you think such a method is perfectly fine?!

We sent our two older kids to public school because homeschooling was not a "thing" in our rural area. We had a 14 year gap, then had our third child and we chose to homeschool her. She's now 15 and thriving! She loves to learn. We live on a homestead with poultry and gardens and we spend a lot of time in nature. We started out using an online curriculum (mostly) and this has morphed into a more varied way of learning over the years. We use literature, nature, hands-on activities, real world experience, etc., as well as pen-and-paper type learning....but honestly, over the years we've opted for more hands-on and less pen-and-paper. My daughter and I decide together what we're focusing on each year and choose activities, books, etc. that suits what she wants to learn. We have used VERY few "text books" and many works of literature instead. Homeschool doesn't have to adhere to a "box" curriculum and it doesn't have to involve sitting at a table grueling through worksheets and pages of repetitive paperwork. In my opinion, it can be anything that suits your family. so long as the child is learning.

Thank you for making and sharing this video 💯🙌 Knowledge is power 💪👏💯 The one major thing that I noticed between my homeschooled children and children I know that go to public school is the big difference between their mental health. My children don't have the issues that MOST public schoolers have. They also eat way healthier. That alone has a lot to do with mental health.

The heart of unschooling is interest lead. I have talked with parents that are unschooling and have never read the book. In the book it talks about giving the kids freedom when possible. It uses when possible several times. It's just like any other non-traditional form of education such as Montessori and Waldorf. It is still the parent's responsibility to make sure children are meeting certain goals. Boredom is the key to making non-traditional schooling work. It worked great in the '70s and the '80s and possibly even part of the '90s because there wasn't the technology children have today. It's too easy for children to not want to go search out something new. They have video games and friends and everything else at their fingertips. There was a recent post in one of our homeschool groups where the mom tested her child who was 17 and was supposed to graduate this year. The test scores showed the child was still on a third grade level. She wanted to know what to do. This child was unschooled. She assumed her child would miraculously learn algebra and write essays because everyone says, "Oh, they will naturally learn everything they need."This is not the case. It's just like if you had a Montessori room or Waldorf curriculum and you did not constantly change out your curriculum or introduce new work. Then you would not be doing your job. I think RU-vidrs and Instagram influencers have people thinking that unschooling is a hands-off way of learning. That's just not the case. It is still parents job to make sure children are meeting their educational goals. Math and English are non-compromised subjects for me. It doesn't matter which curriculum you choose. Whether it's a spectrum workbook or an internet-based curriculum, but those two subjects should always have a curriculum. It can be a completely parent-made curriculum, but there needs to be defined skills that a child works on. The rest of the subjects absolutely can be Interest lead. I think an area where a lot of unschoolers are failing is parents are not checking in to see where their children are at academically .It's okay if they progress slower but a parent need to make sure they are progressing. I have no problem with unschooling as a teaching philosophy. My concern is that too many people are getting their information from the internet instead of reading the book or speaking with successful unschoolers to make sure that their children are successful.

I totally respect your opinion on schooling, and appreciate that it’s from an educated and researched point of view/experience. I’ve seen some of those unschool reaction videos and also noticed they are coming from people that don’t have kids. I’ve also seen videos from teachers in public and private schools and their reasons behind leaving the system. A lot of them have even said they would rather homeschool their own kids than put them into the same system they worked in. I must say I don’t quite understand “unschooling” but I do find it interesting. I have homeschooled my kids for the past 5 years and plan to do so through high school. I am pretty rigid with what they learn and have requirements of them, but we also study subjects that they’ve been interested in such as mythology or a study on a certain animal. There is a lot of hands on play learning as well. At the end of the day what’s most important is that we are actively involved in our kid’s lives and their education, no matter what “school” may look like.

As a mom that homeschools, while I understand where you're coming from, I think it's an important note that you were/are a professional when to comes to education and you have experience. A lot of the people that we see on social media advertising this form of education clearly shouldn't be because they don't know the first thing about child development. The public school system is flawed, but I think the majority of parents just aren't knowledgeable enough on child psychology or development to practice this because it could be detrimental for the child. It would take a lot of education on the part of the parent themself to practice this in a way that won't cause their kids to suffer for it in the future. For the majority public school with a teacher that has an actual teaching degree is the safer option.
