From what i have read violas can play pretty much anything that a cello can? Their clefs are the same. If I’m not mistaken.

Pony Aviles actually we don’t use the same clef as the Cello. Us violists use the *Alto Clef* while Cellos use the *Bass Clef* We are able to play what the Cellos can because our strings are the same. Us violists have an A- String, D-String, G- String, and C-String. And the Cellos also have an A- String, D- String, G- String, and C- String

I'm so astonished at your ability to project, even when shifted into higher positions on the G/D strings. I struggle to get my viola to project with the same clarity and consistency of tone in that range. Beautiful performance.

Lionel Tertis played the concerto for Elgar and Elgar gave his okay and blessing after hearing Tertis' performance..that's how long it's been waiting for violists

Cellists may not like the idea of an adaptation, but it looked great on the viola. After watching this video I already got the part to study. The truth is that I got a little tired of Bartók and Walton and I'm playing other pieces. The interpretation is beautiful, congratulations

One thing I appreciated greatly about this performance is that the sudden downward octave shift just before rehearsal 1 in the Tertis transcription was left out. That phrase has to rise, and rise, and rise, until the viola section comes in. And Mme Adachi did this beautifully.

エルガーの命日に視聴させていただきました。通常のチェロ版も素晴らしいですがヴィオラ版もヴィオラならではの表現力でむしろヴィオラ協奏曲にしても良いくらいの作品です。

Wow... I don’t even know where to begin with how amazing this is. For one thing, this transcription is seriously underperformed, but you do it great justice with that beautiful tone and gorgeous vibrato! I just started learning this, and this is instantly my reference video for any questions I have about bowing or tone quality

and, on top of her first-class technique and incredible interpretation, she gets MAJOR, MAJOR points for playing it from memory (always a pet issue of mine). I wish I had known about this transcription when I was playing the viola. Mari Adachi is an example of the positive potential that ALL violists should follow! :)

When I searched up Elgar cello concerto solo viola I didn't think I would find any performances, much less one of this quality. I also was worried that some of the expercivness and emotion might be lost in the change of instruments but all my doubts were dispelled when i heard that high E at 3:08. This is probably my favourite concerto and I am so glad that I was able to find this performance. Thank you so much for this performance Mari.

Oh, thank you so much for your comment! I was also worried that it might have been not able to express the world of this beautiful concerto with the viola. But I tried not to imitate the sound of cellos but to find my own way with my viola sound. I think by performing with the viola, it sounds more nostalgic and intimate... I'm very happy that you enjoy this video!

This is a really cool transcribed version of the cello concerto but personally I feel like if you transcribe a cello concerto for a viola it should just be one octave above the cello so instead of switching back and fourth from different October you could make it ten times easier and it would sound (again just my opinion) better.

Very beautiful. Phenomenal challenge considering the expectation of the sonority of a priceless cello! Really captured the concerto. Even the 3rd movement - I think the most challenging to interpret - is beautiful. I’d love to know what Elgar was saying there. Whatever it was he meant, you repeated it!

Definitely agreed: the cello has a deeper sound, while the viola is AMAZING, it doesn't have that same color as the cello (I'm a cellist myself)

I have to be honest. The deeper the tone is, the more tragic. I feel this transcription has lost that factor that makes the piece so beautiful. Though great job

Lovely performance! As an amateur violist, I have been working on this piece. Gives me a great workout in 10 positions... I have the version arranged by Tertis (which I 'edited' here and there, on consultation with the original cello part). You seem to be using a different arrangement. Is yours available?
