Living with intention to create the life I want for my family. Being debt free, living frugally, always learning, experiencing as much of life as possible, listening to nature and learning from the world around us. I am raising wildflowers - children who are free to be whoever they are and grow however they grow. I do not keep a tidy flowerbed of pruned roses. My flowers grow outside the flower beds, in the fields, forests, and even along the roadside. Join me if you are a wildflower too. And if you are a rose, come along and follow our journey - maybe you want to venture outside the flowerbed.

Thanks for your support,
Katie

Use clean Toilet paper to sprout seeds indoors inside open but folded over Ziploc bag...acts like terarium...tp dissolves instead of tearing off roots. Deer hate smell of rotten eggs so put your half eggshells around garden...you can't smell them but deer can and stay away. Use pliars to dig up thistle plants. Plant potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes) in those mound rows...but where you want them to be forever because they will spread and take over areas...ps...must have 2 different sunchoke types to grow tubers...can't self pollinate like types.

Those thorny weeds are thistle, parts are edible but like you, I hate them. You need a good pair of gloves for dealing with these weeds.

I watched a video years ago of a Native American gardener planting her 3 sisters garden patch. She said the most important thing is that you plant the corn first at least 3-4 weeks ahead of the beans which go in next and let them start vining before you plant the squash. If you don’t let the corn and then the beans start growing, the squash will smother the others out. The corn is the foundation or support structure of the 3 sisters and it needs time to get growing before it can provide the support for the beans. If the corn hasn’t grown sufficiently the beans will strangle the corn and kill it. The squash is there to smother the weeds and help retain the moisture around the base of the corn and beans. All three plants compliment each other and add or subtract different nutrients from the soil. Good luck with your brand new garden. I would suggest making a barrel of homemade liquid fertilizer to feed your garden. Start with some manure (put it in a fabric bag or old piece of cloth tied shut so you can remove it later) and weeds in a 5 gallon bucket, about 1/3-1/2 full. Fill the bucket with water and put a lid loosely on it. Let it steep (preferably in a sunny location) for a few weeks, stir it a couple times a week. Don’t place it near your living space because it will draw flies in and it will smell as it steeps. You can add kitchen scraps or more weeds as the contents breakdown. As your brew starts to get darker and stronger, you can start diluting some of it and using it to feed your plants. When you remove some of the liquid from the bucket immediately replace it with more water so that you will have a constant supply. Just remove approximately 1 cup of liquid and mix it with 1 gallon of water to fertilize your plants.

If you have chip drop in your area they will deliver it to your property . It’s a easy way to suppress weed and as it breaks down it will enrich the soil

This garden looks great - what happened to the other garden that you planted with potatoes? Did the deer get it? I love your attitude - it's not a failure if you learn important lessons from it!

Here in AZ we plant on the mounds and the trenches are used to irrigate the garden like they do in the farm fields. When you prepare your garden next year pull out as many of the loose weeds and grass as you can to help eliminate as many as possible for future gardens. You can toss them in your compost pile also and the heat kills any seeds too. Save all your manure from your stock and let it age to put directly into your soil and you can do that either this fall when you put your garden to bed for the winter or next spring. You can also make manure tea to use right away also, place some horse biscuits 😂 in a large bucket and fill it up with water and let it steep for a few days then water directly at the bottom of the plant with it and you can keep adding water for a bit until all the nutrients are used up and then start over. Congratulations on your first zucchini!! I love the excitement I am that way and I have been gardening for about 40 years now.

You are right! It doesn't have to be beautiful, weedless, and perfect. It just has to produce. Gardening is all about willpower, perseverance, and experience. You get better at it every year. Learning to preserve your bounty is next.

I beat the water dilemma by growing in small pots inside my greenhouse. All the pots sit in a tray, so if some water splashes out, it's not lost and will be sucked up by other pots. I also grow only medicinal plants, because I'm a carnivore and I don't eat plants. I eat animals that eat plants . . . and they eat mostly grass at that. Pick your battles. You can't grow everything. If you live in a farming community, like I do, grow just one thing, maybe two and trade with neighbors for variety. I grow mostly cayenne pepper & mint. I also have fruit trees, but unfortunately, the best time to plant fruit trees is 15 years ago.

Your plants are looking good! Next year you will be able to use the horse and chicken manure after it composts. You could till, but I stopped tilling and laid dowm cardboard to kill the weeds, then putting the soil.on top. Vegetables will definitely still grow with weeds, though.

In other words you're not off grid, or going to try to be. You handwash your clothes until you can get to the laundry mat. What's the point? Some are trying to go off grid for good. This content is not relevant. You're living like someone down on their luck, and trying to get back to normal. Again; whats the point? You training yourselves?

What a great video! Because you are a very young person, I am sharing this with my grandson, nieces and nephews, who will likely listen to you a bit more intensely than they will to my 69 year old self. LOL! I'm hoping to get them interested in canning and other forms of food preservation, too. I made a sweet potato pie for our family Thanksgiving dinner from potatoes that I grew in 16-gallon storage containers! Another benefit of the garden are the psychological benefits. I have a sign in a memorial garden I made for my late son that says, "In my garden, the answers come". The sign on the 'farm' gate (that's what I call my vegetable garden and apiary) says "garden: a place to lose yourself when you need to find yourself". I even 'eat the weeds'! I forage Lamb's Quarters, Poke Weed (both of which I have canned), dandelions, berries, and even things like plantain and mullein for medicinal uses. Two years ago, I planted a miniature orchard of dwarf apple trees and a Kieffer pear, all of which are actually producing fruit. I live in a subdivision on about a third of an acre, so it doesn't take much. I'd have chickens if the city ordinances allowed it. Thanks for posting this!

I mean can it be worse than the summer of love in 2020?! Look at Seattle. They are still battling the chaos. I guess the new norm in America will be making murals, statues and martyrs out of felons. It’s starting to be a viral trend to add fear to society.

It wouldnt be possible to buy land that cheaply , even much smaller plots in most developed and even some developing countries. You are able to live on such a low budget because your costs are so low . I know Americans think it is high but it really isnt compared to other parts of the world. Of course prices vary a lot within the US. But that is good as it presents many possibilities. How developed is your area in terms of amenities? I mean your town
@raisingwildflowers
@raisingwildflowers День назад
We are 5 mins from a smaller town with basically everything - grocery stores, gas, post office, feed store, lumber and building supplies, farmers market, doctors offices, contractors, etc. It’s a touristy town so lots of restaurants and shopping too 😆 Everything is small-business owned. We are 45 mins from a big city with hospitals and corporate stores (Home Depot, Walmart, etc).

Nice video. 😊 A little building tip. Only notch your post a half of inch. It’s not anymore affective. The inch and a half really weakens the a post. When it’s not necessary for support. When you have it fastened good to the post. Try useing a bolt. I do realize skews are cheaper. If you do that notch lower in the post. That’s where it will break. 😥 Again very nice video…..

You are definitely keeping your expenses very low. But I wonder how your insurance is only 28 dollars. Is that for all of you? How much coverage could you get for that amount? What happens if one of you suddenly needs hospitalisation or ongoing treatment for a condition? In life these things happen.

Hi Katie. First of all, the budget book you recommended help me pay off my vehicle 4 months early and shows a better picture where our money goes. I found this video very interesting and informative for the mentioned subject even though my family is pretty well settled in our house in Florida. If some circumstances arise that make living there, then we may move back to NY. This regarding health issues or God forbid something happens to one of us. Thank you.
