I loved the ending - such a good perspective for the reason we are teaching/coaching in the first place. Beautiful, thank you! :) Llyane Stanfield

I am happy to know that the textbook is only a point of reference when learning about a particular thing. It can serves as a guide toward the long term goal one is attempting to transfer. I am big in small group collaboration, it very important in a sharing of knowledge.

I specifically like the section that focused on backward planning. It is vital for teachers to have the end goal in mind when planning lessons. If we have the end goal in mind, it makes it easier to set short term goals and achieve those goals efficiently. We also have to make sure those goals aren't general, but composed of both material that is mandated and material that will benefit students as they continue their education.

When I was chair/member of college mathematics textbook committees, I learned so much of what you share about the math textbooks... Thanks for this presentation!

The idea of using the student's own schema and their own interests to make concepts accessible to them is brilliant. If we give them a reason to be interested in the lessons, I believe that they will be more engaged.

I wish this had been a presentation given to a few of my high school teachers back in the day. There was so much "learn it because it's on the test". Well, surprise, surprise, that's not the best motivator.

This method of finding a way to engage all students in the lesson was fantastic to watch! I found myself nodding to his explanations because the harsh reality is that (some) teachers don't try their best to make sure the understanding of the context is actually happening. This model of the "fair" question is a great tool to serve as an example for future and current educators. As he mentioned, the textbook is not the course and yet there are so many classrooms that do not stray away from them.This is great way to begin backing away and not being so dependent and actually making sure that the learning is happening and not just memorizing.

Jonathan T 10 minutes ago I think it is when Apple began hosting school textbooks in their iBook(?) store. So digital distribution of textbooks were possible. I might be wrong but it seems to fit the context.

Dear Avenues The World School, I do appreciate your contribution with this wonderfulGRant Wiggins presentatio, The other day a fellow Math teacher asked me to give some translation to the Math segment, I did it and now I am planning to upload it. I have referenced it acknowledging such contribution to education. I hope you don't mind. Thank you!

By engaging students into higher level of critical thinking through design by question-based cirricula. It helps the student better grasp material being presented instead of straight from textbooks. Prompting actual, engaged learning and not just a superficial approach to education. -Amanda Dickenson

I am a former large animal veterinarian that failed at retirement and started teaching 2 years ago. This UbD came at exactly the perfect time. I kept trying to discover how to apply the successful teaching processes I utilized each day with dairy farmers to my classroom students. Thanks Dr. Wiggins. I have no idea why, but as I was listening to you the urge to drink a beer was ever present within my thoughts.

11:00 Very good question that was answered very poorly. The bottom line is, you will never be able to teach differential equations by discussing ANY topic. If this approach were applied to all of math, math performance would go down.
@jimhutchinson3738
@jimhutchinson3738 4 года назад
Of course you can. The point he is making is that students learn best through application. Given the application of ranking fairly students learn about and apply mean, etc. If you want to learn diff eq then select an application and work backwards to the tool and how to apply it. Or are you saying that differential equations have no applications (topics) to discuss? Obviously that's not true. Population growth might be a topic of concern that students could discuss and later mode.
@ketzbook
@ketzbook 4 года назад
@@jimhutchinson3738 Teachers have taught the applications of math for centuries. Wiggins is not talking about application but discussion based learning, which is simply not a very effective way to learn the vast majority of math topics. Whatever you gain in engagement of students you lose in depth of learning. Besides, there are a number of students who would actually engage less with the discussion than with problem-solving. Sure, it's nice to mix stuff up from time to time, but if a math teacher were to make every topic into a discussion, math learning would sharply decline.
@tradurrrr
@tradurrrr 3 года назад
@Ketzbook You are absolutely right. Wiggins evades the question and tries to cleverly put it back on the teacher. The reality is that much content and curriculum simply does not lend itself to this form of instruction. UbD is awesome, but it's simply not always accessible or enactable.

I am a physics teacher and I beg to differ... you can frame all lessons using the UbD design. If physics, which relies heavily on high levels of math proficiency could be taught conceptually, so can any topic in math. However, it would extremely time consuming to rewrite your entire curriculum.

If they paid teachers more and didnt punish them for how their students are performing when the structures to make them succeed are not there, then mayyyybe they would be able to feel free enough to make their lessons super interesting.

You cannot teach history backwards. That is how you end up with a poor understanding of history that focuses on making value judgements and not analysis of events. You can demonstrate how events that occurred in the past have direct implications for events in the present, but you cannot achieve a valid understanding of a historical event by beginning with the conclusion. The Lost Cause theory that developed in the South after the Civil War is an excellent example of the results of beginning with the conclusion of a historical event.

This was my thought also. I teach a first level history of fashion and it is important to teach the chronology so that students are left with a working knowledge of how the history unfolded and how ideas were built on one another based on events. That is because they may find themselves in work situations where they have to quickly apply the ideas from those silhouettes, etc.. In addition to the chronology, they also learn topics like themes in fashion and they see how those evolve, and they also learn a lot about societies and human nature as its all connected and it all develops together.

Yes but I think what he’s saying is more abstract rather than concrete facts of history. Of course we couldn’t teach the FACTS or history backwards, but beginning with the end in mind, “I want my students to know WHY this thing in history happened” is the end goal but we begin with it when planning a curriculum

I wish the educator would be more thoughtful in the examples he uses. Having American students design a government for Iraq is extremely problematic, endorsing a sense of imperialist entitlement. Yes, I know they were just examples but they shouldn't be normalized in a demonstration like this.
@samuellumsey2998
@samuellumsey2998 Год назад
Apart of knowing right is knowing wrong. The activity is still useful even as it is problematic. I would only facilitate this effective learning activity by prefacing that it risks exposure to imperialist entitlement. I would have to repeat this point often to ensure they grasp the point. You could too!

I am having the displeasure of learning about this trite for the next fourteen weeks to fulfill my M.Ed. After wasting tens of thousands of dollars on a useless master degree in education, I have come to the conclusion that public schools are hindering the development of young Americans. Parents, take your children out of these prerequisites to prison, and home school your children with qualified tutors. Public school teachers are only concerned with maintaining their employment, upward mobility, and higher wages; in other words, student learning is the least of their concern.

Did it occur to you that employment, upward mobility, and higher wages are often tied to educator effectiveness? As if most parents can afford to pay a slew of tutors (who are likely less qualified than teachers) to educate their children for them. Ridiculous.

+Sarah Acre there is no meritocracy in public schools. Public school teachers earn more wages by earning more college credits, public school teachers do not earn more wages based on their performance as teachers.
