What do you want your students to know and be able to do by the end of your course? How do you identify learning goals? Do the activities you assign actually help students meet those goals? Professor Erica Halverson in the School of Education talks about curricular redesign and how the "backward design" framework can help you think through these issues.

Very helpful. As a newly accredited teacher, the Backwards design framework not only has developed the way I approach lesson planning but unit programming. I look forward to learning more about the implementation of the backward design and modifying teaching strategies to better accommodate the needs of my students :)

"backward design" turns out to be "top-down design" which is the normal, ie forward, way of designing to meet objectives in all other spheres of activity. KIAT design (ie "knickers in a twist") would be a more descriptive term for her explanation.

Where does compliance to standards fall within the three stages? Is it the third stage? I think the first stage should consist of determining what standards should apply to student learning. The second stage should be thinking about how to acessed student learning in compliance with the standards. The third stage should entail doing some type of activities that fulfills compliance to the standards or goals set. You are very knowledgeable about this subject. I am relatively new to it, and I need to familiarize myself to procedural steps of backward design for I student teach. I would very much appreciate your help in reccommending to me some resources to study for Backward Design Instruction.

I love this question, Ray. With all due respect, from my perspective as an instructional designer, it is the rigid standards themselves that devalue the educational system. Or in other words, I am not sure that I believe that teaching toward taking a standardized, multiple-choice test encourages real significant learning.

Ray, so, could the compliance standards be the learning goals/objectives that you start with? Or could the standards create or define the goals/objectives? Then the formative assessment could actually be how will we quantify if learning took place? The activities could be developed that align with the goals and the form of assessment.
